Chapter 8 - The Venom Of The Cornered Bull

The crash of Jason’s chair hitting the floor sent a shock wave through the dining room. Aunt Martha let out a sharp shriek, and my mother instinctively reached out to grab Dad’s arm, her eyes wide with panic as she watched her golden-child firstborn completely lose his composure.
Jason stood over the table, his chest heaving, his nostrils flared. All the carefully cultivated charm of the successful suburban real estate mogul had evaporated, leaving only the screaming, insecure bully who used to shove me into lockers when we were kids.
"You think you're better than me?!" Jason screamed, his voice cracking slightly with unadulterated rage. "You little parasite! You spent your whole life living in my shadow, and now you walk in here like some kind of messiah because you managed to knock up a woman who probably didn't know any better!"
Emily’s eyes flashed with a dangerous, icy fire, but before she could unleash the verbal destruction she was clearly preparing, I raised my hand slightly.
"Keep talking, Jason," I said softly, my voice dangerously calm. "Let everyone at the table hear exactly what kind of man you are when your fragile little ego gets scratched."
"Screw you!" Jason snarled, jabbing a thick, trembling finger in my direction. "You come in here waving your supposed millions around, flashing a wife nobody’s ever met, and a kid you probably rented for the holiday just to stick it to Mom and Dad!"
The dining room went from dead silent to a level of frozen horror that defied description. Even my mother looked physically nauseated by the sheer vulgarity of Jason’s accusation.
Amanda’s head snapped toward her husband, her face draining of all color. "Jason! Stop it! Have you lost your mind?!"
"Shut up, Amanda!" Jason barked without even looking at his wife, his entire field of vision narrowed down to the target of his lifelong insecurity. He took a menacing step around the edge of the mahogany table, closing the distance between us. "No, seriously! Let’s look at the facts here! Are we even sure this kid is yours, Brian?!"
The words dropped like a cluster bomb into the middle of the Thanksgiving feast.
Emily froze, her breath catching in her throat as she pulled little Nathan tighter against her chest, her protective instincts flaring like a wild animal's. My father muttered a weak, horrified, "Jason... that is entirely out of line..." but he didn't stand up to block his path.
I didn't blink. I didn't raise my fists.
I placed both palms flat on the dining table, leaning forward slowly, my eyes locked dead onto my brother's terrified, sweat-beaded face.

"Say that again," I whispered.
The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bone.
