Chapter 9 - The Unraveling Of The Golden Family

Jason stopped dead in his tracks, standing three feet away from me. For a split second, something resembling self-awareness flickered behind his bloodshot eyes—the sudden realization that he had crossed a line so monumental, so toxic, that even his adoring parents couldn't spin it into a joke.

"I... I just meant..." Jason stammered, his bravado stuttering for the first time in his life. "You expect us to believe you’ve been married for two years, hiding a whole life, and now you show up out of nowhere—"

"You questioned the paternity of my son," I interrupted, my voice dropping into a lethal, glacial whisper that made the candles on the table seem to flicker. "You insulted my wife. You insulted my marriage. And you did it because you couldn't stand the thought of not being the center of attention for a single second."

Amanda buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with mortification and quiet rage. The facade of the perfect suburban power couple had just been shattered by the husband's own uncontrollable malice.

Mom stood up, her voice trembling violently as she looked between her two sons like a referee who had lost control of a gladiatorial arena. "Jason... apologize to your brother right now. That... that was a horrible thing to say."

Jason scoffed, refusing to look at our mother. He crossed his arms defensively, trying to salvage whatever tattered remnants of his dignity he had left. "Oh, come on! Everyone was thinking it! He drops a whole family on us like a bomb on Thanksgiving and expects us to just roll out the red carpet? I’m the only one honest enough to say what’s on everyone’s mind!"

"No, Jason," I said, straightening up to my full height and stepping around the table until I was standing right in front of him. "You’re the only one arrogant enough to assume that because your life is a performance, everyone else’s must be a lie."

He tried to hold my gaze, but the sheer weight of my indifference—and the absolute, undeniable reality of the family I had built without his permission—crushed him. He looked away, his jaw working furiously as he chewed on his own humiliation.

Emily stepped forward, shifting Nathan in her arms, her voice cutting through the heavy air with surgical precision.

"We came here tonight because Brian wanted to give his parents a chance to know their grandson," Emily said, her tone dripping with quiet, devastating dignity. "We didn't come here to audition for your approval, Jason. And we certainly didn't come here to be insulted by a man who measures his own worth by how small he can make everyone else feel."

She turned her gaze toward my mother and father, who looked smaller, older, and infinitely more fragile than they had three hours ago.

"Merry Thanksgiving," Emily added quietly. "Come on, Brian. We’re going home."
