Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Setup

The west corridor of the Vale estate was silent, carpeted in deep burgundy wool that swallowed every footstep.

Antique oil paintings of maritime wars and medieval sieges lined the wood-paneled walls under dim, recessed lighting.

Adrien moved like a phantom through the shadows, guiding Elena by the small of her back toward an arched library door.

The door was cracked open a fraction of an inch, spilling a narrow sliver of yellow light onto the carpet.

Voices drifted through the gap.

They were hushed, hurried, and thick with terror.

“You swore to me she would stay in the car, Daniel!” Vanessa’s voice hissed from inside the library.

“How was I supposed to know Vale would walk out into the rain to fetch her?” Daniel whispered back defensively.

“Vale never leaves the ballroom!”

“He doesn’t even greet the governor at the door!”

“Because he knows!” Vanessa snapped.

“He’s watching you, Daniel!”

“If that woman spends another twenty minutes talking to him, he’s going to connect the dots!”

Outside the door, Elena pressed her hand against the cold wood, her knuckles turning bone white.

Adrien stood right behind her, his breath warm against her hair, his presence an immovable wall of dark authority.

“She doesn't know anything,” Daniel argued, his voice trembling with frantic rationalization.

“Elena spends her entire life gluing old paper together in a dusty basement.”

“She doesn't understand cross-border wire transfers or offshore shell companies.”

“She doesn't have to understand it, you moron!” Vanessa spat.

“Her signature is on every single charter for Heritage Foliant LLC!”

Elena’s heart slammed violently against her ribs.

Heritage Foliant was the name of her small restoration studio.

It was the independent business her grandfather had founded fifty years ago, the modest shop she had poured her life’s savings into keeping alive.

“The accounts in the Cayman Islands and Cyprus are all tied to her business tax identification number,” Vanessa continued, paper shuffling loudly inside the room.

“Fourteen million dollars of Adrien Vale’s logistics capital moved through her studio’s corporate accounts over the last eighteen months.”

“When Vale’s enforcers track that missing money, the paper trail stops dead at Elena’s workbench.”

“The federal prosecutors will think she’s the mastermind, and Vale’s men will put a bullet in her head before she ever reaches a courtroom!”

Elena felt the room spin beneath her feet.

The air seemed to turn to poison in her throat.

Her eight-year marriage had not simply deteriorated into indifference.

It had been calculated, engineered, and turned into an execution chamber.

Daniel hadn't just stopped loving her; he had systematically drafted her death warrant to save himself and his mistress.

“We have forty-eight hours,” Daniel whispered, his voice shaking with desperate greed.

“The final wire clearings hit the Zurich private accounts on Friday morning.”

“Once the money settles in Switzerland, you and I board the flight from Montreal.”

“Elena will be left holding the corporate debt and the audit notices.”

“By the time Vale figures out we’re gone, she’ll be answering questions for the federal grand jury.”

“And if Vale’s syndicate gets to her before the feds do?” Vanessa asked, a cold cruelty in her tone.

Inside the room, there was a second of dead silence.

Then Daniel spoke the words that severed the last thread of Elena’s humanity.

“Then she solves our problem permanently.”

“A dead defendant can’t testify about who forged her name on the bank authorizations.”

Elena swayed slightly, her breath catching in a silent, agonizing gasp.

Before she could stumble, a strong, heavy hand gripped her shoulder, steadying her with absolute firmness.

She looked up into Adrien Vale’s face.

The calm amusement from earlier was completely gone.

His dark eyes had turned into twin abysses of predatory rage.

He did not look like an investor or a polite billionaire anymore.

He looked like the ruthless syndicate sovereign whose name made grown men weep in dark alleys.

Adrien reached past Elena and placed his palm against the heavy oak door.

He did not knock.

He shoved it open with terrifying force.

The heavy brass handles slammed against the interior wall with the sound of a gunshot.

Daniel and Vanessa leaped apart like guilty thieves caught in a spotlight.

Papers scattered across the antique leather desk.

Vanessa gasped, clutching the manila folder to her chest, her face draining of color.

Daniel turned toward the door, his mouth opening to stutter an excuse.

Then he saw Elena standing in the doorway.

And behind her, stepping into the room like a looming shadow of death, was Adrien Vale.

“E-Elena...” Daniel whispered, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic pitch.

Elena stepped into the library, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.

She did not scream.

She did not cry.

The grief that had weighed on her chest all evening had burned away, leaving behind a cold, crystalline diamond of absolute hatred.

“Fourteen million dollars, Daniel?” Elena asked, her voice deadly quiet.

“You priced my life at fourteen million dollars?”

Daniel stepped backward until his spine hit the mahogany bookshelves, knocking a bronze globe off its pedestal.

“Elena... listen to me... it’s not what you think...”

“Don't insult what little intelligence you have left by lying to her,” Adrien said, closing the door behind him with a soft, final click.

Marcus Reed materialized from the outer corridor, slipping into the room and locking the deadbolt with a chilling metallic snap.

Adrien walked slowly toward the desk, his eyes locked onto Daniel like a hawk pinning a field mouse.

“You stole from my logistics line, Carter,” Adrien whispered.

“That was your first fatal mistake.”

May you like

“You used a woman who built you from nothing as your human shield.”

“That was the mistake that ensures you will never see the city skyline again.”
