Chapter 4 - The Breach at Ground Zero

Lieutenant Daniel Reeves stood beneath the flickering emergency exit sign of the subterranean garage.

His white uniform shirt was torn at the shoulder, soaked in dark, oxidized blood that had dried against his skin.

His face was pale, his jaw bruised, and his department badge hung crookedly from a frayed lanyard around his neck.

"Lower the iron, Carter," Reeves rasped, his voice raw from smoke and exhaustion.

"If I wanted you dead, I would have let the breach team toss flashbangs down the shaft while you were climbing."

Dominic did not lower his weapon by a millimeter.

"Who is this, Emily?"

"My direct handler," Emily said, her weapon remaining completely locked on Reeves' chest.

"The only man in the entire department who had the encryption codes to my undercover identity."

"Which explains why the strike team knew my name before they reached the second floor," she added coldly.

Reeves spat a mouthful of dark blood onto the concrete floor and raised his free hand in surrender.

"They didn't get your identity from my desk, Emily."

"They pulled your active assignment authorization directly from the Deputy Chief's terminal two hours ago."

"Robert Hale?" Emily demanded, disbelief cracking her tactical calm.

"Hale is the second-in-command of the entire metropolitan force."

"Hale is the architect," Reeves said, pulling a shattered cellular phone from his coat pocket and tossing it toward Dominic.

Dominic caught the device with one hand, his thumb scrolling through the cracked, glowing screen.

On the display was an encrypted broadcast dispatched through the department's tactical priority network:

CODE BLACK: OPERATION SLEEPING DOGS TERMINATED.

TARGET: RECOVER DETECTIVE CARTER’S HARDWARE AND BODY CAMERA.

AUTHORIZATION: DEPUTY CHIEF HALE.

"Why does Hale care about my body camera?" Emily asked, her hand instinctively touching the small black recording unit mounted on her chest.

"Because of what you recorded at four o'clock this afternoon," Reeves said, leaning heavily against the concrete pillar.

"When you responded to that hit-and-run outside the municipal court."

Emily's mind raced through the chaotic events of the afternoon.

She had been called away from her maid duties to respond as an emergency backup unit for an attacked witness.

The victim was an accountant who had worked under Martin Shaw.

The ambulance was pulling away when a senior official walked across the perimeter tape.

"Play the cached buffer, Emily," Reeves urged, his breathing shallow.

"Look at the man standing behind the medical van."

Emily clicked the playback interface on her wrist-mounted tactical monitor.

The small LCD screen flickered to life, showing the rain-slicked asphalt of the courthouse parking structure.

An injured man was being lifted into the rear of an emergency vehicle.

Walking slowly past the flashing red lights was an older man in a tailored civilian overcoat.

His silver hair was combed back, his profile visible under the mercury-vapor streetlamps for less than three seconds.

In his gloved right hand, he held a medical syringe.

Dominic looked over Emily's shoulder at the screen, his breathing turning shallow and dangerous.

Margaret stepped out of the Cadillac, her cane striking the concrete floor with startling force.

She leaned close to the glowing monitor, her eyes widening with a cold, terrifying recognition.

"That is him," Margaret whispered, her voice trembling not with fear, but with sixty years of suppressed hatred.

Dominic turned to his grandmother.

"Who is he, Grandma?"

"That is the man who walked out of your father's bedroom six years ago carrying a black medical bag," the old woman said.

"He told me your father died peacefully in his sleep."

"He wore a detective's badge on his belt that night."

Emily lowered the monitor, the horrifying reality clicking into place like the tumblers of a safe.

Deputy Chief Robert Hale did not just protect the Vale family's corrupt operations.

He orchestrated the execution of Dominic's father to install Richard as a puppet leader.

And Martin Shaw was the financial bridge laundering the entire conspiracy's profits.

Before another word could be spoken, the heavy industrial roll-up door at the far end of the garage buckled inward with a deafening roar.

A black tactical armored truck rammed through the reinforced steel slats, showering the concrete with sparks and twisted metal.

High-intensity LED searchlights illuminated the entire garage in blinding white light.

"Cover!" Emily screamed, shoving Margaret back inside the Cadillac and slamming the door.

A wall of automatic gunfire erupted from the truck’s gun ports.

Bullets chewed through the concrete pillars, sending stone fragments raining down like shrapnel.

Dominic dropped to one knee behind the Cadillac’s rear tire, firing four measured shots through the truck’s radiator grille.

Reeves drew his service weapon, returning fire alongside Emily as they pinned themselves behind the vehicle's heavy steel body.

"We can't hold this bay!" Reeves yelled over the deafening cacophony of gunfire.

"They have heavy plate and superior fire angles!"

"Get in the car!" Dominic roared, reaching through the driver’s side window and twisting the mechanical ignition tumbler.

The massive V8 engine roared to life with a deep, guttural growl that shook the floorboards.

"Reeves, drive!" Dominic ordered, shoving his wounded lieutenant into the driver’s seat.

"I’m taking the passenger window!"

Emily scrambled into the back seat beside Margaret, reloading her Glock with a fresh magazine.

"Dominic, the main ramp is blocked by their support vehicles!" Emily shouted.

"We aren't taking the main ramp," Dominic replied, his eyes burning with cold fury.

He leaned across the front seat, shifted the heavy transmission lever into reverse, and slammed his foot down on Reeves' boot over the gas pedal.

The heavy Cadillac surged backward, its steel bumper smashing through the wooden security gates of the old brewery tunnel behind the wine cellar.

The car plunged into total darkness just as a rocket-propelled grenade detonated against the concrete pillars where they had stood seconds before.
