Chapter 11 - The Shadow of the Federal Indictment

The morning sun broke over Lake Michigan like a razor edge of cold gold, cutting through the frosty windowpanes of the executive suite on the fourth floor.

I woke up to the quiet, rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner and the faint, comforting aroma of roasted chicory and fresh brioche drifting up from the private kitchen.

For the first time in nine months, my shoulders didn't ache with the dread of the morning alarm.

I sat up slowly, pulling the soft gray cashmere blanket over my legs, and looked down at my right hand.

The swelling had gone down significantly under Dr. Bennett's potent antibiotics, leaving a pale, web-like pattern of pink scar tissue across my palm—a permanent map of the night my life changed forever.

I reached up with my left hand and touched the heavy gold key resting against my collarbone on its platinum chain.

It was real.

The old regime was gone.

Salvatore Moretti was locked away in a federal black site in Wisconsin, Vanessa Bellini was isolated in the east wing waiting for her extradition papers, and the capos who once ruled with blood and iron now answered directly to Luca.

The heavy oak door clicked open softly.

Luca stepped into the room carrying a silver tray with two cups of black coffee and a small porcelain dish of sliced fruit.

He was dressed in a casual charcoal cashmere sweater and tailored black trousers, looking less like a syndicate boss and more like a man who finally owned his own time.

“You're awake,” Luca said, his gray eyes softening as he walked over and placed the tray on the bedside table.

“How is the hand?”

“It’s healing,” I answered, swinging my legs over the edge of the mattress.

“The throbbing stopped around four in the morning.”

“Good,” Luca murmured, pulling up a chair and handing me a cup of coffee.

“Because we have visitors downstairs.”

I paused, the rim of the porcelain cup hovering inches from my lips.

“Visitors? Who? The capos?”

“No,” Luca replied, his jaw tightening slightly as he leaned back.

“Federal agents.”

“Specifically, Special Agent Miller of the FBI Organized Crime Task Force, accompanied by two Assistant U.S. Attorneys.”

My heart gave a nervous flutter.

“Are they here to arrest us?”

“They are here to negotiate,” Luca said, a dry, humorless smile touching his lips.

“They spent the last six months trying to build a RICO case against my father and the Bellini syndicate without a single piece of hard evidence.”

“Then you sent them eighty gigabytes of encrypted offshore bank ledgers, shipping manifests, and audio logs directly from our security terminal at midnight.”

“They landed on my front lawn by helicopter at six this morning.”

“They want an audience with the primary witness.”

“With you, Nora.”

I set the coffee cup down, my fingers suddenly cold.

“Me?”

“You are the one who smuggled the microSD card out of the pantry,” Luca said gently, reaching out to place his warm hand over my left knuckles.

“You are the legal owner of the digital evidence that took down two criminal empires in a single night.”

“The U.S. Attorney wants your formal deposition before they move to seize the remaining assets.”

“If you don't want to talk to them, I will have Marcus throw them off the property before they finish their coffee.”

I looked into Luca’s eyes, seeing the fierce, unyielding protection burning beneath his calm exterior.

He was ready to go to war with the federal government all over again just to keep me safe from the legal spotlight.

I shook my head slowly, taking a deep breath to steady my nerves.

“No, Luca.”

“I’ll talk to them.”

“If I’m going to run this estate as your partner, I need to face the light, not hide in the shadows.”
