Chapter 1: The Kitchen Floor

Clara was on her knees, trying to pick up the broken pieces of a plate she had accidentally dropped. Her hands were shaking. She was already seven months pregnant, and bending down made her dizzy, but Margaret showed no mercy.
“Clumsy girl,” Margaret spat from above. “Can’t even hold a plate properly. What kind of mother are you going to be?”
Clara didn’t answer. She kept her head down and continued picking up the shards, hoping Margaret would eventually leave her alone.
But Margaret wasn’t finished.
She took a step closer, her voice rising.
“Look at me when I’m talking to you!”
Clara slowly raised her head. The moment her eyes met Margaret’s, a sharp, stinging pain exploded across the left side of her face.
SLAP!
The force of the slap was so strong that Clara lost her balance. She fell sideways, her hip hitting the hard kitchen floor first before her body followed. A sharp pain shot through her lower back and abdomen. She immediately curled up, both hands clutching her pregnant belly as she gasped for air.
Margaret stood over her, breathing heavily.
“That’s what you get for talking back to me in my own house!”
Clara’s ears were ringing. Tears blurred her vision. She tried to push herself up, but the pain in her stomach made her whimper.
At that exact moment, the front door opened.
Ethan walked in, still holding his work bag. He froze the second he stepped into the kitchen.
What he saw made his blood run cold.
His pregnant wife was on the floor, curled up in pain, one hand covering her red, swelling cheek. His mother was standing over her with her hand still raised.
For one terrifying second, Ethan couldn’t move.
Then Clara let out a small, pained sound.
“Ethan…”
That single word broke something inside him.
“Mom—!”
Ethan dropped his bag and sprinted across the kitchen. In two large strides, he reached them. Without thinking, he grabbed Margaret by the shoulders and shoved her backward with force.
Margaret stumbled and nearly fell against the counter.
“Ethan!” she cried out in shock. “What are you doing?!”
Ethan didn’t answer her. He immediately dropped to his knees beside Clara, his hands hovering over her body, unsure where to touch without hurting her.
“Clara… Clara, baby, look at me,” his voice was shaking. “Are you okay? Did she hurt the baby? Tell me!”
Clara looked up at him with tears streaming down her face. The red mark of Margaret’s hand was clearly visible on her cheek.
“She… she slapped me,” Clara whispered, her voice breaking. “I fell… Ethan, my stomach hurts…”
Ethan’s face turned pale. He gently placed one hand on her belly, then looked up at his mother with an expression Margaret had never seen before.
Pure rage.
He slowly stood up and stepped in front of Clara, shielding her with his body.
“You hit her,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “You hit my pregnant wife. You made her fall.”
Margaret straightened her clothes, trying to regain her composure.
“She was being disrespectful! I was just disciplining her—”
“Disciplining her?!” Ethan shouted. The sound of his voice made both women flinch. “She’s seven months pregnant and you slapped her so hard she fell to the ground! Are you insane?!”
He took a step toward his mother. Margaret instinctively stepped back.
Ethan pointed at Clara, who was still on the floor, holding her stomach.
“That is my wife. That is my child she’s carrying. And you put your hands on her.”
His voice dropped even lower.
“Get out of my sight. Right now. Before I do something I’ll regret.”
Margaret’s face turned red with anger and humiliation.
“You’re choosing her over your own mother?”
Ethan didn’t hesitate.
“Every single time.”
He turned his back on Margaret and carefully helped Clara up from the floor. One arm wrapped protectively around her waist while the other supported her back.
“We’re going to the hospital,” he said softly to Clara. “Right now.”
As he walked past his mother with Clara in his arms, he stopped for just a second and looked at Margaret one last time.

“If anything happens to my wife or my child because of what you did tonight…” His voice was ice cold. “I will never forgive you.”
Then he walked out of the kitchen, carrying his wife, leaving Margaret standing alone under the bright kitchen lights.
