Chapter 3 - THE DIGITAL WAR ROOM: HACKING THE MASTER HUB BEFORE MICHAEL’S RETURN

I settled Lily in front of the television in the living room, putting on her favorite animated movie to distract her, and placed a plate of sliced apples and a cup of juice on the coffee table.
“Stay right here, sweetie. Mommy just needs to check something upstairs real quick,” I told her, kissing her head.
“Okay, Mommy,” she whispered, her eyes glued to the screen.
I hurried up the carpeted stairs, my bare feet making no sound, and slipped into our master bedroom.
The master closet was spacious, lined with custom wooden shelving and built-in drawers. Tucked away on the top shelf, hidden behind a stack of winter duvets, was the heart of our smart-home network: the master server hub and security recording deck.
My heart hammered against my ribs as I reached up, pulled the heavy black metal box down, and set it onto the floor.
I had set up this entire system three years ago when we first moved into the house, utilizing an encrypted, closed-circuit Linux-based architecture rather than relying solely on vulnerable cloud apps—a technical precaution I had implemented back when I worked as a freelance IT security consultant before becoming a stay-at-home mom.
Thank God for my paranoid technical background.
If the system had relied exclusively on Diane’s cloud interface permissions, she could have logged into her phone right now, clipped the exact ten-second video of me slapping her, and uploaded it directly to Michael before he even crossed the city limits.
Instead, physical access to the local master hard drive was required to access the raw, unedited, circular multi-angle footage.
I pulled my old MacBook Air from beneath a pile of sweaters, retrieved a USB-C data cable from my travel bag, and plugged the laptop directly into the master server deck’s local diagnostic port.
A green LED light flickered, and a login prompt appeared on my laptop screen.
Enter Administrator Password:
I typed in the complex, twelve-character alphanumeric password I had memorized years ago—a password Diane didn't even know existed.
Access Granted.
A directory of folders popped up instantly on my desktop:
Cam_01_Front_Porch
Cam_02_Back_Patio
Cam_03_Driveway_Garage
Cam_04_Guest_Hallway
I clicked on Cam_03_Driveway_Garage.
A calendar file spanning the past thirty days appeared. I selected today’s date, navigated to the 4:30 PM timecode, and hit play.
The video window opened, streaming crisp, 4K high-definition footage directly from the camera mounted above the garage eaves.
On screen, the blistering Arizona sun beat down on the driveway.
Within seconds, the camera captured the entire horrifying sequence in breathtaking, uncompromising detail:
Diane dragging Lily by the arm.
Lily screaming and crying.
Diane lifting my three-year-old daughter and dropping her mercilessly into the green industrial municipal waste bin.
Me sprinting out of the house barefoot.
Me begging Diane to take her out.
Diane shoving me violently.
Me falling onto the scorching concrete driveway, scraping my elbows and knees.
Me jumping back up in a blind fury of maternal terror.
Diane walking away casually.
Me spinning her around by her hair and slapping her across the face.
And finally, Diane pointing triumphantly at the camera, wearing that venomous, calculating smile.
I watched the footage twice, a cold tear slipping down my cheek as I saw my baby tossed into the trash like unwanted garbage.
Then, with shaking hands, I executed the next phase of my digital war plan.
I didn't delete the footage from the master drive. Deleting it would arouse immediate suspicion if Michael audited the system later.
Instead, I used an advanced script to create an encrypted, password-protected mirror partition on the drive, routing the live feed of Cam_03 to display a looping, seamless five-minute buffer of empty driveway footage during any playback attempt initiated from external admin devices—such as Diane’s or Michael’s phones.
If Diane logged into her app right now to show Michael the "assault," she would see a peaceful, empty driveway with no trace of the trash bin incident.
And on my encrypted local drive?
I saved the raw, unedited, high-definition master file containing every single second of Diane’s vicious abuse.
I ejected the USB cable, shoved the master server deck back onto the top shelf behind the duvets, and closed my laptop just as the grandfather clock in the downstairs hallway chimed 5:45 PM.
Fifteen minutes.

Fifteen minutes until Michael walked through the front door.
Fifteen minutes until the ultimate confrontation between a loyal husband, a venomous mother-in-law, and a mother fighting for the soul of her child.
