Chapter 13 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Back in Chicago, the rain had finally cleared, leaving the city bathed in the crisp, cold light of an October afternoon.

Lorenzo Capello stood on the balcony of his penthouse office overlooking the sprawling skyline of the Loop.

His left arm was still resting in a supportive sling, but the dull ache in his shoulder had settled into a manageable, rhythmic pulse.

His phone buzzed softly against the wooden railing.

He picked it up and checked the encrypted messaging app.

A single file had been dropped into his secure folder from an anonymous, untraceable node.

It was a comprehensive, unredacted security assessment of every remaining vulnerability across the Capello shipping routes, supply chains, and warehouse facilities.

Along with the assessment was a short, typed text message consisting of three simple sentences.

Your perimeter is secure, Capello.

The leaks are plugged.

Stop leaving your back exposed.

Lorenzo stared at the screen, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth.

He knew she was gone.

He knew there was no tracking her, no finding her, and no way to repay a debt that could never be settled with currency or power.

He turned away from the balcony and walked back into his private office, where his sister Sofia was sitting by the window with a cup of hot tea.

“You’re smiling,” Sofia noted, looking up from her sketchbook with a sharp, perceptive gaze that reminded him painfully of their father.

“I was just thinking about waitresses,” Lorenzo replied smoothly, sliding his phone back into his jacket pocket.

“Waitresses?” Sofia raised an eyebrow skeptically.

“After everything that happened, you’re thinking about restaurant service?”

“Some people are better at protecting empires than the people who own them, Sofia,” Lorenzo said softly, walking over to the heavy oak desk where the family ledgers rested.

“From now on, things are going to change.”

“No more corporate proxies.”

“No more blind trust in old friends.”

“We rebuild the family from the ground up on loyalty, transparency, and absolute vigilance.”

Sofia closed her sketchbook, a look of profound relief and quiet pride washing over her features.

“Good,” she said softly.

“Father would have wanted it that way.”

Lorenzo walked to the window once more, looking down at the bustling streets far below where ordinary people walked without knowing how close their city had come to total corporate subjugation.

He reached instinctively into his breast pocket, his fingers brushing against a small, clean silver pin he had recovered from the floor of the service station the night of the attack.

It was a miniature military insignia—a tiny, stylized compass rose worn by elite recon scouts.

He kept it hidden against his heart, a permanent reminder of the ghost who had walked out of the shadows to save his life.
