Chapter 8 - The Hostile Boardroom

The twentieth floor of the Maritime Commerce Building smelled of floor wax, polished cedar, and corporate betrayal.

By seven-thirty in the morning, fifteen board members sat around the sixty-foot mahogany conference table.

Every man and woman in the room controlled hundreds of millions of dollars in maritime shipping and international logistics.

Julian Hale sat at the head of the table, his sling conspicuously displayed over his gray wool suit.

Victoria sat directly behind him in the gallery chairs, wearing a black mourning-style dress and oversized dark glasses.

On the table in front of Julian lay a thick stack of printed motions.

"The agenda is straightforward, ladies and gentlemen," Julian said, his voice echoing with practiced grief and moral authority.

"Dante Moretti has brought violence and disgrace to this consortium."

"Last night at the country club, two men lost their lives because Moretti brought an armed militia into a private dining hall."

"Furthermore, he is harboring Sophia Bennett, the primary suspect in the Laurent diamond grand larceny case."

"We cannot allow a reckless thirty-year-old narcissist to sink an industry that feeds forty thousand dockworkers."

An older board member, Arthur Vance, cleared his throat.

"Julian, does Moretti know this vote was pushed up by two hours?"

Julian checked his gold Patek Philippe watch.

"Mr. Moretti was notified by registered courier forty-five minutes ago."

"If he fails to appear by eight o'clock, his seat is declared vacant by statutory default."

Victoria smiled from the back row, a cruel, satisfied smirk curving her lips.

"It is now seven fifty-eight," Julian announced, raising his hand.

"I move to call the vote to revoke the Moretti Maritime charter."

"Second," three voices chimed in immediately.

"All in favor—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom didn't open.

They slammed open so hard that the bronze handles gouged the drywall.

Dante Moretti walked through the entrance.

He wore a charcoal three-piece suit cut with razor-sharp precision, concealing every trace of last night’s injuries.

Behind him walked Sophia Bennett.

She wore a tailored ivory pantsuit with a black silk shirt beneath, her long dark hair falling straight past her shoulders like polished obsidian.

She carried a black leather briefcase with a titanium lock clasp.

The boardroom became so quiet that the hum of the air conditioner sounded like a jet engine.

Julian's hand remained frozen in mid-air.

Victoria’s smirk died on her face.

"You're late, Dante," Julian said, trying to recover his composure.

"A vote is already on the floor."

"The vote is canceled, Julian," Dante said, pulling back the heavy leather chair at the foot of the table opposite Julian.

He did not sit down.

He pulled the chair out for Sophia.

Sophia took the seat, sat up straight, and laid her hands flat on the mahogany surface.

She looked Julian directly in his cold, blue eyes.

"Who authorized this woman to sit at an executive board table?" Victoria snapped from the back.

"Security, remove her!"

Nobody moved.

Two armed officers from the Massachusetts State Police entered the room behind Dante, followed by a tall woman carrying an official federal badge.

"Inspector Sarah Chen, Federal Maritime Fraud Task Force," the woman announced, stepping into the light.

"This meeting is officially being monitored under a federal oversight warrant."

Julian’s face twitched.

"On what possible grounds?"

Sophia unlocked the titanium briefcase with a clean metallic click.

She pulled out three thick dossiers bound in red leather and slid them across the table toward Arthur Vance and the other senior board members.

"On the grounds of treason, fraud, and commercial conspiracy," Sophia said, her voice commanding the entire room without raising its tone.

"Inside those folders are the digital scans of the Leviathan Ledger."

"Recovered from the personal safe of my late father, David Bennett."

Arthur Vance opened the first file, his glasses slipping down his nose as his eyes scanned the printed manifests.

"My God..." Arthur whispered.

"These are container registries for the Port of Santos in Brazil."

"Unregistered shipments passing through Terminal Four without customs declarations."

"Terminal Four is operated exclusively by the Hale Logistics Group," Sophia stated, pointing her finger directly at Julian.

"For seven years, Julian Hale, Marcus Laurent, and my uncle, Robert Bennett, used shell corporations to import uncertified diamonds."

"They laundered the proceeds through the Laurent family’s private jewelry design laboratories."

"That is complete fabrication!" Julian roared, slamming his uninjured hand onto the table.

"Robert Bennett died four years ago in the Caribbean!"

"Did he?" Dante asked smoothly.

Dante nodded toward Inspector Chen.

The inspector pulled a tablet from her bag and tapped the screen, transmitting an image to the eighty-inch display screen on the boardroom wall.

The screen showed a live satellite tracking feed of a private villa outside San José, Costa Rica.

A man with graying hair and a thick beard was sitting on the terrace, drinking coffee while reading an American newspaper.

Sophia felt a knife twist in her stomach as she looked at her uncle’s face.

He looked healthy.

He looked rich.

He looked completely unbothered by the fact that he had left his brother to drown in the freezing harbor so he could live in a paradise paid for with blood.

"Robert Bennett was taken into custody by Costa Rican federal police two hours ago," Inspector Chen said.

"He is currently boarding an extradition flight to Boston."

"And he has already signed a thirty-page proffer agreement naming Julian Hale as the architect of the entire enterprise."

Victoria let out a strangled, ragged gasp from the back row.

The board members began sliding away from Julian as though he carried a contagious plague.

Julian looked around the table, his eyes wild and desperate.

"This is a setup!" Julian shouted.

"Arthur, you've known me for thirty years!"

Arthur Vance closed the folder and pushed it back across the table with disgust.

"Julian, step away from that chair."

Dante walked slowly down the length of the table until he stood right beside Julian.

He leaned down, placing both hands on the mahogany surface, his face six inches from Julian’s ear.

"You tried to frame a girl whose family gave their lives for your greed," Dante whispered.

"You tried to kill her in a public dining hall."

"And now, you are going to spend the rest of your pathetic life watching me dismantle everything your father built."

Inspector Chen stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt.

"Julian Hale, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, maritime conspiracy, and accessory to murder."

As the cold steel clicked around Julian’s wrists, Victoria lunged toward the table, screaming obscenities at Sophia.

"You ruined us!" Victoria shrieked.

"You dirty little maid, you ruined my family!"

Sophia didn't flinch.

She didn't look away.

"You ruined yourselves, Victoria," Sophia said, standing up and looking down at the hysterical heiress.

"My father died with nothing in his pockets except his honor."

"Your father has millions, and he will die in an eight-by-ten concrete cage."

The police hauled Julian and Victoria out of the boardroom, their screams fading down the marble corridor until the heavy doors swung shut.

The remaining board members sat in stunned, terrified silence.

Dante turned to the room, his voice returning to its normal, commanding tone.

May you like

"Now," Dante said, adjusting his cuffs.

"Shall we proceed with the actual agenda?"
