Chapter 6 - The Safehouse and the Smoking Gun

I drove straight to my best friend Marcus’s apartment on the other side of the city. Marcus worked as a senior investigative journalist for a major metropolitan newspaper, and the moment he opened his front door and saw the state I was in—makeup smeared, eyes bloodshot, trembling with adrenaline—he pulled me inside without asking a single question.

For the next two hours, sitting on his worn leather couch with a steaming mug of tea between my shaking hands, I spilled everything. I told him about the wedding night intrusion, the bloodstained mattress, the hidden archives regarding Arthur Vance's mysterious death, Victoria’s calculated self-harm, and Julian’s pathetic capitulation to his mother's psychological abuse.

Marcus listened intently, taking notes on a legal pad, his expression growing darker by the minute. When I finished, he let out a long whistle and shook his head.

"Elena, you walked straight into a psychological snake pit," Marcus said, his tone serious and analytical. "This isn't just a toxic mother-in-law dynamic; this is textbook pathological enmeshment crossed with potential foul play. If what you found in those local archives about Arthur Vance is true, Victoria is not just manipulative—she’s dangerous. And Julian is completely under her spell, acting as her emotional shield."

"I don't care about saving Julian anymore," I said, staring blankly at the coffee table. "I just want to expose what really happened in that house before she manages to trap someone else, or worse, before she pins some fake assault charge on me."

"Then we need hard, undeniable proof," Marcus replied, standing up and walking over to his desk. "Public forum rumors and old newspaper clippings won't hold up in court if Victoria decides to press charges for assault or harassment. We need physical evidence from inside that house—evidence linking her directly to Arthur’s poisoning five years ago, or proof of whatever happened on your wedding night."

"The master bedroom," I realized, the memory flashing vividly in my mind. "When I went upstairs this morning, there was a locked antique desk in the corner of Victoria's old room—the room she refuses to give up. Julian always claimed it held old family heirlooms, but he never had the key."

"A locked desk belonging to a woman who allegedly covered up a murder?" Marcus smiled grimly, tapping his pen against his chin. "That’s where the real skeletons are buried. But how do we get inside without tipping them off?"

We spent the next hour hatching a daring, high-stakes plan. It was risky, dangerous, and required precise timing. While Julian and Victoria were likely distracted dealing with the aftermath of the staged kitchen incident—perhaps even filing a police report against me—we needed to slip back into the house, access the locked desk, and extract whatever documents or physical proof Victoria had spent years hiding from the world.

As evening began to fall, casting long purple shadows across the city skyline, Marcus and I climbed into his car and drove back toward the upscale suburban neighborhood. My heart hammered against my ribs with every mile we covered. I knew that if we were caught, the consequences would be catastrophic. But backing down was no longer an option. We pulled into a dark side street a block away from the Vance residence, killed the headlights, and waited for the house to go completely dark.
