Chapter 10 - Dawn Over Chicago

The first gray light of dawn was breaking over the shores of Lake Michigan, cutting through the lingering haze of the overnight storm.

The black Ford Crown Victoria idled quietly at the end of the long private driveway of the Capello estate.

Inside the vehicle, the heater hummed softly, cutting the damp chill of the morning air.

Sofia Capello sat safely in the rear seat, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, her breathing finally stabilized after hours of terror and shock.

Outside the passenger door, Lorenzo Capello stood in the wet grass, his tailored suit ruined by dried blood, mud, and gunpowder residue.

His left arm remained locked against his chest inside a temporary sling made from a black tactical strap.

Chloe sat behind the steering wheel, her hands resting calmly on the leather-wrapped rim.

“The hard drive is wiped and synced to three secure off-site servers,” Chloe said, looking straight ahead through the windshield.

“Every financial transfer between Victor Vance and Aegis Vanguard is currently sitting in the inbox of three federal investigative journalists and two independent anti-corruption prosecutors.”

“Within twelve hours, federal marshals will dismantle their entire Midwest contracting network.”

Lorenzo looked down at her through the lowered window, his slate-gray eyes no longer carrying the arrogant detachment of a ruthless syndicate don.

There was something deeper in his gaze now—an acute, profound awareness of a world he had only partially understood.

“You’re leaving,” he stated, not as a question, but as a certainty.

“My contract here is finished,” Chloe replied evenly.

“The pipeline is exposed, Victor is going to federal prison for the rest of his natural life, and your sister is safe.”

“There is nothing left for me in Chicago.”

Lorenzo reached into his pocket with his good hand, pulling out a heavy velvet box and placing it gently on the edge of the driver’s side window sill.

“What is this?” she asked, not touching it.

“The Patek Philippe watch you salvaged from the microwave,” Lorenzo said softly.

“It’s clean now.”

“No transmitter, no corporate trackers, just an heirloom that belonged to my grandfather.”

“A man who understood that loyalty cannot be bought from a corporate ledger.”

Chloe looked at the velvet box for three long seconds.

Then she shifted the car into drive, her eyes meeting his one last time.

“Keep your back against the wall, Lorenzo,” she said quietly.

“The world is full of people who like to smile while they pour your whiskey.”

She stepped on the accelerator.

The unmarked Crown Victoria glided smoothly down the wet driveway, merging seamlessly into the morning traffic heading south toward the grey horizon of the city.

Lorenzo watched the taillights fade into the mist until they disappeared entirely, his hand resting slowly over the fresh stitches on his shoulder as the sun finally broke through the clouds.CHAPTER 11 — The Council of Wolves

The heavy oak doors of the Capello executive boardroom swung open with a deliberate, intimidating creak.

Five elderly men sat around the dark walnut table, their faces lined with decades of violence, unrecorded debts, and ruthless ambition.

They were the remaining elders of the Chicago Commission.

They had expected Victor Vance to walk through those doors this morning with a signed merger agreement from Aegis Vanguard.

Instead, they looked up to see Lorenzo Capello standing in the center of the room.

His left arm was still bound tightly inside a black tactical sling.

His dark suit was freshly pressed, but a faint, jagged outline of dried blood remained visible beneath the fabric of his collar.

Behind him stood two loyal enforcers holding automatic submachine guns at port arms.

Old Dominic, the senior caporegime of the North Side district, adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses with trembling fingers.

“Where is Victor, Enzo?” Dominic asked, his voice carrying an edge of calculated tension.

“Victor is currently experiencing the cold hospitality of a federal holding cell downtown,” Lorenzo replied, his voice flat, steady, and devoid of emotion.

“Along with every financial ledger, corporate contract, and encrypted communication log linking this table to Aegis Vanguard.”

A collective murmur of shock and sudden, desperate panic swept through the boardroom.

Dominic slammed his palms down against the polished wood.

“You’ve ruined everything, boy!” Dominic roared, his face flushing crimson.

“The Commission voted to accept the corporate buyout because the old ways are dead!”

“We cannot fight a federal black-budget contractor with street muscle and pistols!”

Lorenzo did not raise his voice.

He simply walked forward, pulled out the central chair at the head of the table, and sat down directly across from the terrified elders.

“My father built this syndicate on a code of honor and blood, not corporate servitude,” Lorenzo said, his slate-gray eyes locking onto Dominic with terrifying intensity.

“You sold out our name to men who saw us as disposable subcontractors.”

“You thought you could replace the Capello family with a board of directors sitting in an air-conditioned skyscraper in Virginia.”

Dominic sneered, leaning forward over the table.

“And what do you expect to do now, Enzo?”

“You think you can run the entire underworld with a bullet in your shoulder and half your captains in federal custody?”

Lorenzo slowly pulled a heavy black flash drive from his pocket and placed it gently on the table.

“I don't need to run it alone,” Lorenzo said quietly.

“That drive contains the personal bank routing numbers of every offshore account where you skimmed family funds over the last five years.”

“You have two choices.”

“You either retire to Sicily by midnight with enough cash to live out your miserable lives in peace, or you stay here and let federal prosecutors explain why your grandchildren are facing asset forfeiture.”

The silence in the room became absolute and suffocating.

Dominic stared at the flash drive, the last remnants of his defiance evaporating into the cold morning air.

He looked around the table and saw only averted eyes and trembling hands.

May you like

Without a single word, Dominic stood up, adjusted his coat, and walked out of the boardroom, followed silently by the remaining elders.

The Capello empire belonged to Lorenzo once more, but as he sat alone in the quiet room, he knew the victory had been engineered by a ghost who was already miles away.
