Chapter 4 - The Erased Footage and the Midnight Cover-Up

The wrought-iron gates of the Harrington estate parted silently as Brooklyn's white Mercedes convertible slipped through the darkness.

It was two o'clock in the morning, and the Paradise Valley mountain was wrapped in heavy, suffocating silence.

Yellow crime scene tape still fluttered across the grand double doors of the mansion, illuminated by the security floodlights.

Brooklyn parked her car far down the cobblestone driveway, killing the headlights to avoid drawing the attention of neighboring estates.

She slipped out of the vehicle, wearing black leggings and an oversized hoodie, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She used her personal biometric keycard to bypass the rear service entrance, stepping into the dark, silent house.

The faint, sickening odor of burnt peanut oil and sour tomato soup still hung in the air, a phantom reminder of the afternoon's violence.

Brooklyn pulled a miniature tactical flashlight from her pocket, keeping the beam directed strictly at the polished floor.

She stepped around the stained section of hardwood where Callan had fallen, refusing to look at the dried brown crust of soup on the baseboard.

Her destination was not the kitchen, but the climate-controlled server closet located beneath the grand spiral staircase in the eastern wing.

She had watched the Apex Vault technicians run cables into that closet three weeks earlier while she was sunbathing by the pool.

She knew that all the smart home automation, the audio systems, and the video cameras terminated inside that locked utility room.

Brooklyn reached the heavy oak door and punched in the six-digit master security code Melissa used for the estate: her late father's birthday.

The electronic lock beeped softly, and the magnetic latch released with a quiet click.

Inside, the server rack hummed quietly, illuminated by rows of green and amber indicator lights reflecting off black steel casing.

A sleek monitor was mounted to the wall beside the main processing unit, displaying a digital login interface for the property's security suite.

Brooklyn sat down in the technician's swivel chair, her hands shaking so violently she could barely operate the trackball.

The screen prompted her for an administrative username and password.

She typed "ADMIN" and entered Melissa's primary corporate password, a string of letters and numbers her mother used for every banking portal.

The system chimed, granting administrative access to the primary security console.

Brooklyn navigated frantically through the directory tree until she located the folder labeled "ZONES — MAIN RESIDENCE."

She clicked on the sub-folder titled "ZONE 01 — GOURMET KITCHEN & DINING."

A grid of video thumbnails populated the screen, organized by date and hourly timestamps.

Her breath hitched in her throat as she saw the file marked: "TODAY — 12:00:00 TO 13:00:00 — 4K_UHD_AUDIO."

She clicked the thumbnail, bringing up the video playback window.

There, in blinding, ultra-high-definition clarity, was the dining room, rendered with cinematic depth and crystal-clear stereo audio.

Brooklyn scrubbed the digital playhead forward until she reached the twelve-forty mark.

The screen showed Avery stepping through the double doors, holding the copper soup pot with careful, measured steps.

Then, Brooklyn watched herself stand up from the mahogany table, eyes locked onto Avery's shoulder like a predator tracking prey.

The video captured Brooklyn's deliberate, unprovoked pivot, the sudden drop of her shoulder, and the violent collision that sent the soup flying.

The microphone pickup was so sensitive that it clearly recorded Brooklyn's hushed whisper two seconds before the impact:

"Watch this, Mother."

Brooklyn gasped aloud in the empty server room, clapping a trembling hand over her mouth.

The video continued to play mercilessly.

It captured her theatrical, exaggerated scream of agony, followed by Callan's explosive, irrational rage.

Then came the moment that made Brooklyn's blood run completely cold.

The camera angle, positioned high in the crown molding, provided an unobstructed, head-on view of the kitchen island.

It showed Callan towering over Avery, his face contorted in demonic fury as he bellowed for her submission.

It showed Avery standing her ground, battered but dignified, refusing to apologize for a crime she had not committed.

And then came the strike.

The 4K camera captured Callan's hand whipping forward in agonizing detail, the sickening crack of skin against bone echoing through the speakers.

It showed Avery staggering backward against the island, her face swelling instantly under the brutal impact.

It captured Brooklyn sitting at the table in the background, a vile, cruel smirk spreading across her lips as she watched her brother strike his wife.

And finally, it showed Callan raising his fist to hit her a second time, advancing with clear intent to inflict severe bodily harm.

Only then did Avery's hands grab the skillet in sheer, desperate panic, swinging it upward to stop her husband's violent charge.

Every single claim the Harrington family had given to the police, the media, and the district attorney was completely, unequivocally dismantled by the footage.

"No, no, no," Brooklyn whimpered, her fingers flying across the keyboard.

She selected the entire daily recording directory and dragged it toward the digital trash bin icon on the desktop.

A prompt flashed across the screen: "WARNING: ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO PERMANENTLY PURGE LOCAL STORAGE FOR ZONE 01?"

Brooklyn clicked "YES" without a second's hesitation.

A progress bar swept across the screen, turning from blue to empty gray within five seconds.

"LOCAL CACHE SUCCESSFULLY PURGED," the system announced in cheerful green text.

Brooklyn collapsed back into the chair, letting out a long, ragged exhale of pure relief.

She had done it.

The video was gone, the evidence was eradicated, and the Harrington family's version of reality was once again the only truth that existed.

She closed the utility program, wiped the trackball and keyboard with the sleeve of her hoodie, and exited the server room, locking the door behind her.

She slipped out of the estate like a ghost in the night, entirely confident that she had saved her family from total social and legal destruction.

What Brooklyn Harrington did not know, however, was that Nathan Cole had designed the Apex Vault platform specifically to defeat inside tampering.

Six miles away, in a secure downtown law office, Evelyn Cross was already sitting at her desk with a steaming mug of black coffee.

Beside her sat Nathan Cole himself, summoned from his bed by an emergency legal subpoena and a five-thousand-dollar midnight retainer fee.

Nathan's laptop was connected directly to the Apex Vault enterprise cloud servers, displaying a live administrative audit log for the Harrington residence.

At exactly 02:14:32 AM, a red alert flashed across Nathan's screen:

"UNAUTHORIZED LOCAL PURGE DETECTED ON CLIENT NODE: 884-HARRINGTON-ESTATE."

"ATTEMPTED DELETION OF ZONE 01 ARCHIVE BY IP: LOCAL_CONSOLE_01."

"AUTOMATIC FAILSAFE ENGAGED: MASTER COPY SECURED IN TAMPER-PROOF OFF-SITE IMMUTABLE STORAGE."

Nathan looked up from his screen, adjusting his glasses with a dry, professional chuckle.

"Well, Ms. Cross," Nathan said, turning the laptop toward the attorney.

"Someone just snuck into the Harrington server room twenty minutes ago and tried to erase the entire afternoon's surveillance recording."

"Did they succeed?" Evelyn asked, her hazel eyes narrowing with intense concentration.

"Not a chance," Nathan replied, tapping the keyboard.

"Apex Vault uses write-once, read-many blockchain storage for all enterprise security archives."

"Once a packet leaves that camera, it cannot be altered, overwritten, or deleted by anyone—not even the homeowner."

"The master 4K video of the entire assault is sitting right here on my encrypted cloud drive, completely untouched and mathematically verified."

"And even better, the system logged the exact user credentials used to attempt the deletion."

"Melissa Harrington's administrative account was used from the internal physical console at two-fourteen this morning."

Evelyn Cross leaned back in her leather executive chair, a triumphant, razor-sharp smile cutting across her face.

"That is not just evidence of Avery's innocence, Nathan," Evelyn whispered into the quiet office.

"That is active, felony spoliation of evidence and obstruction of justice by the Harrington family."

"Print three certified copies of that audit log, and put the raw video files on four encrypted external drives."

"We are going to give Victoria Vance and the Harrington family the surprise of their miserable, arrogant lives at ten o'clock this morning."
