Chapter 9 - THE BONE IN THE WALLS

Accepting Adrian’s offer meant stepping out of the shadows of the estate and into the crosshairs of an unfolding civil war within the Moretti syndicate.
By afternoon, I had moved my few personal belongings out of the cramped servant quarters and into a spacious, light-filled suite adjacent to Lily’s bedroom on the second floor.
The little girl was sitting on the window seat of her room, hugging an old velvet rabbit tightly against her chest, watching the security guards patrol the grounds below.
When I knocked gently on her open door, she looked up, her red-rimmed eyes widening with visible relief.
"You didn't leave like the other maids do," Lily said softly, her voice small and fragile.
I walked in, sitting down on the edge of the window seat beside her, making sure not to crowd her space.
"I told your father I would stay, Lily. And I keep my promises."
Lily looked down at her hands, tracing the seams of her velvet rabbit.
"Victoria told me that if I ever talked about the green box, Daddy would send me away to an island where no one speaks English."
A surge of fierce, protective anger ignited in my chest, but I kept my voice perfectly calm and soothing.
"Victoria is gone, sweetheart. She will never come back here, and your father would tear the whole world down before he let anyone take you away."
Lily leaned her head against my arm, letting out a heavy, shuddering sigh that a ten-year-old child should never have to carry.
Later that evening, after Lily had finally fallen into a peaceful, dreamless sleep, I decided to inspect the master wing to inventory the personal items Victoria had left behind.
Adrian had ordered her belongings packed into industrial storage crates to be burned, but as estate administrator, I needed to ensure no sensitive documents or weapons remained hidden in the walls.
I walked into Victoria’s dressing room, a decadent space lined with mirrored vanity tables, velvet jewelry displays, and custom mahogany cabinetry.
As I began clearing out the drawers, my fingers caught on something unusual at the back of the walk-in closet: the skirting board along the floor was misaligned by less than a quarter of an inch.
My grandfather’s voice echoed in the back of my mind: When the wood doesn't sit flush with the grain, someone forced it into place.
I knelt down, sliding my fingernails behind the baseboard, pulling gently until the magnetic latch released with a soft click.
Behind the false wood panel was a narrow, hollow cavity between the wall studs.
Inside was a modern black leather briefcase, equipped with a digital biometric thumbprint scanner.
Sitting beside the briefcase was a burner phone that suddenly began to vibrate against the bare wall framing.
The screen lit up in the dim closet, flashing an incoming message from a contact saved only as: THE ARCHITECT.
My heart pounded in my throat as I watched the preview text appear across the screen:
The shipment clears the docks at 0200. Does Moretti suspect our connection yet? If he does, initiate protocol B and take the girl.
A cold dread washed over me like ice water.
Victoria had not been acting alone.
She was simply the inside agent for a much larger, coordinated strike designed to decapitate the Moretti leadership from within.
May you like
And their secondary target was asleep in the room right next to mine.
I grabbed the burner phone, snatched the locked briefcase from the hidden cavity, and ran down the west corridor toward Adrian’s office as fast as my feet could carry me.
