Chapter 10 - The Ashes of an Empire

By midnight, the Palmer House ballroom had been completely cleared.

The federal transport vans idling in the subterranean garage had taken Salvatore Moretti and his personal enforcers away to a secure, undisclosed black-site facility in rural Wisconsin, where they would live out their remaining years in solitary confinement without ever seeing another sunrise.

Vanessa Bellini had been placed in a holding room in the east wing of the Moretti estate, her assets frozen, her passport confiscated, and her father’s shipping empire dismantled by federal marshals acting on the encrypted data keys Luca had handed over at ten o’clock.

The storm outside had finally broken, leaving the Chicago streets washed clean under a cold, brilliant canopy of autumn stars.

I sat in the front seat of Luca’s private study on the fourth floor, sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea that Mrs. Carter had personally brewed for me.

My right hand was resting on a soft velvet cushion, wrapped in fresh, clean bandages applied by Dr. Bennett himself.

The door opened quietly, and Luca walked in.

He had removed his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the powerful, corded muscles of his forearms.

He looked tired—not with the weakness of exhaustion, but with the profound, settling weight of a man who had finally laid down a fifty-year-old burden.

He walked over to the desk, poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy crystal glass, and sat down in the leather chair opposite me.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

The only sound was the crackle of the wood fire burning in the marble hearth.

“How is your hand, Nora?” Luca asked softly, breaking the silence.

“It aches,” I answered honestly, offering a small, tired smile.

“Doctor Bennett says the skin will heal in a few weeks, but there might be a faint scar.”

Luca looked down at my bandaged hand, his gray eyes darkening with a flicker of old guilt.

“A scar you earned because you were trapped in my house while my own blood tried to tear it apart.”

“I was just doing my job, Mr. Moretti,” I said quietly.

“No,” Luca corrected, looking straight into my eyes.

“You were doing what everyone else in this city was too cowardly to do.”

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box.

He placed it on the coffee table between us and pushed it gently toward me with his index finger.

I looked down at the box, then up at him, my eyebrows drawing together in confusion.

“What is this?”

“Open it,” Luca said simply.

With my left hand, I lifted the velvet lid.

Inside rested a heavy, antique gold key on a delicate platinum chain.

It wasn't a jewelry key.

It was the master security key to the east wing penthouse of the estate—the private sanctuary where no servant, no capo, and no outsider had ever been allowed to reside.

“What does this mean?” I whispered, my heart skipping a beat against my ribs.

“It means the position of head housekeeper is officially vacant,” Luca said, his voice steady, warm, and entirely serious.

“And the position of estate administrator—with full executive control over the household staff, the library, and the security access codes—is currently open.”

“You want me to run the estate?” I asked, my breath catching in my throat.

“I want you to stay here, Nora,” Luca leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his gaze holding mine with absolute certainty.

“Not as a servant.”

“Not as a witness.”

“As my partner in rebuilding everything that was broken.”

He reached out, his large, warm hand gently covering my bandaged fingers without applying any pressure, letting me feel the absolute steadiness of his touch.

“Your sister Clara has been transferred to the private recovery wing at Northwestern Hospital under my personal medical team,” Luca continued softly.

“She has her own suite, the best oncologists in the country, and all the time in the world to get better.”

“And you?”

“You never have to lift a heavy tray, pour another glass of wine for ungrateful guests, or hide your hands in an apron pocket again.”

Tears welled up in my eyes, spilling over my lashes and tracking down my cheeks, but this time, there was no fear in them.

Only a profound, overwhelming relief.

I looked at the man who ruled the Chicago underworld—the ruthless syndicate boss who had burned his own father’s empire to the ground to protect an ordinary girl from a housing project.

I slowly reached up with my left hand, picked up the platinum chain from the velvet box, and let him fasten it around my neck.

The gold key rested warm against my collarbone, right over the hidden hem where the microSD card had saved us both.

“Thank you, Luca,” I whispered, using his first name for the very first time.

Luca smiled—a rare, genuine, breathtaking smile that transformed the hardened mafia boss into a man who had finally found home.

“Thank you for saving my life, Nora.”

“Now finish your tea.”
