Chapter 7 - THE GHOST’S TESTIMONY

Inside the green metal box lay no diamonds, no stacks of illicit mafia cash, and no bearer bonds.

Resting at the very top was a thick, handwritten leather journal, along with several micro-cassette tapes and a stack of black-and-white surveillance photographs.

Adrian picked up the top photograph with fingers that remained steady only through sheer, monstrous discipline.

The picture had been taken seven years ago with a long-range telephoto lens outside a private medical clinic on the north side of the river.

The image showed Victoria Hale—seven years younger, her hair dyed blonde instead of dark auburn—shaking hands with an older man in a white doctor’s coat.

Behind them, parked along the curb, was the exact make and model of the town car Sarah Moretti had been driving the night her brakes inexplicably failed on the cliff highway.

Adrian’s heart turned to lead as he set the photograph aside and picked up the first micro-cassette tape, labeled in Sarah’s delicate, slanted handwriting: The Truth Before They Silence Me.

Adrian’s head of security, a towering man named Marco who had served the family for two decades, wordlessly stepped forward and produced a portable cassette player from his coat pocket.

Adrian slipped the tiny tape into the player and pressed down on the worn plastic button.

A faint hiss of tape static filled the silence of Room 214, followed by the sound of a woman taking a shaky, terrified breath.

"Adrian... if you are listening to this, then the accident they planned for me succeeded."

The sound of his dead wife’s voice after seven long years struck Adrian like a physical blow, stripping every shred of color from his weathered face.

"I found out about the clinic offshore," the tape continued, Sarah’s voice trembling with unmistakable terror. "I found out where the cartel funds were really going, and I found out who was feeding information to the prosecutor’s office to bring you down."

A pause on the tape, accompanied by the distant sound of Sarah weeping softly.

"It wasn’t your rival families, Adrian. It was the Hale family. They have been laundering through your accounts for three years, and Victoria Hale has been orchestrating every leak."

Victoria raised her head from the floor, her eyes bloodshot, her lips trembling violently.

"Adrian, she was paranoid... she was hallucinating because of her illness, you can't believe a ghost over someone who has stood by you!"

"She approached my doctor," Sarah’s voice cut through Victoria's frantic protests with the chill of an open grave. "She switched my daily medication with beta-blockers to induce severe dizziness and disorientation behind the wheel. I kept the original pharmaceutical bottles and the lab toxicology reports inside this very box."

Adrian reached deeper into the green box and pulled out two amber prescription vials, their pharmacy labels bearing dates that preceded Sarah’s fatal plunge off the ocean cliff by less than a week.

The paper inside the box also contained a sworn, notarized affidavit signed by an independent toxicologist—a document Sarah had hidden away just forty-eight hours before she died.

She had known she was marked for death, but she had lacked the time to flee; instead, she had secured her evidence where only her beloved daughter would eventually help locate it.

Adrian pressed the stop button on the cassette player, the sudden silence inside Room 214 ringing louder than a scream.

He turned around slowly, towering over Victoria where she wept against the stained baseboard.

"You didn't just target my family's business," Adrian whispered, the terrifying stillness of his voice making Marco and his guards take an instinctive step back.

"You stole seven years of my daughter's life with her mother. You made me believe I failed to protect her from an unfortunate mechanical accident."

Victoria scrambled backward on her knees, her hands clawing desperately at the carpet.

"I loved you, Adrian! I did what I had to do so we could be together, so you wouldn't be dragged down by a woman who was too weak to handle your empire!"

Adrian looked at her with pure, unadulterated revulsion, the illusion of her beauty wiped away forever.

"You never loved me, Victoria. You wanted the throne, you wanted the keys to the Moretti vault, and you wanted to destroy my daughter before she grew old enough to remember."

He turned his back on her, walking toward the shattered doorway without looking down.

"Marco."

"Yes, boss?"

"Take her to the cellar at the warehouse by the docks. Nobody speaks to her, nobody feeds her, and nobody lets her sleep until I arrive to oversee the interrogation personally."
