Chapter 10 - The Safe House Ambush

The armored Lincoln Navigator sped through the empty, rain-slicked lanes of the highway, bypassing the downtown skyline and heading toward a federal safe house tucked away inside a heavily fortified government compound near the northern riverbanks.

In the backseat, Sarah Jenkins typed furiously on a secure, encrypted government laptop, dispatching high-priority directives to federal marshals while keeping a watchful eye on Ava, who sat silently staring out the window at the blurred city lights.

“Marshals are mobilizing at the safe house right now,” Sarah said without looking up from her screen. “Once we get Ethan securely inside federal custody, your father's legal immunity shield officially shatters.”

Ava nodded slowly, though an uneasy, persistent knot of dread continued to twist tightly in her stomach.

Something felt wrong.

Too easy.

Her father was a man who anticipated every counter-move three steps in advance, a chess master of corporate warfare and ruthless survival.

Would he really leave his primary vulnerability exposed so easily?

“Prosecutor Jenkins,” Ava said suddenly, leaning forward between the front seats. “How many people knew you were returning to your office tonight?”

Sarah paused her typing, glancing up at the rearview mirror with a frown.

“Only my direct administrative assistant and the night-duty detail supervisor,” Sarah answered, her brow furrowing slightly as the implication began to dawn on her. “Why do you ask?”

Before Ava could answer, the secure vehicle's dashboard radio crackled to life with a burst of heavy static.

“Unit 4-Delta, be advised—unauthorized vehicle closing in fast from your six o'clock position. Plates are unregistered,” a synthesized dispatch voice warned over the encrypted channel.

Sarah spun around in her seat, looking out the rear window.

Through the rain-streaked glass, two heavy, matte-black SUVs with blackened windows materialized out of the darkness behind them, accelerating at terrifying speed and closing the gap within seconds.

“Hold on!” Sarah shouted, slamming her foot down hard on the gas pedal.

The armored Lincoln surged forward, its powerful engine roaring as it tore down the highway lane, but the two black SUVs didn't drop back.

Instead, they split up, flanking the Lincoln on both the left and right sides, effectively boxing them in against the concrete median of the highway.

“They're trying to force us off the road!” Ava yelled over the screech of tires and roaring wind.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic crash echoed through the cabin as the SUV on the left slammed its reinforced steel bumper directly into the side panel of the Lincoln, sending sparks flying against the guardrail.

Sarah fought fiercely with the steering wheel, struggling to maintain control of the heavy vehicle as it fishtailed dangerously across the wet asphalt.

“They're not trying to arrest us!” Sarah shouted, gritting her teeth as another brutal side-impact shook the car violently. “They're trying to destroy the evidence and eliminate everyone in this car!”
