Chapter 13 - THE FALLEN MISTRESS: WHEN THE CONQUEROR MEETS HER MATCH

The heavy double doors of the boardroom clicked open a moment later.

A woman stepped into the room, her footsteps hesitant and uneven against the polished concrete floor.

It was Vanessa.

Or at least, what was left of her.

The woman who had once stood proudly in my kitchen drinking imported Pinot Noir while framing an eight-year-old child for a ripped designer dress now looked like a ghost of her former self.

Her hair was pulled back into a messy, unwashed ponytail, her expensive designer clothes were replaced by a faded thrift-store trench coat, and her eyes were ringed with dark, bruised circles of absolute exhaustion and despair.

She stopped midway across the room, staring at me sitting at the head of the mahogany table like a queen presiding over her court.

“Elena,” Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking and trembling as she gripped the straps of her worn-out faux-leather handbag.

I didn't stand up.

I didn't offer her a seat.

I simply rested my hands flat against the glass surface of the table and looked at her with cold, unblinking detachment.

“Vanessa,” I replied quietly. “You’re a long way from my suburban kitchen.”

Vanessa swallowed hard, taking a trembling step forward before stopping as Noah shifted slightly near the doorway, his massive frame blocking any potential path toward me.

“I... I need help,” Vanessa choked out, tears instantly spilling over her lower eyelids and cutting tracks through her bare, unpowdered face. “They... they froze my accounts. My apartment lease was terminated. The federal marshals seized my car, my clothes, my jewelry... everything Derek bought me with the company funds, they took it all.”

A quiet, humorless smile touched the corners of my lips.

“Of course they did, Vanessa,” I said smoothly. “Stolen property purchased with embezzled corporate funds tends to belong to the rightful owners. In this case, that’s Halcyon Dynamics—which happens to be the company I now run.”

Vanessa dropped to her knees right there on the polished concrete floor, letting out a wretched, sobbing gasp as she pressed her palms flat against the ground.

“Please!” she wept, her voice echoing off the walnut paneling. “Drop the federal conspiracy charges against me! Tell your brother David to withdraw the asset forfeiture warrants! I didn't know he was married when we started! He lied to me! He told me he was getting a divorce!”

I watched her groveling on the floor—the exact same woman who had smirked while telling my daughter she didn't belong in her own home, the same woman who had sliced a designer dress with small scissors just to orchestrate a cruel frame-up.

“You knew he was married, Vanessa,” I said, my voice dropping an octave, becoming as cold and hard as frozen steel. “You didn't care. In fact, you enjoyed playing the mistress, playing the game of psychological dominance, thinking you could walk into my house and bully a child into silence.”

I stood up slowly from my chair, walking around the end of the long glass table until I stood right over her, looking down into her tear-streaked face.

“You wanted power, Vanessa,” I whispered, leaning in close. “You wanted the luxury, the status, the designer clothes, and the rich man’s arm candy lifestyle without doing a single day of honest work to earn it. Well, you got your wish. You’re living the high life now. Enjoy the federal investigation.”

Vanessa looked up at me, her eyes wide with terror and utter hopelessness, realizing that there was no mercy to be found in the woman she had tried to destroy.

“Get her out of my building,” I commanded quietly, stepping back and turning my back on her.

Before Vanessa could utter another plea, Noah’s heavy hands gently but firmly gripped her by the arms, lifting her effortlessly off the floor and guiding her backward toward the double doors.

“Come along, Ms. Vance,” Noah said in his deep, rumbling voice. “Federal probation officers are waiting downstairs to take your formal statement.”

The heavy doors swung shut, cutting off her muffled sobbing, and once again, absolute, pristine silence settled over the boardroom.
