Chapter 4 - The Mask Slips

The dining room descended into a silence so absolute you could hear the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. Victoria’s hand trembled ever so slightly as she reached back for her wine glass, her knuckles turning white against the stem. The polished, untouchable matriarch facade was fracturing right before our eyes, replaced by the cornered predator I had caught a glimpse of the night before.
"What on earth are you implying, Elena?" Victoria asked, her voice dropping its sugary sweetness, hardening into a sharp, venomous hiss. "Are you sitting at my table, in my home, dragging up tragic family history on your very first day as a bride? Have you completely lost your mind?"
"I think my mind is clearer than it has ever been," I replied smoothly, maintaining absolute calm as I watched her sweat. "I spent the morning reading about heavy metal toxicity, accidental poisonings, and estate inheritances. It’s amazing what you can find when you look past the official police summaries and talk to people who actually lived in this neighborhood five years ago."
Julian slammed his palms down onto the table, standing up so fast his chair screeched loudly against the floorboards. His face was flushed with a mixture of fury and absolute terror.
"Enough! Both of you, stop it right now!" Julian shouted, his voice shaking with a desperation that bordered on hysteria. "Elena, how could you bring that up? That was a tragic accident! The police investigated everything, and they cleared Mom completely! Why are you trying to poison our marriage before it has even had a chance to breathe?"
"Your marriage?" I scoffed, standing up to meet his gaze eye-to-eye. "Julian, look around you! This isn't a marriage; it's a hostage situation! Your mother slept in our bed on our wedding night, wearing your shirt, covered in mysterious stains, and you expect me to just smile, pour coffee, and play the happy little housewife? What else is she hiding in this house, Julian? What else are you too terrified to tell me?"
Victoria let out a low, humorless laugh—a sound that sent a shiver straight down my spine. She slowly rose from her chair, her movements calculated and eerily deliberate. She walked around the long mahogany table until she was standing right beside Julian, sliding her arm through his with an intimate familiarity that made my skin crawl.
"You think you know everything, don't you, little girl?" Victoria whispered, her eyes flashing with a dark, manic triumph. "You think a white dress and a signed certificate make you the master of this house? Julian is mine. He has always been mine. Every choice he makes, every woman he brings home, every breath he takes in this house is filtered through my approval. You were just meant to be a pleasant accessory—a incubator to give me grandchildren. But you are far too curious for your own good."
Julian looked down at his mother, his expression twisting in agony. He didn't pull his arm away. Instead, he whispered defensively, almost pleadingly: "Mom... please. Stop talking like that."
"No, Julian, it's time he faced reality," I said, stepping closer, my heart pounding like a drum. "And it's time you woke up to the fact that your mother is never going to let you go. You can choose to stay trapped in this Gothic nightmare, or you can walk out that door with me right now. But make no mistake—I am not sharing my husband with his mother."
Julian looked at me, a profound look of defeat washing over his features. He opened his mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape, Victoria’s expression shifted from smug triumph into an expression of absolute, calculated horror.

Before I could process what she was doing, Victoria grabbed a heavy crystal water pitcher from the center of the table, lifted it high into the air, and smashed it down hard against the edge of the mahogany surface. Shards of glass exploded everywhere, slicing across her own wrist in a swift, practiced motion. Blood instantly welled from the shallow gash, staining her expensive silk blouse bright crimson.
"Help! Julian, help me!" Victoria screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice instantly transforming into a masterclass of pure, theatrical hysteria. "She attacked me! Your new wife went completely insane because I asked for a glass of water! Help me, Julian, she's trying to kill me!"
