Chapter 8 - THE INTERROGATION: DIANE’S ARROGANCE COLLAPSES UNDER THE WEIGHT OF PROOF

Down at the central police precinct, the fluorescent lights of Interrogation Room B buzzed with a harsh, sterile intensity.

Diane Vance sat across a metal table, her hands cuffed loosely to a bolted ring, her face contorted in an expression of furious, venomous defiance.

She had spent her entire life intimidating people with her wealth, her social standing, and her sharp, razor-sharp tongue. She genuinely believed the police were making a catastrophic mistake.

The heavy metal door swung open, and Sergeant Miller walked in, tossing a thick manila folder onto the table before pulling out a metal chair and sitting down.

“Well, Mrs. Vance,” Sergeant Miller said, leaning forward and folding his arms. “You’ve had a busy Saturday. How are you holding up?”

“This is an outrage!” Diane shrieked, slamming her cuffed hands against the table. “Do you know who I am?! I demand to speak to my lawyer immediately! My son is Michael Vance, senior vice president of regional operations! He will have your badge before midnight!”

Sergeant Miller chuckled quietly, opening the manila folder and sliding a glossy 8x10 still-frame photo across the metal surface.

Diane stopped screaming.

Her eyes locked onto the photograph resting directly in front of her.

It was a crystal-clear, high-definition image captured from the garage camera: her own hands lifting three-year-old Lily and dropping her into the green industrial waste bin.

The color drained entirely from Diane’s powdered face. Her mouth dropped open, but no sound came out.

“Recognize that, Mrs. Vance?” Sergeant Miller asked smoothly. “That’s your granddaughter. Tossed into a municipal trash bin like a piece of refuse. Captured in 4K resolution with accompanying audio.”

Diane swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she stared at the photo like it was a venomous snake. “That... that’s manipulated. That’s deepfake technology! My son’s wife is an IT expert, she fabricated it!”

Sergeant Miller pulled out a small tablet, tapped the screen, and pressed play.

The audio of Diane’s voice echoed off the cinderblock walls of the interrogation room:

“Just make sure she doesn't leave marks... She needs to learn discipline... Lock her in the dark box.”

Diane flinched as if she had been physically struck, sinking back into her metal chair, her arrogant facade completely and utterly shattered.

“You have the right to remain silent,” Sergeant Miller recited crisply, pulling out a pair of formal charging documents. “You are being formally charged with felony child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and reckless endangerment of a minor. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Diane stared at the metal table, the terrifying reality of her actions finally catching up with her.
