Chapter 9 - Fractured Bloodlines and the Sister's Betrayal

The interrogation rooms at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Headquarters were designed to crush a suspect's spirit through sterile monotony.

Brooklyn Harrington sat in a hard vinyl chair, her designer sweater rumpled, her face pale and haggard under the hum of fluorescent lights.

Across the metal table sat her defense attorney, Howard Vance—a distant cousin of the prosecutor—who looked exhausted and deeply annoyed.

Beside them sat Evelyn Cross and Special Agent Daniel Ross from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's white-collar crime division.

Brooklyn’s eyes were bloodshot, darting frantically between the federal agent’s gold badge and her attorney’s grim expression.

"Let me explain your current legal standing with complete mathematical clarity, Ms. Harrington," Special Agent Ross began, his voice flat and unyielding.

"You are facing three state counts of perjury, one count of felony evidence tampering, and one count of filing a false police report."

"Those charges alone carry a mandatory minimum sentence of six years in the Arizona Department of Corrections."

"Furthermore, we are now reviewing the digital records from your personal phone seized during your arrest yesterday."

"At one-forty-five AM yesterday, twenty minutes before you entered the server room, your mother sent you an encrypted message via Signal."

Agent Ross slid an enlarged transcript across the metal table, tapping the printed text with his index finger.

The text message from Melissa Harrington read: "Get inside the server room and wipe the local drive before dawn, Brooklyn."

"If Callan goes down for this, our family line of credit dissolves, and you lose your trust fund stipend."

"Take the fall for a simple misdemeanor trespassing if you get caught; our lawyers will handle the rest."

Brooklyn stared at the words on the paper, her breath catching in her throat as the realization settled into her chest.

"She... she told me it was just a misdemeanor," Brooklyn stammered, her voice shaking like a leaf in an autumn wind.

"She said our corporate attorneys would have the charges dropped before anyone even noticed."

Howard Vance cleared his throat, adjusting his silk tie with nervous discomfort.

"My client was acting under extreme emotional duress and the direct manipulation of her mother, Agent Ross," the attorney offered weakly.

Evelyn Cross leaned forward, resting both forearms on the table, fixing Brooklyn with an unblinking, predatory stare.

"Do you want to know what your mother's legal team filed with the clerk of the court thirty minutes ago, Brooklyn?" Evelyn asked softly.

Brooklyn slowly raised her head, terror widening her blue eyes. "What did they file?"

"Melissa Harrington's criminal defense attorneys have filed a supplemental memorandum in her personal defense," Evelyn said, sliding a court document across the table.

"Paragraph twelve states that Melissa Harrington was asleep in her master suite when the server room was accessed."

"It explicitly states that you acted as a rogue agent without your mother's knowledge, authorization, or consent."

"Your mother is formally accusing you of stealing her administrative credentials to protect yourself from the soup-spilling incident."

"She is throwing you to the wolves to save her own skin and Callan's corporate standing."

Brooklyn grabbed the document with trembling fingers, her eyes scanning the brutal, surgical legal betrayal drafted by her own mother's lawyers.

"No," Brooklyn whispered, a tear dropping onto the legal paper, smudging the black ink.

"No, she promised me... she swore on my grandfather's grave that we would stand together."

"Your mother stands only for herself and the Harrington bank balance, Ms. Harrington," Evelyn pressed, her voice sharp as a razor.

"Callan is already facing felony domestic violence charges that will put him in prison for three to five years."

"If the federal indictments come down for bank fraud, he will be serving twenty years in a federal penitentiary."

"You have exactly twenty minutes to decide whose side you are on."

"You can go to prison as Melissa's scapegoat, or you can sign a comprehensive cooperation agreement with the Department of Justice."

"What do you want from me?" Brooklyn sobbed, wiping her wet cheeks with the sleeve of her expensive sweater.

"We want the burner phone Callan used to coordinate the Solana Ridge project," Evelyn said, leaning in closer.

"And we want the recording of the family dinner from two weeks ago where Melissa discussed Avery's parents."

Brooklyn froze, her breath hitching as she looked up at Evelyn with absolute, terrifying realization.

"You know about the hardware store?" Brooklyn whispered, her voice barely audible.

"We know the Harringtons never do anything without a backup plan," Evelyn replied calmly.

Brooklyn closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sob that seemed to shake her entire body.

The spoiled, arrogant girl who had laughed while taking my grandmother's bracelet was gone, replaced by a broken young woman facing the abyss.

"I have the phone," Brooklyn said, her voice trembling but clear.

"It's hidden in the false bottom of my jewelry armoire at the Paradise Valley house."

"And I didn't just record the dinner; I backed up all of Callan's voice notes from his private WhatsApp account."

"My mother... my mother had a private detective following Avery's parents for six months before the wedding."

"Callan used city zoning contacts to arrange for the city of Mesa to condemn the hardware store's rear parking lot for a fake municipal transit project."

"They were going to bankrupt Avery's parents so Avery would have no financial sanctuary to run to when the debt trap snapped."

Special Agent Ross exchanged a grim, electrified glance with Evelyn Cross across the metal table.

"Where are the audio files stored, Brooklyn?" Agent Ross asked, his pen poised above his official notepad.

"On my personal iCloud account," Brooklyn whispered, leaning her head against the cool metal of the table.

"The password is 'HarringtonLegacy'... all one word."

"I'll sign whatever you want, Agent Ross."

"Just please don't send me to Perryville prison... please don't let my mother destroy me."

Evelyn Cross stood up, capping her pen with a quiet, satisfying click that sounded like the closing of a tomb.

"Draft the plea agreement, Agent Ross," Evelyn said, turning toward the heavy steel door.
