Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Ledger

The private study on the second floor smelled of old leather, pipe tobacco, and aged single-malt whiskey.

Floor-to-ceiling walnut bookshelves lined three walls, housing thousands of rare volumes bound in calfskin and gold leaf.

A massive green banker’s desk stood near the balcony windows, covered in shipping manifests, legal briefs, and architectural blueprints.

I stood just inside the threshold, hesitating to step onto the antique Persian rug with my rubber-soled work shoes.

""Close the door and sit down, Sophie,"" Gabriel said without looking up from a leather document folder.

I pushed the heavy oak door shut until the latch clicked, then walked hesitantly to one of the high-backed leather armchairs facing the desk.

The room was completely silent except for the crackle of a small fire burning in the carved stone hearth.

""I should pack my locker, Mr. Moretti,"" I said quietly, keeping my hands folded in my lap.

Gabriel stopped writing, capped his fountain pen, and looked up at me.

""Why would you do that?""

""Because the other employees will never work with me after today,"" I explained, staring at the brass desk lamp.

""They will be terrified of me, or they will hate me for having Evelyn arrested.""

""They will do their jobs, and they will treat you with respect,"" Gabriel stated simply.

""That is not how people work, sir,"" I whispered, shaking my head.

""When someone at the bottom of the ladder brings down someone at the top, the rest of the ladder hates the person who rocked it.""

A faint, appreciative glimmer appeared in Gabriel’s dark eyes.

""You understand organizational dynamics better than most executives I employ.""

""I didn't always clean houses,"" I said, a bitter edge slipping into my voice before I could stop it.

""I know,"" Gabriel replied, opening a thin manila folder on his desk.

My heart jumped into my throat.

""You have my background check?""

""I run background checks on everyone who breathes air inside my house,"" he said calmly, turning a page.

""Sophie Hayes. Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management from Northwestern University. Minor in Corporate Accounting.""

He read through the lines with practiced ease.

""Former associate events coordinator for the Drake Hotel. Managed high-profile galas, inventory reconciliation, and private vendor accounts.""

He closed the folder and rested his elbows on the polished wood.

""Then, eighteen months ago, you vanished from the industry after your family’s boutique catering firm collapsed under two hundred thousand dollars of debt.""

The reminder hit me like cold water, reopening wounds that had never truly healed.

""My mother got sick, and the firm couldn't handle the medical expenses while managing our wholesale accounts,"" I murmured.

""That wasn't the only reason the firm collapsed, was it?"" Gabriel asked softly.

I clenched my fists in my lap, feeling my fingernails dig into my palms.

""No.""

Before I could elaborate, the study door opened with a brief knock, and Marcus Reed walked into the room.

He carried a clear plastic evidence bag containing Evelyn Cross’s gold-trimmed smartphone.

""The technicians finished pulling the encrypted caches, boss,"" Marcus said, placing the bag on Gabriel’s blotter.

""Did she have an outside buyer for the bracelet?"" Gabriel asked.

""No,"" Marcus replied, his jaw tightening.

""She didn't steal the bracelet to sell it. She was paid a flat fifty thousand dollars through an offshore shell company to plant it on Sophie.""

My breath caught in my throat so sharply that my chest physically ached.

""What?"" I gasped.

""Someone paid fifty thousand dollars just to get me arrested for theft?""

Marcus glanced at me with something resembling pity in his hard eyes.

""The burner messages were deleted, but the recovery tool pulled the originating IP address and bank routing numbers.""

Marcus pulled a printed sheet of paper from his pocket and laid it beside the phone.

""The payment originated from Vance Development Group,"" Marcus said.

The name fell into the quiet room like a live grenade.

My vision blurred, and the room seemed to tilt beneath my feet as the ghost I had been running from for two years stepped directly into the room.

Daniel Vance.

My former fiancé.

The man who had promised to love me, who had taken control of my family firm's credit lines, and who had dumped me via text message three days after my mother’s funeral.

""Daniel,"" I whispered, the name tasting like ash on my tongue.

Gabriel leaned forward, his eyes locking onto mine with the intensity of a predator tracking scent in the snow.

May you like

""Who is Daniel Vance to you, Sophie?"" Gabriel asked, his voice dead and dangerous.

""He is the man who ruined my life,"" I whispered.
