Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Trap

By four o'clock in the morning, the rain had turned into a thick, clinging fog over the harbor.

Sophia sat in Dante's private security suite beneath the mansion.

Banks of high-definition monitors illuminated the room in a cold blue glow.

Marcus Vance stood behind a console, typing rapidly with sweat beading on his forehead.

"I've recovered three fragments from the corrupted sectors," Vance said, his voice strained.

"The purge wasn't initiated from an outside terminal."

"It was executed from the auxiliary console inside the study."

Sophia leaned closer to the screen.

"The study on the second floor?"

"That room was supposed to be locked during the entire evening," Sophia said.

"It was," Dante said, standing behind her chair with his arms folded across his chest.

"The only people with biometric access to that room are myself, Vance, and my late father."

A heavy chill descended upon the room.

Sophia looked at Vance, whose fingers froze over the keyboard.

"Someone used an archived keycard," Vance whispered.

"A duplicate of your father’s override card."

"And who had access to my father's personal estate vault after his funeral?" Dante asked, his voice dangerously low.

"Julian Hale was the co-executor of the estate," Sophia realized aloud, her mind piecing together the timeline.

"When your father died, Julian spent three weeks inventorying the private study in the harbor house."

"He kept a copy of the master clearance."

"Look at monitor four," Sophia suddenly pointed.

On the screen, a low-resolution timestamp showed 10:48 PM.

The service corridor leading toward the wine cellar.

A figure in a dark tailored tuxedo walked past the frame.

He was carrying a leather portfolio under his arm.

"Freeze that frame," Dante ordered.

Vance hit a key.

The image sharpened.

The man’s face was turned away from the camera, but on his left lapel was a silver pin shaped like an anchor wrapped in ivy.

"The Hale family crest," Sophia whispered.

"It wasn't Celeste who slipped into the study."

"Celeste was the distraction in the center of the ballroom."

"She screamed about her necklace precisely when Julian was transferring the files out of the archive."

"They used Celeste’s diamond to force an emergency lockdown," Dante said, his jaw tightening into a ridge of stone.

"During a security lockdown, all perimeter doors seal, but the internal freight elevator remains open for emergency personnel."

"Julian walked right down to the garage with my father’s original shipping manifests."

Sophia turned to look at Dante.

"What was in those manifests that is worth committing treason and grand larceny for?"

Dante walked over to a steel cabinet on the wall, entered a six-digit code, and pulled out an antique brass key.

"Five years ago, before your father disappeared, he uncovered a hidden ledger."

"A system of off-the-books container ships moving between South America and private ports owned by the Laurent family."

"Those ships weren't carrying commercial freight."

"They were laundering untraceable rough diamonds from sanctioned conflict zones."

"My father was going to bring the evidence to the federal maritime commission."

"Three days before the meeting, your father's car was found near the docks with the engine running."

"Two weeks later, my father suffered a sudden, fatal stroke."

Sophia felt her breath hitch.

"They killed them both."

"Yes," Dante said, his voice stripped of all mercy.

"And tonight, Julian Hale used you to finish what he started five years ago."

"He thought that by putting the Bennett name back on a police blotter, he could discredit any old documents your father left behind."

"If the public believes the Bennett family are common thieves, any leak regarding the Laurent diamond routes looks like a bitter daughter's fabricated revenge."

Sophia looked down at her hands.

The black-and-white uniform felt heavy, suffocating.

She had spent five years hiding in the shadows, washing dishes, scrubing floors, and taking abuse from spoiled heiresses just to buy another month of oxygen for her mother.

All while the men who murdered her father were sipping fifty-year-old cognac in ballrooms built on stolen blood.

"I don't want to hide anymore," Sophia said, looking directly into Dante's eyes.

Her voice was no longer that of a frightened servant.

It was cold, steady, and sharp as broken glass.

"Good," Dante replied, the faintest trace of an approving smile touching the corner of his lips.

"Because tomorrow night, Julian Hale is hosting a charity dinner at the Laurent country club."

"He expects me to be at home, managing a PR disaster and answering questions from insurance investigators."

"Instead, we are going to walk through his front door."

"Together."

"What do you want me to do?" Sophia asked.

May you like

Dante walked toward the door of the security room.

"I want you to make Victoria Hale wish she had never laid a hand on you."
