Chapter 8 - Ghosts Along the Hudson

The fog rolling off the Hudson River smelled of stagnant brine, diesel fuel, and rusted iron.

Pier 42 was a sprawling labyrinth of shipping containers stacked four stories high against the gray dawn.

Mia’s battered sedan had been abandoned three blocks away in an industrial park.

They approached on foot, moving through the deep shadows cast by the perimeter chain-link fence.

Mia carried the stolen pistol, while Matteo held a heavy iron wrench he had salvaged from the trunk.

""The administrative office is on the upper level of the crane control tower,"" Matteo whispered, pointing through the mist.

""The master terminal is inside the dispatch room.""

""Marco keeps his private server disconnected from the main city network.""

Mia paused beside a towering stack of blue cargo crates, her sharp eyes scanning the catwalks.

""Two sentries on the upper platform,"" she noted quietly.

""Neither of them are port authority employees.""

""They're wearing tactical boots and carrying short-barrel automatic rifles.""

""Marco’s private vanguard,"" Matteo said, his teeth clenched against the bitter morning wind.

""They used to guard the perimeter at Blackwood Manor.""

""Which means they know how to shoot, but they don't know how to think without orders,"" Mia replied.

She crouched behind a rusted forklift, calculating distances with clinical precision.

As she moved to step over an oily puddle, her boot slipped on a patch of slick grease.

Her shoulder bumped hard against a metal drum, sending a hollow clang through the foggy corridor.

Matteo winced, his heart leaping into his throat.

""I thought you were supposed to be invisible,"" he hissed.

""The floor was improperly graded,"" Mia whispered back without missing a beat.

""It was an engineering failure, not a tactical one.""

Before Matteo could reply, a flashlight beam cut through the mist above them.

""Who’s down there?"" a gruff voice called down from the catwalk.

The metallic rattle of a bolt cycling echoed across the yard.

Mia didn't freeze.

She stepped directly into the open, raising her hands halfway in mock surrender.

""Please don't shoot!"" she cried out, her voice trembling with perfect, theatrical terror.

""I was looking for the night foreman! My car broke down on the access road!""

The guard leaned over the railing, aiming his weapon down at her silhouette.

""Get on your knees, girl! Hands behind your—""

Mia’s right hand moved like a whip.

She drew the suppressed pistol from beneath her coat and fired two rapid shots upward through the iron grating.

The sentry collapsed forward over the railing, tumbling twenty feet into the muddy gravel with a dull thud.

The second guard on the far tower reacted instantly, opening fire on full automatic.

Sparks showered off the metal shipping container above Mia’s head as high-caliber rounds chewed through the corrugated steel.

""Matteo, the breaker panel!"" Mia shouted, diving behind the chassis of the forklift.

Matteo didn't hesitate.

He surged toward the base of the crane tower, using the iron wrench to smash the padlock off the main electrical housing.

He grabbed the master industrial lever with both hands and threw his entire weight downward.

A blinding arc of blue electricity lit up the fog with a deafening pop.

Every floodlight across Pier 42 exploded into darkness.

The automated crane above them ground to a violent halt, its heavy cargo hook swinging like a giant pendulum through the gloom.

The swinging steel block struck the catwalk with catastrophic force, shearing the metal supports away from the tower.

The second sniper screamed as the entire observation platform collapsed into the black waters of the river below.

The splash was swallowed by the roar of the tide.

Silence reclaimed the harbor.

Matteo leaned against the smoking breaker box, his chest heaving, his face streaked with soot and rain.

Mia walked out of the shadows, stepping over the fallen sentry’s body to retrieve his dropped radio.

She looked at Matteo, a faint, genuine smile curving the corner of her lips.

""Not bad for a boy who only looks at spreadsheets.""

Matteo wiped his brow with the back of his hand, his eyes shining in the gray light.

""I told you, Callaway.""

""I know how the harbor works.""

""Now let's go get the drive before the rest of the rats wake up.""
