Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A PARASITIC DYNASTY

The silence in the bedroom grew so heavy and dense that you could hear the faint, rhythmic ticking of the antique clock on the mantelpiece echoing down the hallway.

Daniel blinked once, twice, trying to reassemble his arrogant facade as he took a slow, heavy step across the carpet toward me.

“Who was on the phone, Elena?” Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh, commanding register meant to intimidate me back into compliance.

“Put it on speaker. Right now. Who the hell are you talking to at five in the morning?”

I didn’t answer him.

Instead, I lowered the phone from my ear, tapped the screen to end the secure encrypted call with Detective Reeves, and slipped the device slowly into the pocket of my cotton robe.

Margaret pushed past Daniel, her face twisted into an ugly mask of venomous suspicion as she stepped right up to me, her sharp nose nearly touching my bruised cheek.

“Are you hiding something from my son?” Margaret hissed, her voice vibrating with shrill hysteria.

“I knew you were up to no good! Sneaking around, whispering on phones, acting like you’re better than this family! Daniel, check her phone! Take it from her right now before she does something to undermine your business!”

Daniel lunged forward with surprising speed, his thick fingers reaching out to snatch the phone from my pocket.

Before his hand could make contact, I stepped backward, my posture stiff and unyielding, my eyes locked onto his with a terrifying, absolute calmness that made him halt mid-movement.

“Touch me again, Daniel,” I said softly, every syllable dripping with a chilling, lethal promise, “and you won't just lose your business. You’ll lose your freedom.”

Daniel let out a harsh, nervous laugh, glancing back at his mother as if looking for reassurance.

“Listen to her, Mom,” Daniel scoffed, trying to inject bravado back into his voice.

“She’s losing her mind. Sitting in that little home office of hers all day staring at blueprints has made her paranoid. She thinks she’s some kind of corporate mastermind.”

Margaret nodded eagerly, her wrinkled face smoothing over as she bought back into the comforting illusion of her son’s infallible superiority.

“Of course she’s losing her mind,” Margaret agreed smugly, folding her arms across her silk robe.

“Women like her can’t handle real responsibility. That’s why she needs guidance. That’s why my son has to manage the finances and keep this household running properly.”

“Manage the finances,” I repeated, letting out a dry, humourless chuckle that made the air in the room feel suddenly electric.

“Is that what you call transferring two hundred and fifty thousand dollars from my business operating account into your personal offshore brokerage firm, Daniel?”

The color drained entirely from Daniel’s face in a fraction of a second, leaving him looking like a corpse that had been left out in the cold rain.

The nervous twitch returned to the corner of his left eye.

“What… what are you talking about?” Daniel stammered, his voice pitching up an octave as he took a sudden step backward.

“You’re delusional! You don’t know anything about my tech firm’s liquidity!”

“My tech firm?” I corrected him smoothly, walking past him toward the en-suite bathroom to wash the dried blood from my split lip.

“Daniel, sweetheart, let’s be entirely accurate for once in your miserable, fraudulent life.”

“The seed capital for your tech startup didn't come from angel investors or venture capitalists.”

“It came from the liquidation of my grandmother’s estate in Vermont.”

“The office building you lease downtown? Paid for by my architectural consultancy’s primary earnings.”

“And the very roof over your mother’s ungrateful head?” I added, pausing in the doorway to look back at them with absolute, unadulterated disdain.

“My name is the only one listed on the county property deed in the clerk’s office downtown.”

Margaret let out a sharp, ear-piercing shriek of sheer disbelief, whirling around to face Daniel with wide, frantic eyes.

“What is she talking about, Daniel?!” Margaret shrieked, grabbing her son by the shoulders and shaking him violently.

“Tell me she’s lying! Tell me my son owns this house! You promised me you were the sole provider! You promised me we were secure!”

Daniel shoved his mother’s hands away, his face contorting with blind panic and murderous rage as he turned his attention back to me.

“You bitch,” Daniel hissed, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned stark white.

“You set me up. You’ve been spying on me.”

May you like

“I didn’t have to spy on you, Daniel,” I replied coldly, splashing cool water over my bruised face and watching the pink-tinged water swirl down the porcelain drain.

“You were simply too arrogant, too greedy, and too profoundly stupid to realize that a woman who designs high-security corporate complexes knows how to secure her own perimeter.”
