Chapter 11 - The Crucible of Fifth Avenue

The lobby of Duca Tower had transformed into a raging war zone.

Smoke from the basement explosion swirled through the shattered entrance, smelling of burnt wiring and cordite.

Gianni Ferretti had not sent amateurs.

He had deployed a specialized contract unit armed with military-grade automatic weapons and smoke grenades.

Three of Lorenzo’s veteran bodyguards were already down, bleeding out behind the ruined marble pillars.

The remaining two were pinned down near the elevators, returning blind fire into the fog.

Matteo applied a field tourniquet to his father’s thigh using his silk necktie, pulling it tight with his teeth.

Lorenzo groaned in agony, his fingers digging into the carpet.

""Matteo,"" the patriarch whispered, clutching his son’s wrist.

""Leave me.""

""Take the rear tunnel.""

""If you die, the Ferrettis take everything.""

""I'm not leaving you, Father,"" Matteo snapped, his aristocratic arrogance completely replaced by iron fury.

""We move together or we die together.""

Mia leaned around the corner of the reception desk, tracking the attackers’ movements through the haze.

""Four shooters spreading out along the perimeter,"" she said, her tactical voice slicing cleanly through the gunfire.

""Two covering the street exit.""

""Two moving along the western corridor to flank us.""

""Marco slipped down the service stairwell toward the lower garage.""

""He's heading for the armored extraction vehicle.""

Matteo looked at her, his eyes blazing in the dark.

""If Marco reaches that car, he escapes the city before the police mobilize.""

""He won't reach it,"" Mia said.

She looked at Lorenzo’s two surviving guards.

""You two, hold this barrier!"" she commanded with absolute authority.

""Lay down suppressive fire toward the revolving doors every four seconds!""

""Do not let them advance past the central fountain!""

The two veteran soldiers, men who had taken orders from Lorenzo for decades, looked at the five-foot-six woman and nodded without questioning her.

""Matteo, help your father into the security vault behind the desk,"" Mia ordered.

""The door is four-inch reinforced titanium.""

""Lock it from the inside.""

""What about you?"" Matteo demanded, grabbing her wrist.

His grip was tight, his dark eyes filled with desperate terror that had nothing to do with his own safety.

""I'm finishing my job,"" she said softly.

For one fleeting second, her fingers brushed against his cheek, wiping away a smear of black soot.

""Stay behind the steel, Matteo.""

""Let the clumsy girl handle the garbage.""

Before he could protest, Mia broke into a dead sprint through the crossfire.

She didn't move in a straight line.

She zig-zagged between the fractured pillars, using the falling debris and smoke as concealment.

A burst of automatic fire tracked her path, chewing through the drywall inches from her heels.

Mia caught her toe on an upturned piece of jagged marble flooring and stumbled hard.

To the enemy shooter advancing along the corridor, it looked like she had been hit and lost her footing.

The shooter broke cover, stepping into the open with his rifle raised to deliver the killing blow.

It was the mistake Mia had anticipated.

She rolled across the floor with the momentum of her fall, using the ground to absorb the impact on her injured shoulder.

Coming up on one knee, she fired two hollow-point rounds upward through the shooter’s chin.

He collapsed instantly.

Mia seized his tactical rifle from the floor, spun around the corner of the corridor, and sprinted down the concrete stairs into the subterranean garage.

The lower level was flooded with smoke and emergency red strobes.

At the far end of the bay, an armored black SUV was idling, its headlights cutting through the murky air.

Marco Silva was loading two heavy metallic cases into the rear hatch.

""Marco!"" Mia’s voice echoed against the concrete pillars like a crack of thunder.

Marco spun around, raising his custom submachine gun.

He fired a wild burst of fifteen rounds toward her position.

The concrete pillar beside Mia exploded in chips of stone and flying dust.

Mia did not retreat.

She calculated the rate of fire in her head—seven hundred rounds per minute, thirty-round magazine, empty in two seconds.

The moment Marco’s weapon clicked dry on an empty chamber, Mia broke from cover.

She dropped the heavy rifle, which was empty, and closed the distance with terrifying athletic speed.

Marco lunged for his sidearm, but Mia was already inside his guard.

She drove her elbow into his fractured ribs, snapping two bones with an audible crack.

Marco screamed in pain, swinging a vicious backhand that caught Mia across the cheek.

The blow threw her against the hood of the running vehicle, re-opening the wound on her stitched shoulder.

Pain flared white-hot behind her eyes, but she did not fall.

Marco pulled a combat knife from his tactical vest, his face contorted in psychotic rage.

""You ruined everything, you little bitch!"" Marco roared, slashing the blade toward her throat.

""You were supposed to be a nobody!""

Mia leaned back, feeling the wind of the blade pass millimeters from her skin.

She didn't fight back with brute force.

She used his momentum.

As Marco lunged forward with all his weight, Mia deliberately yielded her footing, dropping her hips and sweeping his lead leg with a brutal low kick.

Marco lost his balance, tumbling heavily against the concrete floor.

Before he could recover, Mia drove her combat boot down onto his wrist with bone-crushing force.

The steel blade clattered harmlessly across the oil-stained floor.

Mia drew her ceramic dagger from her thigh sheath and pinned Marco’s hand to the concrete with a single, ruthless strike.

Marco shrieked, pinned like an insect to the floor of the garage.

Mia stood over him, blood dripping from her split lip, her chest heaving with ragged breaths.

She leveled her recovered sidearm directly between his wide, terrified eyes.

May you like

""You said a woman would panic at the first sign of danger, Marco,"" Mia whispered, her voice colder than the river fog.

""Does this look like panic to you?""
