Chapter 12 - The False Patriarch’s Toast

Inside the grand ballroom of the Marino estate, crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, warm glow over an atmosphere of suffocating terror.

Forty of the most powerful syndicate bosses, shipping magnates, and council elders sat along the elongated banquet tables in stunned, uneasy silence.

Heavy velvet draperies had been drawn shut across the towering floor-to-ceiling windows, sealing out the raging storm outside.

Along the perimeter of the room, twenty mercenaries in sterile black tactical uniforms stood at parade rest, automatic rifles slung across their chests.

At the raised dais where Anthony Marino had once held court, Uncle Paul stood holding a crystal goblet filled with vintage scotch.

His silver hair was combed with meticulous elegance, his tailor-made tuxedo pristine, but his eyes carried the manic gleam of a cornered predator claiming victory.

"My brothers, my dear friends," Paul announced, his rich baritone voice echoing off the gilded plaster ceiling.

"We gather tonight under the heaviest shadow this family has ever endured."

"Not two hours ago, our beloved Victor and my dear sister-in-law Margaret were brutally intercepted along Highway Nine."

"Corrupt federal authorities, working hand-in-hand with rival cartels, opened fire on their vehicle without warning."

A collective shudder moved through the older men at the tables, several crossing themselves in performative mourning.

"Victor was a brave boy," Paul continued, placing a hand dramatically over his heart.

"He was a fierce warrior, but he lacked the political subtlety required to navigate this changing world."

"He brought federal scrutiny down upon our shipping lanes, and in doing so, he brought down retribution upon his own mother."

An elderly boss named Salvatore, who had served Anthony for forty years, pushed himself up from his chair with shaking hands.

"And what about Ethan, Paul?" Salvatore rasped, his voice cutting through Paul’s manufactured grief.

"Fourteen months ago you stood in this very room and told us Ethan died in a burning car."

"Now Victor and Margaret are gone in the same breath?"

"How is it that every heir with Anthony’s blood ends up in a grave, while you stand on the dais holding the ledger?"

Paul’s smile cooled into a razor-thin sneer, his eyes gesturing toward two mercenaries standing behind Salvatore’s chair.

The mercenaries stepped forward, their heavy boots thudding against the parquet flooring, their hands resting on their sidearms.

"Watch your tongue, Salvatore," Paul warned softly, the warmth vanishing completely from his tone.

"Tragedy does not ask for permission before it strikes an empire."

"With Victor gone and no legitimate heir remaining, our family faces total dissolution."

"The Russian syndicates are moving into our northern docks, federal indictments are being unsealed, and we are bleeding millions every week."

Paul raised a stack of heavy parchment documents embossed with the official Marino family seal.

"These papers transfer full executive authority over the trust, the shipping terminals, and the offshore accounts to me."

"I do not take this mantle out of ambition, but out of solemn duty."

"I need every elder in this room to step forward, sign the registry of succession, and pledge their loyalty."

"Those who sign will see their dividends doubled by next quarter."

"And those who refuse?" Salvatore challenged, staring defiantly at the armed guards behind him.

Paul took a slow, deliberate sip of his scotch, setting the crystal glass onto the mahogany podium with a sharp click.

"Those who refuse are welcome to join Victor on the highway," Paul whispered.

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the grand hall, broken only by the muffled rumble of thunder outside.

Several younger capos began to rise from their seats, intimidated by the visible weaponry, reaching for the gold pens on the table.

"Sign the documents, gentlemen," Paul urged, his voice returning to its smooth, patronizing cadence.

"Let us put this tragedy behind us and toast to the new era of Marino leadership."

Paul lifted his glass high above his head, waiting for the room to mirror his gesture.

"To the future," Paul proclaimed.

Before a single elder could raise their glass, a deafening crack of thunder shook the foundation of the estate.

Simultaneously, every single light in the grand ballroom died.

The massive chandeliers went dark in an instant, plunging the cavernous room into absolute, pitch-black void.

Panicked shouts erupted across the room as chairs scraped violently against the floor.

"Hold your positions!" Paul screamed from the dais, his voice cracking with sudden panic.

"Guards, switch to night optics! Lock the exits!"

The high-pitched whine of tactical night-vision goggles powering up sounded from the perimeter walls.

Then, with a concussive boom that rattled the crystal pendants hanging from the ceiling, the ten-foot oak ballroom doors burst open.

The beam of a high-powered tactical halogen spotlight pierced the blackness, cutting through the shadows like a blade of pure white fire.

Standing in the center of the blinding beam was Margaret Marino.

She wore her dark traveling coat, soaked with rain, her head held high with terrifying majesty, her ivory cane striking the floor with rhythmic thunder.

"Paul," Margaret’s voice boomed through the ballroom, reverberating off the marble walls like a biblical decree.

"You always were too cowardly to wait until the bodies were cold."

The room fell into stunned, breathless paralysis.

"Margaret?" Paul stammered, stepping back toward the draperies, his hand frantically reaching beneath his tuxedo jacket.

"That’s impossible... you were neutralized..."

Victor stepped into the light beside his mother, an assault rifle held at low-ready, his eyes locked onto his uncle.

"You should have verified the kills yourself, Uncle Paul," Victor said, his baritone voice dripping with ice.

The gathered elders gasped, several falling to their knees in relief and terror as Victor’s presence reasserted command over the house.

"Guards, shoot them!" Paul shrieked, pointing a trembling finger toward the doorway.

"Open fire on them now!"

Not a single shot was fired.

From the mezzanine above, Marco and ten heavily armed Marino loyalists racked the bolts of their weapons, pointing red laser indicators directly at the chests of Paul’s mercenaries.

"Drop your weapons or be butchered where you stand," Marco shouted from the balcony.

The mercenaries, recognizing that the tactical advantage had completely reversed, slowly lowered their rifles and raised their hands.

"This is an outrage!" Paul shouted, backing away toward the corner of the dais.

"Victor, you are harboring traitors! You brought armed thugs into our family council!"

"I didn't bring thugs, Paul," Victor answered, stepping aside to reveal the figure standing directly behind him.

"I brought the true heir of Anthony Marino."

Ethan stepped forward into the brilliant spotlight, his battered face bruised and bloody, his jaw set in stone.

Beside him walked Lily Parker, holding her service pistol with steady, unwavering resolve.

The entire ballroom gasped in collective, horrified disbelief.

Salvatore dropped his crystal glass, the vintage wine splashing across his trousers as his mouth fell wide open.

"Ethan?" Salvatore wept, raising trembling hands to his face. "Merciful God... it’s Ethan..."

Paul’s face drained of every ounce of blood, his skin turning the color of wet chalk.

His knees buckled, and he was forced to catch himself against the mahogany podium to keep from collapsing onto the floor.

"No..." Paul whimpered, his eyes bulging as he stared at the nephew he had declared dead fourteen months ago.

"You burned... you died on Black Ridge..."

May you like

"I survived your fire, Uncle Paul," Ethan said, his voice echoing with absolute, lethal certainty.

"And I have returned to take back my father's house."
