Chapter 2 - The Ghost of 15 Years Ago

The heavy oak door clicked shut behind Ava as she staggered out of her father's study, the cold air of the empty hallway rushing into her lungs like icy water.
Her fingers clutched the opaque black envelope so tightly that the thick paper threatened to tear beneath her grip.
Every single footstep she took down the grand staircase felt heavy, unnatural, and detached, as if she were walking through someone else's nightmare.
Fifteen years of grief, mourning, and quiet acceptance evaporated in less than ten minutes, replaced by a suffocating storm of betrayal, confusion, and raw terror.
Marcus Reed was waiting for her at the base of the stairs, standing rigidly beside the front entrance with his hands clasped neatly behind his back.
His expression did not change an inch as Ava approached, though his sharp eyes instantly scanned her face, reading every flicker of shock and emotional turmoil.
“Did you receive your instructions clearly, Miss Morgan?” Marcus asked, his tone devoid of any human warmth, sounding more like an automated machine than a man.
Ava stopped dead in her tracks, turning her cold gaze toward the security chief who had served as her father's shadow for over two decades.
“You knew, didn't you?” Ava whispered, stepping close enough to see the faint scar running along Marcus's jawline. “You knew Ethan was alive the entire time.”
Marcus didn't flinch, nor did he break eye contact.
“My job is to protect this family, and to ensure that Mr. Morgan's directives are carried out without hesitation,” Marcus replied flatly, his voice dropping into a warning tone. “Whatever personal history exists between your father and your brother is outside my purview, Ava. But your instructions for tonight are not.”
Ava let out a bitter, humorless laugh that echoed hollowly through the high-ceilinged foyer.
“My father wants me to murder my own brother, Marcus, and you're standing here talking about directives?” she hissed, her voice trembling with rising fury. “How many other lies have you helped him bury over the past fifteen years?”
Marcus's face remained an unreadable mask of iron.
“If you choose to walk away from this assignment, the consequences will ripple far beyond these walls,” Marcus said, stepping aside just enough to grant her a clear path to the front door. “Your father does not bluff. If Ethan speaks to the authorities, the Morgan empire—and everyone tethered to it—collapses into ruin overnight.”
Without another word, Ava shoved past him, threw open the heavy front door, and stormed out into the chilly night air.
She climbed back into her car, the leather interior feeling suffocatingly small compared to the vast, dark world outside.
She tossed the black envelope onto the passenger seat, tore open the glove compartment, and pulled out her personal burner phone—a device she kept strictly for confidential matters away from her corporate life.
Her fingers shook violently as she powered on the device and dialed a sequence of numbers she hadn't used in months.
The call connected almost instantly on the other end.
“Speak,” a gruff, tired voice answered through the speaker.
“Julian, it's Ava,” she said, her voice cracking slightly. “I need you to run a priority trace and background dossier for me immediately. Off the grid. No corporate servers.”
On the other end of the line, Julian Vance, her most trusted private investigator and former cyber-intelligence analyst, let out a sharp sigh.
“It's nearly midnight, Ava. What kind of mess are you dragging me into this time?” Julian asked, hearing the desperate edge in her tone.
“It's about Ethan,” she breathed out, tears finally spilling over her lashes.
A heavy, stunned silence hung over the phone line for several long seconds.
“Ethan?” Julian repeated slowly, disbelief dripping from every syllable. “Your brother has been dead for a decade and a half. What are you talking about?”
“He isn't dead,” Ava said, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper as she glanced back up at the single illuminated window of her father's study. “My father found him three months ago. And tonight... tonight my father ordered me to assassinate him.”
Julian swore loudly on the other end, the sound of rustling papers indicating he had just sat straight up in bed.
“Jesus Christ, Ava. Are you out of your mind? Kill your own brother?” Julian demanded, panic surging in his voice. “Where is he right now? What are you going to do?”
Ava picked up the black envelope from the passenger seat, tearing the wax seal open with her thumb.
Inside fell a set of coordinates, a keycard to a downtown residential parking garage, a suppressed 9mm pistol, and a dossier stamped with a confidential address in the industrial district.
“I'm going to find him before anyone else does,” Ava declared, her voice hardening into absolute resolve. “Send me every piece of digital footprint you can dig up on that address within the next ten minutes, Julian. My father's men are already moving.”

She dropped the burner phone onto the console, shoved the key into the ignition, and slammed her foot down on the gas pedal.
The car roared to life, shooting down the long private driveway and leaving the dark, menacing shadow of the Morgan estate behind her.
