Chapter 10 - Blood on the Ballroom Floor

The sound of gunfire turned the opulent ballroom into a screaming stampede of terrified billionaires and fleeing diplomats.

Crystal chandeliers swayed violently as stray bullets shattered the ornate gilded mirrors along the walls.

Franco Russo’s hit squad, realizing their master’s grand conspiracy had been publicly broadcast to the world, abandoned all pretense of subtlety.

They unzipped heavy duffel bags hidden beneath the catering tables, pulling out tactical submachine guns and opening fire on Alessandro’s perimeter team.

"Get behind the fountain, Sophie!" Alessandro commanded, drawing twin customized 1911 automatic pistols from his tuxedo jacket.

Sophie dove behind the thick marble rim of the fountain as bullets shredded the exotic palms above her, showering her gown with dirt and torn fronds.

Alessandro leaned out from cover, his twin pistols barking with rhythmic, devastating accuracy.

Each shot he fired dropped a mercenary in the hallway, his combat training operating with chilling perfection amidst the screaming chaos.

"Marco!" Alessandro barked through his throat-mic.

"Where is the extraction team?"

"The south service elevator is compromised, Boss!" Marco yelled back over the sound of automatic fire from the main lobby.

"Russo brought thirty men into the loading dock!"

"We have to fight through the grand gallery to reach the 58th Street exit!"

Sophie reached down to her inner thigh, slipping her hand through the slit of her silk velvet dress.

She drew the lightweight carbon-fiber pistol from its concealed holster, her grip firm and steady.

She refused to be a liability.

She refused to hide in the dirt ever again.

"Alessandro, look out!" Sophie shouted, raising her pistol and firing two shots over his shoulder.

An enforcer attempting to flank them from the catering pantry dropped instantly, his rifle skidding across the broken marble.

Alessandro looked back at her, a fierce grin lighting up his lethal features.

"Remind me never to make you angry, Mademoiselle Dubois," he shouted over the roar of the battle.

"Move to the gallery now!"

They sprinted through the arched glass corridor leading to the hotel's grand gallery, where priceless oil paintings lined the walls.

Suddenly, a figure stepped out from the shadows near the service stairs.

It was Camilla Russo.

Her emerald gown was torn at the hem, her eyes wild with murderous hysteria.

In her trembling hands, she held a small, nickel-plated revolver, pointed straight at Sophie’s face.

"Stop right there, you filthy waitress!" Camilla shrieked, her voice cracking with insane fury.

"You ruined everything!"

"You ruined my father!"

"You stole Alessandro!"

"You were supposed to be rotting in Queens!"

Alessandro immediately stepped between Camilla’s gun and Sophie, his own weapon raised.

"Lower the gun, Camilla," Alessandro said in a low, terrifying voice.

"Walk away while you still have your breath."

"No!" Camilla screamed, tears of rage cutting through her mascara.

"She took everything from me!"

"My father poisoned Henri Dubois, and I was the one who told him to do it!"

"I told him to make sure the French diplomat never spoke again!"

"And now I’m going to put a bullet between her pretty little eyes!"

Before Camilla could pull the trigger, Sophie reacted with blinding speed.

She didn't shoot.

She stepped out from behind Alessandro, kicked the side of Camilla’s wrist with the steel-reinforced toe of her designer heel, and knocked the revolver flying across the polished parquet floor.

Camilla screamed, lunging at Sophie with her manicured nails.

Sophie dodged to the left, caught Camilla by the hair, and drove her knee violently into the heiress’s stomach.

Camilla gasped, doubling over in agony.

Sophie gripped the back of Camilla’s emerald dress and slammed her down onto the floor, pinning her with her knee against her spine and pressing the cold barrel of her pistol directly against Camilla’s temple.

Camilla froze, trembling violently, staring up from the floor with terrified, bloodshot eyes.

"Please..." Camilla whimpered, all her arrogance evaporating into pathetic terror.

"Please don't shoot me..."

Sophie looked down at the woman who had tormented her, the woman whose family had destroyed her life and poisoned her father.

Her finger rested on the trigger.

One squeeze, and vengeance would be paid in full.

Alessandro stood watching, his dark eyes fixed on Sophie, waiting to see what she would choose.

Sophie took a slow, deep breath.

She slowly removed her finger from the trigger and lowered the weapon.

"I am not a monster like your father," Sophie whispered coldly into Camilla’s ear.

"You are going to live, Camilla."

"You are going to live to watch the Russo name dragged through the mud of every federal courtroom in America."

"You are going to spend the next thirty years wearing an orange jumpsuit, scrubbing prison latrines, remembering that the waitress you mocked took down your entire empire."

Sophie stood up and kicked Camilla’s revolver down the service stairwell.

Marco burst into the gallery, blood running from a graze on his cheek, accompanied by six heavily armed Moretti enforcers.

"Boss! The DOJ federal tactical units just breached the front lobby!" Marco announced urgently.

"The audio broadcast went viral across every network!"

"The FBI director just issued an emergency warrant for Franco Russo’s arrest!"

"Franco fled the building in an armored limousine two minutes ago heading toward Brooklyn!"

Alessandro’s face hardened into sheer, unadulterated terror.

"Brooklyn?" Alessandro repeated, his voice dropping into an icy void.

"Why Brooklyn?"

Marco looked at his tablet, his face going chalk-white.

"Boss... the encrypted perimeter sensors at the Red Hook distillery..."

"They're offline."

"Franco knew he was going down."

"He didn't run to escape."

"He took his remaining strike team straight to the bunker to kill the boy."

Sophie’s world stopped spinning.

Her lungs seized in absolute, paralyzing horror.

Leo.

Her little brother was trapped in the Red Hook distillery with only Maria and Dr. Dante.

"Alessandro..." Sophie choked out, grabbing his lapels with frantic, shaking hands.

"Leo! He's going to murder Leo!"

May you like

Alessandro wrapped his powerful arm around her waist, pulling her toward the private exit with an intensity that promised apocalyptic retribution.

"No, he won't," Alessandro swore, his voice thundering with demonic fury.
