Chapter 15 - The New Reign

Six months later, St. Patrick’s Cathedral was locked down under the highest security protocol in its history.
Fifth Avenue was closed to public traffic from Fiftieth to Fifty-First Street by order of the city administration.
Black SUVs with tinted windows lined the curb for four consecutive blocks, flanked by private tactical security teams standing in formation every ten yards.
Inside the vast, gothic cathedral, the light filtering through the towering stained-glass windows painted the stone floor in deep shades of crimson, sapphire, and gold.
Over eight hundred guests filled the polished oak pews.
Every district boss from the Five Families, high-ranking maritime officials, state judges, and European shipping magnates sat in hushed, reverent silence.
At the foot of the high marble altar stood Damian Russo.
He wore a midnight-black tuxedo tailored by Brioni, his cufflinks made from the polished brass casings of the two rounds that had saved Khloe’s life on Great Inagua.
His posture was sovereign, his gaze fixed down the long central aisle.
The organ roared to life, its massive brass pipes sending thunderous, magnificent chords echoing through the stone arches.
The heavy front doors of the cathedral swung open.
Walking down the aisle, unaccompanied by any man, was Khloe Hayes.
Her gown was an architectural masterpiece of ivory satin and French lace, with a cathedral-length train that drifted over the red runner like sea foam.
Her face was framed by an intricate diamond tiara that had belonged to the Sicilian royal line in the nineteenth century—a gift commissioned by Damian from an Italian auction house.
She did not look down.
She did not look at the hundreds of feared criminals and powerful politicians bowing their heads as she passed.
Her dark eyes remained locked onto Damian.
As she reached the altar steps, Damian stepped down to meet her, taking her small gloved hand in his.
The Archbishop of New York began the traditional Latin liturgy, but neither of them heard the ancient words.
They were looking at the scars that were no longer visible, the invisible bonds forged in basements, fire, and open skies.
When the Archbishop presented the gold rings, Damian slid the heavy band onto her finger with absolute deliberate care.
"With this ring, I grant you my name, my empire, and my life," Damian spoke clearly, his baritone resonating through the cathedral.
"Before God and these men, your word is my law."
Khloe took his left hand, sliding the matching gold band onto his finger.
"With this ring, I take the empire, the ledger, and your heart," Khloe answered, a radiant, triumphant smile illuminating her face.
"And God help any man who tries to come between us."
The Archbishop raised his hands.
"By the authority vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife."
"You may kiss the bride."
Damian cupped her jaw with both hands, his thumbs grazing her cheekbones, and kissed her with a passion that commanded the room.
The cathedral erupted into deafening, synchronized applause, eight hundred men and women rising to their feet to honor the new monarchs of the American underworld.
Two hours later, the private reception at the Russo seaside estate in the Hamptons was in full swing.
The estate sat perched on a rocky bluff overlooking the Atlantic, surrounded by reinforced concrete walls and manicured gardens.
Khloe stood on the open-air stone terrace, holding a glass of vintage champagne, watching the ocean waves crash against the rocks below.
The cool sea breeze caught the lace of her veil, lifting it like a white sail.
Footsteps approached from behind.
Damian slipped his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back against his chest, resting his chin against her shoulder.
"Are you happy, Mrs. Russo?" he murmured into her ear.
"More than happy, Damian," she replied, resting her hands over his.
"I’m peaceful."
"For the first time in my life, nobody is chasing me."
"Nobody will ever chase you again," Damian promised, kissing the curve of her neck.
"The perimeter is secure."
"The empire is unified."
"And the ledger is permanently closed."
Khloe turned in his arms, smiling up at him with a glimmer of mischief in her dark eyes.
She reached into her small bridal purse resting on the terrace table and pulled out a small, white envelope sealed with blue wax.
She handed it to him.
Damian raised an eyebrow, taking the envelope.
"What is this? Another forensic audit?"
"Open it," she said softly.
Damian broke the blue wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of paper.
It was not a balance sheet.
It was not a shipping manifest.
It was an ultrasound scan from a private medical clinic in Manhattan, dated three days ago.
At the bottom of the scan, written in the physician's handwriting, was a single sentence:
Healthy twin heartbeats detected.
Damian froze.
The paper trembled in his fingers.
The man who had faced down federal agents, cartel bosses, and explosive charges without flinching suddenly looked completely overwhelmed.
His eyes lifted from the paper to her face, wide with a profound, breathtaking joy.
"Khloe..." he breathed, his voice cracking entirely.
"Twins?"
"A boy and a girl," Khloe said, her eyes shining with tears of pure happiness.
"The next generation of the Russo family."
Damian dropped the paper on the table, pulled her into his arms, and lifted her off her feet, spinning her around on the stone terrace under the starlit sky.
His laughter rang out over the crashing waves, rich and full of life.
He set her down gently, dropping to both knees before her on the stone terrace, pressing his forehead against her satin-covered stomach.
"I swear to you," Damian whispered against her belly, his voice a sacred, unshakeable vow.
"I will build them a world of light."
"No basements."
"No chains."
"Only daylight."
Khloe rested her hands on his dark hair, looking out over the endless ocean.
The nightmare that had begun behind an iron door had finally burned away into the sunrise of an unshakeable dynasty.

The king had his queen.
And the empire was finally whole.
