Chapter 14 - The Sovereign Vow

Two weeks passed before the dust settled over New York City.
The transition of power was swift, silent, and absolute.
The Irish syndicate in Hell’s Kitchen effectively ceased to exist; its leadership had vanished, its assets were liquidated, and its low-level street operations were absorbed into the Russo maritime umbrella.
Arthur Hayes had not been executed.
Instead, on Khloe’s quiet request, Damian had purchased a one-way ticket for the old man to an isolated monastery in northern Vermont.
Arthur would spend the remainder of his life in silent manual labor, gardening vegetables behind stone walls, stripped of every cent, every deck of cards, and any right to ever speak his daughter’s name again.
It was a punishment far more devastating to Arthur than a bullet: he had to live with what he had done.
On a crisp evening in mid-November, the Tribeca executive suite was completely silent.
The floor-to-ceiling glass windows showed the city glittering beneath a canopy of sharp stars, the Hudson River a sheet of hammered obsidian.
Khloe stood at her oak desk outside Damian’s office, typing the final line of an extensive asset reorganization report.
Her split lip had healed into a faint, pale line that added a sharp, dangerous edge to her classic beauty.
The bruising was gone, replaced by the natural golden warmth of her skin.
The double oak doors opened.
Damian stepped out, holding two crystal tumblers of Macallan 18.
He was wearing a bespoke midnight-blue suit, his tie undone, the top two buttons of his shirt open to reveal his throat.
He walked over to her desk and placed one tumbler on her leather blotter.
"You're working late, Miss Hayes," Damian said, leaning against the edge of her desk, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth.
Khloe stopped typing and looked up at him, resting her chin on her clasped hands.
"Someone has to ensure the Don doesn't accidentally violate maritime customs laws, Mister Russo."
"You saved my life, Khloe."
"I was protecting my investment," she replied smoothly, picking up the crystal glass and swirling the amber whiskey.
Damian reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.
He placed it gently onto the blotter beside her keyboard.
Khloe froze.
Her heart gave an erratic, violent thud against her ribs.
"What is that?" she asked, her voice dropping into a breathless whisper.
"Open it."
She reached out with steady fingers and lifted the small lid.
Resting inside on a bed of black velvet was the vintage Patek Philippe watch.
The sapphire crystal had been replaced with flawless diamond-coated glass.
The cream enamel dial had been meticulously restored, every trace of blood removed.
And the broken gold mesh strap had been replaced with a hand-woven band of solid platinum.
Turned over in the case, the polished caseback had been laser-engraved with five small words:
Never again without my permission.
Khloe let out a shaky breath, her eyes suddenly shining with unshed tears.
"You fixed it."
"I don't leave broken things behind," Damian said softly, stepping closer until he was standing directly behind her chair.
His hands settled onto her shoulders, his thumbs gently rubbing the tension from her neck.
"For three years, Khloe, I told myself that you were here because of a debt."
"I told myself that I kept you close because your brain was useful to the family."
"I lied to myself every single day."
Khloe turned her head slightly, her cheek brushing against the back of his warm hand.
"I know," she murmured. "You’re a terrible liar, Damian."
Damian leaned down until his breath stirred the loose tendrils of dark hair at her temple.
"When I opened that iron door in Greenpoint and saw the bomb... when I thought you were already dead... the empire meant nothing to me."
"The money, the ports, the bloodlines—it was all dust."
"I realized that I haven't been building an empire for myself."
"I’ve been building a fortress for you."
Damian reached into his other pocket and pulled out a second box.
This one was larger, made of polished dark walnut.
He flicked it open.
Inside lay an emerald-cut diamond ring, so large and clear it seemed to swallow the ambient light of the Manhattan skyline.
"No more desks outside my door, Khloe," Damian commanded, his voice trembling with an emotion that stripped away every trace of the mafia king.
"No more titles like secretary or analyst."
"Walk into that office as my equal."
"Stand beside me as the Donna of the Russo syndicate."
"Marry me."
Khloe stood up from her chair, turning to face him fully.
She looked into his eyes—the eyes of a monster who had torn down New York to find her, a man who would burn the world to keep her safe.
She didn't hesitate.
She reached out, wrapped her fingers around his silk tie, and pulled him down into a fierce, breathless kiss.
The taste of whiskey, copper, and redemption passed between them like an ancient covenant.
When she finally pulled back, her eyes were burning with brilliant, triumphant fire.
"Only on one condition, Damian," she whispered against his lips.
"Name it."
"I keep the master encryption keys to the second ledger."
May you like
Damian laughed—a rich, genuine sound that echoed through the glass tower—and slid the heavy platinum ring onto her left finger.
"The keys were always yours, my queen."
