Chapter 5 - THE HOSTAGE IN THE STORAGE UNIT: THE OTHER LIFE OF MARK VANCE

The woman huddled against the cold metal wall of the storage unit blinked rapidly, tears carving clean paths down her soot-stained cheeks as Sergeant Miller rushed forward with a pair of tactical shears to snip the zip-ties binding her wrists.
“Are you alright, miss? What is your name?” Sergeant Miller asked gently, helping the trembling woman to her feet.
“I’m... I’m Elena,” she gasped, rubbing her raw, red wrists where the plastic ties had dug into her skin. “Elena Rossi. I’m a flight attendant based out of Miami.”
I stood frozen near the entrance of the unit, my hands trembling as my eyes swept over the glittering display of designer jewelry, the fake passports, and the stacks of corporate embezzlement ledgers.
“Elena,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “What are you doing here? Who put you in this unit?”
Elena looked up, her terrified brown eyes locking onto mine, sizing up my trench coat and my pale, devastated face. “You... who are you? Are you Mark’s wife?”
“Yes,” I answered, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. “I’m Clara Vance. Where is my husband?”
Elena let out a harsh, bitter laugh that ended in a sob. “Your husband? You mean the monster who kidnapped me three days ago from my apartment in Miami because I threatened to expose his massive corporate fraud and his double life?!”
The ground beneath my feet seemed to vanish.
Kidnapped from Miami.
Corporate fraud.
His double life.
“Slow down,” Sergeant Miller commanded firmly, leading Elena toward a folding chair and handing her an unopened bottle of water from a police kit. “Take a breath, Elena. Start from the beginning. Who is Mark Vance to you?”
Elena took a shaky sip of water, clutching the plastic bottle with both hands. “Mark... Mark and I have been secretly married for two years. We met when he was in Miami on a corporate merger trip. He told me he was unmarried, that he was an international shipping executive, and he moved me into a luxury condo downtown six months ago.”
The room spun.
Secretly married for two years.
That meant Mark had married me while he was already married to someone else—or worse, he had bigamously married her while we were already living together in our suburban home.
“He was leading a double life,” I choked out, my knees trembling so violently I had to grab the edge of a filing cabinet to stay upright. “He told me he had a corporate conference in Dallas today.”
“Dallas?” Elena scoffed bitterly. “There was no conference. Mark has been embezzling millions of dollars from Meridian Tech’s subsidiary accounts through offshore shell companies for over three years. I found his ledger books hidden in our condo last week. I told him I was going to turn him into the federal authorities and file for divorce.”
She looked up at me, her eyes filled with profound, unexpected pity.
“That’s when he lured me down to his private storage locker on Friday night, tied me up, stuffed me in the back of a rental van, and brought me here to silence me. He said he had to liquidate his assets, stash his cash, and arrange for a flight out of the country before the federal audit hit on Monday morning.”
Sergeant Miller’s radio crackled loudly, cutting through the heavy silence of the unit.
“Attention all units! This is dispatch! We have a positive ID on Mark Vance’s vehicle! He’s currently headed west on Interstate 95 toward the private municipal airfield! Suspect is driving a black Audi Q7, license plate 7-XYZ-882! Approach with extreme caution, suspect is believed to be armed!”
Sergeant Miller snapped her radio to her mouth. “All units, intercept! We have a fleeing felony suspect! Roll the cruisers right now!”

As the police officers scrambled toward their vehicles, sirens wailing into the wet afternoon air, I stood frozen in the center of the storage unit, staring at the fake passports, the stolen jewelry, and the ruined wreckage of a seven-year marriage.
Mark hadn't just beaten and abused our five-year-old daughter because she was a nuisance.
