Chapter 4 - Behind the Fortress Walls

The Marino estate went into an immediate, silent lockdown that chilled Lily to the marrow.

Heavy iron gates ground shut at the perimeter of the sprawling twenty-acre estate.

Men in dark suits and discreet tactical vests took up positions along the perimeter walls, their rifles concealed but ready.

Victor escorted Lily personally up the grand spiraling staircase, far away from the panicked murmurs of the extended family.

He guided her into the secure north wing, an area reinforced with steel-core doors and bullet-resistant glass.

"Sit down," Victor instructed, gesturing toward a deep leather armchair beside an unlit marble fireplace.

Lily sank into the chair, clutching her injured thumb with a fresh linen bandage Victor had handed her.

The sheer opulence of the mansion felt suffocating, an gilded cage built on decades of violence and secrets.

Victor locked the heavy oak door behind them, pocketing the key before walking over to a massive mahogany desk.

He pulled Lily’s phone from his pocket, laying it beside a high-end forensic scanning tablet.

"Unlock it again," Victor ordered gently, the earlier venom completely vanished from his voice.

Lily leaned forward and entered her passcode, her hands still trembling from the adrenaline coursing through her.

Victor connected the phone via cable, mirroring the screen to the larger display on his desk.

"I need every message, every voicemail, every location stamp you shared with him," Victor said.

"I need to reconstruct his last six months on earth."

Lily swallowed hard, watching the screen illuminate with hundreds of ordinary, domestic memories.

"We didn't live like this," Lily said, her voice soft and strained as she looked around the luxurious room.

"We lived in a fourth-floor walk-up in the industrial district near the railyard."

"He worked odd jobs as a mechanic under the name Eric Vance."

"He told me he had no family left, that his parents died in an industrial accident years ago."

Victor stopped scrolling through the files, his dark eyes darkening with intense pain.

"He erased us to protect you," Victor murmured, his fingers tightening against the desk edge.

"If Ethan used his real name, my father’s enemies—or Calder—would have hunted him down within forty-eight hours."

Lily leaned back, the reality of Ethan’s deception settling heavily upon her shoulders.

"He lied to me every single day," she whispered, tears threatening to spill again.

"He looked me in the eye and swore he was just a regular guy who wanted a quiet life."

"He didn't lie about loving you," Victor countered, his tone unexpectedly gentle.

He swiped to a video recorded seven months ago, hitting play.

The screen showed Ethan sitting on the floor of Lily's small living room, carefully repairing the clasp of her cheap necklace.

On the recording, Ethan looked straight into the camera, a warm, bittersweet smile gracing his features.

"If I ever have to leave, Lily-bug," Ethan said on the video, his voice filling the quiet study, "remember this."

"Everything I ever gave you has a purpose."

"Don't lose the ring, no matter what happens."

Victor paused the video, staring at his brother’s digital image with an intensity that seemed almost unbearable.

"That was his voice," Victor said softly, running a hand over his tired face.

"I haven't heard his voice in over a year."

A soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door, three measured taps followed by a pause.

Victor drew a suppressed pistol from beneath his jacket before approaching the entrance.

He checked the camera feed on the wall panel, seeing his mother standing outside with her loyal butler, Thomas.

Victor opened the door, allowing Margaret to enter before locking it securely once more.

Margaret walked forward without her cane, her familiar hands navigating the furniture until she reached Lily’s chair.

She placed a warm, frail hand on Lily’s trembling shoulder, squeezing with reassuring strength.

"You loved my son," Margaret stated, not asking a question, but stating an undeniable truth.

"I did," Lily choked out, covering the old woman’s hand with her own.

"I loved him more than anything."

"And he loved you enough to give you the ring his father died wearing," Margaret replied.

"That ring is not an ornament, Miss Parker."

"It is the key to the Marino vault."

Lily blinked, looking down at the heavy silver band dangling from the chain around her neck.

"The vault?" Lily asked, confusion furrowing her brow.

Margaret turned her sightless face toward Victor, her expression transforming into cold, ruthless resolve.

"Your father had three private safety deposit boxes scattered across offshore accounts," Margaret explained.

"The primary box in Zurich requires a biometric scan and a unique key carved into the inner circumference of that ring."

"Calder spent the last six months searching our private estate, tearing apart Anthony’s old offices looking for it."

"He told me it was lost in the fire with Ethan’s body."

Victor stepped toward his mother, his jaw tight with fury.

"Calder didn't just stage Ethan's death," Victor said, the pieces assembling into a monstrous picture.

"He tried to eliminate Ethan to get his hands on Father’s offshore accounts."

"Ethan must have realized the ambush was coming, escaped the crash, and went into hiding."

"And eight months ago," Lily added, her voice trembling, "Calder finally figured out Ethan was still alive."

Margaret nodded grimly, her fingers gripping Lily’s shoulder with fierce determination.

"Thomas heard someone making an encrypted call from the hallway right after the glass shattered downstairs," Margaret said.

"Calder already knows there is a maid in this house wearing Ethan’s ring."

"He will be coming here tonight to finish what he started fourteen months ago."
