Chapter 6 - The Iron Lift

The ceiling of the underground wine cellar vibrated violently under the weight of three hundred wedding guests dancing above.

Bass notes from the grand string orchestra leaked through the vintage mortar and beam construction like distant thunder.

Ethan examined the manual counterweight cables of the oversized champagne lift.

The cage was built from heavy wrought iron and riveted industrial steel, designed to haul half-ton pallets of vintage crystal and magnum bottles.

Its rusted cables wound around a cast-iron drum mounted into the subterranean bedrock.

"Maya, take your sisters inside the lift basket right now," Ethan instructed calmly, pulling the brass gate open.

The four girls squeezed together onto the wooden floorboards of the lift, their torn organza dresses rustling in the dark.

Sophie sat curled in Maya's lap, clutching her older sister’s thumb as though it were an anchor in a raging sea.

Sarah held the encrypted micro-SD card tightly between her trembling fingers before pressing it into Ethan’s palm.

"If Julian’s private security catches us before we reach the main floor, they will make all five of us vanish into the ocean," Sarah whispered.

Her knuckles were raw and split from being tied to the wooden chair, but her eyes held a mother’s unyielding ferocity.

"Julian doesn't own this hotel, Sarah," Ethan said, pulling a steel crowbar from an old maintenance crate near the wall.

"My father hired the engineers who drew the structural schematics for this entire resort."

"Julian thinks he commands the room, but he only stands on a stage we built."

Heavy boots pounded against the exterior flagstones of the brick tunnel just around the archway.

Flashlight beams danced across the damp walls, cutting through the swirling subterranean mist.

"Drop the gate! They’re inside the service lift shaft!" shouted Julian’s security chief, his voice echoing off the curved ceiling.

Three armed security guards in charcoal suits skidded around the corner, reaching for their tactical holsters.

Ethan jammed the iron crowbar directly between the teeth of the emergency gear brake, releasing the counterweight catch.

The massive counterweight dropped down the secondary shaft with a deafening metallic roar.

The iron lift lurched upward with explosive momentum, tearing free from the cellar floor just as two stun darts sparked against the iron lattice.

The girls gasped as the floor rose rapidly beneath them, the cellar shrinking into the gloom below.

Sarah grabbed the steel support cables, shielding Sophie and Lily with her own body.

"We’re going straight up into the backstage banquet pantry," Ethan shouted over the grinding groans of the industrial chain.

Through the open-slat ceiling above, bright chandelier light began spilling into the darkness of the vertical shaft.

Ethan pulled his phone from his coat, inserting the micro-SD card into an OTG card reader attached to his port.

He dialed a nine-digit private frequency number he had memorized ten years ago.

It was the personal secure line of Marcus Sterling, Julian’s elderly uncle and the founding chairman of the board.

The phone rang twice before an aged, gravelly voice answered over the background hum of the wedding orchestra.

"Who is this? I am in the middle of my nephew's private ceremony."

"Marcus, it’s Ethan Vance," Ethan said, his voice cutting through the speaker with absolute clarity.

The line went utterly dead on the other end, the old man’s breath hitching sharply.

"Ethan? That... that is impossible. You were lost at sea."

"I am seventy feet directly below your table in the grand ballroom," Ethan said calmly.

"And I am coming up with Sarah Lin and four witnesses who can prove your nephew arranged the mountain crash that killed my father."

"You have two minutes to ensure the federal marshals stationed outside the hotel don't leave the perimeter."

Before Marcus could respond, the lift slammed upward against the primary stop-block with a heavy shudder.

A hidden floor latch released above them, and the ornate parquet floor of the private banquet pantry parted open like a trapdoor.

Ethan shoved the wooden service doors wide, stepping into the blinding light and suffocating luxury of the wedding of the year.
