Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Pier 54

The Hudson River was a churning void of black water under the heavy storm clouds.

Pier 54 stood like a rotting wooden skeleton against the Manhattan skyline, its rusted steel arches jutting into the rain.

Once a historic dock where the survivors of the Titanic were brought ashore, it was now an abandoned, decaying industrial relic.

Sophie pulled Leo under the shelter of a collapsed warehouse awning, her teeth chattering uncontrollably from the freezing wind.

Leo’s small body was trembling violently against her side.

His lips were turning blue, and every breath he drew produced a dry, wheezing whistle.

"My chest hurts, Sophie," the little boy whimpered, his small fingers digging into her soaked coat.

"I know, baby," Sophie whispered, kissing his cold forehead.

"Just a little longer."

"I promise you, Sophie is going to keep you safe."

She reached into her pocket, fingering the silver crucifix.

Was she walking into a trap?

Had Alessandro lured her here simply to finish what Franco Russo had started?

A set of high-beam headlights suddenly cut through the heavy downpour, blinding her.

Two sleek, armored black Cadillac Escalades rolled silently across the cracked asphalt of the pier, followed by a low, purring Rolls-Royce Phantom.

The vehicles formed a protective semicircle around the mouth of the pier, their engines rumbling like caged beasts.

Sophie pulled Leo behind her back, her muscles coiling to run if she saw a single weapon drawn.

The driver’s door of the lead Escalade opened.

A tall, broad-shouldered man with a military buzz cut and an earpiece stepped out into the rain.

He opened an oversized black umbrella and walked toward the rear door of the Phantom.

The rear door swung open.

Alessandro Moretti stepped out onto the wet pier.

He had discarded his dinner jacket for a long, tailored black wool overcoat that flared in the wind.

He did not look like a man bothered by the storm.

He moved with the terrifying, predatory calm of an apex predator inspecting his territory.

His dark eyes swept over Sophie’s torn clothes, the blood on her scraped knuckles, and the shivering boy hiding behind her legs.

His expression hardened into pure granite.

"You're late, Sophie," Alessandro said, his deep voice carrying easily over the roar of the river.

"Two of Franco Russo’s enforcers broke into my home," Sophie shot back, her voice shaking with rage and adrenaline.

"They tried to shoot my brother."

"Did you send them to test me, or are you just enjoying watching us bleed?"

Alessandro’s lieutenant, the man with the buzz cut, took a threatening step forward.

"Watch your tongue when speaking to Mr. Moretti," the man warned.

"Stand down, Marco," Alessandro commanded without looking at him.

Marco stopped instantly, bowing his head.

Alessandro walked forward, closing the distance between them until he stood right in front of Sophie.

The massive umbrella held by Marco shielded both her and Leo from the lashing rain.

Alessandro slowly knelt down on one knee in the dirty puddles.

He brought his eyes level with six-year-old Leo.

The feared mafia kingpin, whose name made New York prosecutors tremble, reached out with astonishing gentleness.

He unbuttoned his own cashmere scarf and wrapped it around the little boy’s shivering neck.

"You have your father’s eyes, little warrior," Alessandro said softly in fluent, flawless French.

"You are safe now."

"No one will ever kick your door down again."

Leo looked up at the intimidating man, his innocent eyes sensing something genuine beneath the cold exterior.

"Did you know my papa?" Leo asked in a small voice.

Alessandro looked up at Sophie, his dark eyes burning with an emotion she couldn't quite identify.

"Your father saved my life ten years ago in Marseilles," Alessandro said, addressing both the boy and Sophie.

"When my own uncle tried to put a bullet in the back of my skull to seize control of the Moretti shipping docks, Henri Dubois hid me in the French consulate."

"He patched my wounds with his own hands."

"He gave me the passport that allowed me to return to New York and take back my empire."

Sophie felt the world tilt beneath her feet.

"My father never mentioned you," she whispered, her voice cracking.

"Because your father was a smart man," Alessandro replied, standing up to his full, commanding height.

"A diplomat who associates openly with the Moretti family ceases to be a diplomat."

"Henri knew the risks he was taking."

"He discovered that the Russo family was using the diplomatic shipping containers to smuggle untraceable chemical weapons and stolen gold through New York harbor."

"When Henri refused to take Franco Russo’s bribes, Franco framed him."

"Franco bought the French ministers, forged the bank receipts, and made your father look like a traitor to his own country."

Sophie’s hands gripped her coat.

"Where is he, Alessandro?"

"Where is my father?"

Alessandro stared at her, his jaw tightening so hard she could hear the grind of his teeth.

"He is dead, Sophie."

The words hit her like a physical sledgehammer.

She swayed on her feet, the cold asphalt rushing up to meet her.

Before she could hit the ground, Alessandro’s powerful arms caught her around the waist, pulling her firmly against his chest.

His touch was firm, protective, and unmistakably warm against the freezing night.

"He died three months ago in an undisclosed prison hospital in upstate New York," Alessandro murmured, his lips close to her forehead.

"Franco Russo had a guard poison his medicine."

"Henri knew it was coming."

"Before he died, he smuggled that rosary to me through a trusted priest."

"He made me swear on my mother’s grave that I would find you and the boy before Russo did."

Sophie sobbed against his chest, the dam she had maintained for two agonizing years finally breaking completely.

Her father was gone.

The honorable, kind man who used to play Debussy on the piano and teach her about ancient wines had died alone in the dark, branded as a criminal.

Alessandro did not push her away.

He held her tightly, his hand resting on the back of her head, shielding her from the cruel wind.

"I spent six months scouring the city for you, Sophie," Alessandro whispered into her hair.

"You hid well."

"Too well."

"If you hadn't spoken up tonight at L’Étoile Noir to correct Camilla Russo’s pathetic wine order, I would still be searching the gutters of Queens."

Alessandro pulled back slightly, looking down into her tear-streaked face.

"Camilla is Franco Russo’s eldest daughter," Alessandro revealed.

"She was sent to spy on me, to see if I was holding your father’s missing ledger."

"She didn't know who you were tonight, but the moment I walked out on her, Franco’s men started checking the restaurant’s background files."

"They connected your fake social security number to Queens."

Marco stepped forward, checking his glowing tablet.

"Boss, we have multiple vehicles moving down the West Side Highway."

"Russo’s scouts just picked up the chatter from the Queens shooting."

"They know she headed toward Manhattan."

Alessandro’s demeanor instantly shifted from somber reverence to cold, lethal calculation.

He picked Leo up with one arm, cradling the small boy against his chest as if he were made of gold.

With his other hand, he took Sophie’s bruised wrist, pulling her toward the warm interior of the armored Rolls-Royce.

"Get inside," Alessandro commanded.

"From this moment forward, Sophie Dubois, you belong to the house of Moretti."

"And God help any man who tries to take what is mine."
