Chapter 10 - The Reckoning at Terminal Nine

Midnight settled over Terminal Nine like a shroud of black iron and cold ocean salt.

The deep-water shipping berths were lined with towering rows of rusted shipping containers, stacked five high against the ink-black sky.

Floodlights illuminated the concrete pier where a Panamanian cargo ship sat tied to the bollards, its diesel engines rumbling with a low, rhythmic vibration.

Beneath the primary gantry crane, three black luxury SUVs were parked in a defensive semi-circle.

Martin Shaw stood beside an open industrial container, supervising four armed mercenaries loading heavy steel flight cases into the cargo hold.

Inside those cases were sixty million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds, duplicate corporate ledgers, and foreign bank credentials.

Richard Vale paced nervously near the rear bumper of the center SUV, wearing a heavy winter parka and clutching a burner phone to his ear.

"Where is Hale?" Richard shouted into the receiver over the noise of the ship’s generators.

"He was supposed to be here with the police escort twenty minutes ago!"

"Hale is already here, Uncle Richard," a voice called out from the darkness between the shipping containers.

Richard froze, dropping his phone onto the wet asphalt.

Dominic Vale stepped into the glare of the floodlights, wearing his father’s black coat, the twin chrome Colt .45 pistols resting in his hands.

Flanking him on the left was Emily Carter, her police tactical shotgun leveled from the hip.

On the right, Sal Moretti and eight heavily armed loyalists fanned out in a synchronized tactical sweep, cutting off the escape route to the pier.

"Dominic!" Richard shrieked, scrambling backward behind the armed mercenaries.

"Shoot him! Kill him now!"

The four private contractors reached for their assault rifles, but Emily was faster.

She racked the slide of her shotgun and fired a single non-lethal slug into the lead mercenary's knee, dropping him instantly to the concrete.

Sal’s men opened fire with disciplined, suppressed bursts, disarming the remaining three guards before they could raise their barrels.

Martin Shaw dropped to his knees, throwing his hands over his bald head, trembling in utter terror.

"Dominic, please!" Shaw screamed, tears mixing with the cold rain on his face.

"It was Richard's idea! Richard came to me six years ago with the offshore accounts!"

"He said your father was going to cut me out of the company!"

Dominic walked forward slowly, his boots crunching on the wet gravel, stopping two feet from his trembling uncle.

He leveled the barrel of his father’s Colt directly at Richard’s forehead.

"You held my hand at his funeral, Uncle," Dominic whispered, his voice terrifyingly calm.

"You stood in front of two hundred people at St. Patrick's Cathedral and told everyone that Vincent Vale was the greatest brother a man could ask for."

"Dominic... I’m your blood!" Richard sobbed, sinking to his knees on the freezing pavement.

"You can't kill your own family!"

"My family died when you gave the key to the doctor with the syringe," Dominic replied, his finger tightening around the trigger.

"Dominic, don't," Emily said quietly, stepping up beside him.

Dominic did not lower the weapon.

"He had my father executed, Emily."

"He had your father murdered fifteen years ago."

"He deserves a bullet in the dirt."

"He deserves twenty consecutive life sentences in a federal penitentiary where he will spend thirty years rotting in an eight-foot cage," Emily argued, her voice firm and unyielding.

"If you pull that trigger, you become the butcher Hale wants you to be."

"You prove to the world that you are nothing more than a syndicate killer."

"Let the law finish what your father started."

Dominic stared at his sobbing uncle for five long, suffocating seconds.

Slowly, he lowered the hammer of the Colt .45 and stepped back.

"Handcuff them to the container," Dominic ordered Sal's men.

Before Sal could step forward, the high-intensity searchlight of a police helicopter illuminated the entire dock in blinding white radiance.

A voice roared over the aerial loudspeaker:

THIS IS THE METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT. DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND STEP AWAY FROM THE CONTAINERS.

Six unmarked black tactical assault vans tore around the perimeter fence, screeching to a halt thirty yards away.

Dozens of tactical officers in heavy black body armor dismounted, taking cover behind their doors with assault rifles raised.

Stepping out of the lead vehicle was Deputy Chief Robert Hale, holding a suppressed automatic rifle in his gloved hands.

Beside him, two snipers climbed onto the hoods of the vans, their green laser sights dancing across Dominic’s chest.

"Well done, Detective Carter," Hale’s voice echoed across the pier, cold, triumphant, and utterly lethal.

"You located the suspects and preserved the assets."

"Now step away from the Vale boy so my tactical unit can execute the arrest warrant."

Emily stepped directly in front of Dominic, raising her left hand high to display the gold detective badge hanging from her neck.

In her right hand, she held the micro-recorder containing the morning's courthouse surveillance.

"Deputy Chief Robert Hale!" Emily shouted, her voice cutting through the thrum of the helicopter rotors.

"I am arresting you for the capital murder of Vincent Vale, Detective Thomas Carter, and treason against the United States!"

Hale did not hesitate, nor did he negotiate.

He permitted himself a cold, arrogant smile as he raised his rifle and looked directly at his snipers.

"Take the shot."

A sniper's bullet cracked through the ocean air, striking the concrete inches from Emily’s boot as total war erupted across Terminal Nine.CHAPTER 11 — The Crossfire on the Pier

The high-velocity rifle round shattered the wet concrete between Emily Carter’s combat boots, throwing a stinging spray of stone and saltwater into her face.

Dominic Vale lunged forward instantly, his father’s black overcoat flaring like wings as he grabbed Emily’s tactical vest and tackled her behind the heavy steel rim of a twenty-ton shipping container.

A fraction of a second later, a synchronized volley of automatic fire ripped through the empty space where she had stood.

Bullets hammered the corrugated steel walls of the cargo containers with deafening, metallic clangs that vibrated through Dominic’s spine.

Sal Moretti did not wait for an order from his young boss.

The seventy-year-old veteran dropped behind a heavy diesel forklift and leveled his twelve-gauge combat shotgun at the perimeter fence.

"Return fire, boys!" Sal roared into the damp night air.

"Protect Donna Margaret’s boy and the girl!"

Sal’s eight seasoned loyalists opened up with steady, disciplined bursts from their suppressed semi-automatic rifles.

Two of Hale’s tactical contractors advancing past the crane gantry collapsed onto the grease-slicked asphalt as lead chewed through their unarmored flanks.

The police helicopter thrashed the freezing ocean air fifty feet above the container stacks, its searchlight pinning Dominic and Emily against the metal hull.

The aerial loudspeaker cracked again with mechanical distortion:

ALL TARGETS ARE DESIGNATED ARMED HOSTILES.

AUTHORIZATION FOR LETHAL FORCE CONFIRMED.

Deputy Chief Robert Hale advanced behind the engine block of his armored command vehicle, firing controlled bursts from his custom carbine.

"Carter!" Hale shouted over the deafening mechanical roar of the blades above.

"Throw out the satellite recorder and the ledger files!"

"Do that, and I will let the boy die quickly with a single round!"

Dominic checked the cylinder of his chrome Colt .45, his jaw set in a hard, merciless line.

"Your former boss doesn't seem very interested in a plea bargain, Detective."

Emily wiped blood and asphalt grit from her cheek with the back of her gloved tactical hand.

"Hale knows that if a single federal agent hears that audio recording, he goes straight to federal death row."

"He cannot afford to leave a single living witness on this dock."

"Then we make sure he runs out of ammunition before we run out of breath," Dominic replied coldly.

He reached inside his coat, pulled out the satellite phone retrieved from Vincent Vale’s iron bunker safe, and thrust it into Emily’s chest.

"Speed dial number one connects directly to Special Agent Marcus Thorne at the United States Marshals Service."

Emily stared at the heavy military-grade handset in disbelief.

"Marcus Thorne is the regional director of federal fugitive operations."

"My father kept Thorne on retainer for eight years before he died," Dominic explained, keeping his head beneath the container's steel lip.

"Thorne knew Vincent Vale was trying to dismantle the narcotics pipeline from the inside."

"Thorne refused to coordinate with municipal police because he knew the department was compromised by Hale."

A sniper round from the gantry tower punched through the upper corner of their container, showering them with sparks.

Emily flipped open the encrypted satellite unit and pressed the green send toggle.

The call connected within two seconds of military digital routing.

"Thorne," a gravelly, authoritative voice answered through the speaker.

"Agent Thorne, this is Detective Emily Carter, shield number four-two-eight-nine, Organized Crime Division," Emily shouted over the gunfire.

"I am standing at Terminal Nine beside Dominic Vale."

"We are currently taking active, sustained automatic fire from rogue tactical units commanded by Deputy Chief Robert Hale."

The line remained silent for half a second before Thorne’s voice dropped into immediate tactical urgency.

"Detective Carter, internal affairs logged your status as compromised and missing six hours ago."

"I am not missing, Agent Thorne!" Emily yelled, ducking as another burst tore through the metal overhead.

"I have the physical evidence confirming the capital homicide of Vincent Vale and Detective Thomas Carter."

"The contracts, the offshore banking codes for Orion Holdings, and the original toxicology sheets are secured in my bag."

"Hold your perimeter, Detective," Thorne commanded without hesitation.

"Federal tactical teams are currently staging at the harbor airfield two miles north of your coordinates."

"I am scrambling three Blackhawk interceptors and eighty federal marshals under Homeland Security intervention authority."

"ETA is eight minutes."

"Eight minutes is an eternity under thirty-caliber suppressive fire, Agent!" Emily shouted.

"Survive seven minutes and fifty seconds, Carter, and we will take the city back," Thorne answered before cutting the link.

Dominic looked over at the shipping lane where Martin Shaw and Uncle Richard were still cowering beside the open steel container.

Two of Hale’s contractors broke from the perimeter line, sprinting toward Shaw to seize the flight cases containing the bearer bonds.

"They are securing the money before the air clears!" Dominic warned.

"Sal!" Dominic shouted across the firing lane.

"Lay down a suppression corridor along the eastern crane track!"

Sal racked his shotgun with a feral grin, leaning around the heavy forklift wheel.

"With pleasure, Dominic!"

Sal’s veterans shifted their fire in unison, cutting a blistering arc of lead across the concrete.

The two contractors were driven back behind the wheels of the black SUVs, their advance completely shattered.

Dominic looked into Emily’s eyes, his expression calm, lethal, and unwavering.

"Can you cover my advance across the container gap, Detective?"

"What are you doing, Dominic?"

"I am going to get my father's money back," Dominic said, cocking both chrome hammers of his Colt .45.

"And I am going to make sure Uncle Richard stays alive long enough to see a federal courtroom."

"You are insane," Emily said, though she had already switched her shotgun to full battery.

"I am a Vale," Dominic answered with a ghost of a smirk.

"Now give me five seconds of pure hell."

May you like

Emily stepped out from behind the steel barrier, her shotgun roaring three consecutive times, sending heavy steel slugs smashing through the windshield of Hale’s armored SUV.

Dominic broke into a dead sprint across the rain-soaked concrete, disappearing into the gunsmoke.
