Chapter 8 - The Confession of Vanessa Drake

By four-thirty in the morning, the basement holding suites beneath Adrien’s private estate were freezing and sterile.

Concrete walls, stripped of all comfort, amplified the steady drip of condensation from overhead pipes.

Vanessa Drake sat on a bolted metal chair, her glamorous scarlet gown torn at the shoulder, her mascara smeared across her pale, hollow cheeks.

Across the narrow steel table sat Daniel Carter, his head buried in his hands, trembling so violently his teeth clicked together.

The heavy steel door swung open, and Elena walked into the room.

She was flanked by Adrien Vale, who wore a fresh dark charcoal suit and carried a slim leather dossier.

Vanessa looked up, her bloodshot eyes widening in disbelief when she saw Elena carrying a leather folder under her arm.

“Elena... please,” Daniel sobbed, looking up with reddened, swollen eyes.

“Tell him to let us go... I made a mistake, Elena, I swear to God I lost my mind!”

Elena did not even acknowledge his presence.

She walked straight to the table, pulled out a chair opposite Vanessa, and sat down with calm, deliberate grace.

She laid the mahogany box containing the antique seal on the metal surface.

“You look cold, Miss Drake,” Elena said quietly.

Vanessa swallowed hard, pulling the torn fabric of her dress over her collarbone.

“You think you’ve won, don't you?” Vanessa whispered, her voice venomous despite her terror.

“You think walking behind Adrien Vale makes you untouchable?”

“My father is Marcus Drake.”

“He has lunch with federal judges every Tuesday.”

“You and Vale are holding us unlawfully, and when the FBI traces Daniel’s phone—”

“Daniel’s phone was crushed and thrown into the harbor two hours ago, Miss Drake,” Adrien interrupted, leaning against the doorframe with folded arms.

“And as far as the federal authorities are concerned, you and Carter boarded a private charter to Panama at midnight.”

“The flight manifests were officially logged thirty minutes ago.”

“If your bodies were discovered in the river tomorrow, nobody would look for you in this city.”

Vanessa’s breath hitched in her throat, the last remnants of her arrogance shattering into absolute dread.

Elena leaned forward, opening the leather dossier on the table.

“Let’s talk about my life, Vanessa,” Elena said, her hazel eyes piercing through the trembling lawyer.

“You told Daniel that using my grandfather’s business was a clean way to route the money.”

“You told him that I would merely face a grand jury inquiry.”

Elena flipped a page, exposing a photocopy of an insurance policy bearing Daniel’s signature from three weeks ago.

“Did Daniel tell you about this?” Elena asked, sliding the document across the steel table.

Vanessa’s eyes flicked down to the paper.

It was an umbrella supplemental life insurance policy taken out on Elena Carter through an offshore brokerage.

The payout was four million dollars.

The cause-of-death clause specifically covered accidental drowning or homicide during an unprovoked burglary.

Vanessa’s mouth fell open, her gaze darting toward Daniel in sheer horror.

“Daniel?” Vanessa whispered.

Daniel buried his face deeper into his hands, whimpering like a wounded dog.

“He didn't tell you, did he?” Elena asked, her voice dangerously soft.

“Daniel was never going to fly to Switzerland with you, Vanessa.”

“He wasn't going to share the fourteen million with you or build a new life in Europe.”

“He was planning to eliminate me to trigger the insurance payout, and then he was going to leak your forged authorizations to Adrien Vale’s enforcers.”

“You were his second sacrificial lamb.”

“You were the legal architect he was going to blame for my death.”

Vanessa lunged across the table, grabbing the front of Daniel’s tuxedo shirt and screaming into his face.

“You filthy, lying bastard!” she shrieked, clawing at his cheeks until red welts appeared.

“I gave you the routing codes!”

“I drafted the shell companies using my father’s private accounts!”

“You were going to let them kill me?!”

Daniel pulled away, cowering against the back of his chair and shielding his face with his arms.

“Vanessa, stop! She’s trying to turn us against each other!” Daniel wailed.

Adrien gestured with two fingers, and Marcus Reed stepped forward, pulling Vanessa back into her chair by her shoulders.

“Sit down, Miss Drake,” Adrien commanded smoothly.

Vanessa collapsed back against the steel chair, her chest heaving, tears streaming down her ruined makeup.

“What do you want from me?” Vanessa sobbed, looking from Elena to Adrien.

“Tell me what to do... just don't leave me with him!”

Elena tapped her fingers against the leather folder.

“You will write a comprehensive, notarized deposition detailing every bank account, every phone call, and every meeting between your father and Senator Vance.”

“You will admit that Daniel Carter forged my signature under your legal guidance.”

“And you will surrender the private decryption keys for your father’s maritime escrow shell accounts.”

Vanessa looked up, her lower lip trembling.

“If I do that, my father will be ruined... he’ll face twenty years in federal prison.”

“If you don't do that,” Adrien whispered, his eyes narrowing into cold slits, “you will remain in this room permanently.”

“Choose, Vanessa.”

“Your father’s career, or your own survival.”

Vanessa looked at Daniel, whose cowardice was now laid bare in all its putrid detail.

She looked at Elena, whose quiet strength was backed by the most lethal man in the hemisphere.

“Give me a pen,” Vanessa whispered.

“I’ll tell you everything.”
