Chapter 9 - The Crumbling Dynasty

The grand ballroom collapsed into utter pandemonium as journalists from the back rows rushed the center aisle with cameras flashing.
Dozens of elite guests stood up, knocking over gilded chairs in their haste to distance themselves from the Davenport and Sterling families.
"Get these cameras out of here! Shut down the broadcast!" Senator Davenport roared, waving wildly at his security detail.
None of the guards moved; they were watching Ethan Vance and Marcus Sterling standing side by side at the altar.
Clara Davenport ripped the eight-foot silk cape from her shoulders, hurling it onto the floor in a fit of hysterical rage.
"You set us up, you filthy street urchins!" she screamed at Maya and the three little girls.
"I gave you designer dresses! I gave you food! You were supposed to be our perfect little accessories on the live stream!"
Little Sophie buried her face deeper into Sarah’s coat, whimpering as Clara’s shrill voice bounced off the chandeliers.
Sarah stepped in front of her daughters, her posture straight, commanding, and unshakable.
"My daughters are human beings, Clara," Sarah said, her voice cutting through the noise with razor-sharp dignity.
"Not props for your counterfeit dynasty."
Julian scrambled to his feet, lunging toward the glass lectern in a desperate attempt to snatch the encrypted card from Marcus’s hand.
Ethan intercepted him instantly, catching Julian by the collar of his ivory silk tuxedo and slamming him back against the wooden floral arch.
The white gardenias broke loose, raining down around Julian’s disheveled head like mocking confetti.
"You think this ends here, Ethan?" Julian wheezed, his manicured fingers clawing at Ethan’s forearm.
"You’ve been a ghost for five years! You have no standing, no company board, no legal existence!"
"The state declared you dead! You can’t touch a single share of Vance Global without a court order that takes years!"
A sharp, authoritative knock sounded from the heavy oak double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom.
Four state troopers in crisp slate-gray uniforms marched into the room, led by a tall woman wearing a dark federal trench coat.
She carried a leather-bound folder embossed with the golden seal of the United States Department of Justice.
Special Agent Veronica Hayes stepped past the fleeing socialites, her heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor.
"Mr. Julian Sterling?" Agent Hayes called out, holding up her gold badge for the room to see.
Julian froze against the archway, his face draining of whatever color remained.
"Special Agent Hayes, Federal Criminal Investigation Division," she stated, opening the leather folder.
"We’ve had federal warrants pending for wire fraud, witness tampering, and corporate conspiracy for forty-eight hours."
"We were only waiting for verified forensic banking evidence to execute the arrest."
She looked up at Ethan, offering a brief, knowing nod of respect.
"It appears the evidence has just been provided."
Two troopers stepped forward, pulling Julian’s arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs onto his manicured wrists.
"Let go of me! Do you know who my prospective father-in-law is?" Julian thrash-screamed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria.
"He knows exactly who he is," Marcus Sterling said coldly, turning his back on his nephew.
"And the Sterling Board of Directors will be holding an emergency vote within the hour to strip Julian of every title, share, and penny he holds."
Clara backed away toward the emergency exit, her white gown dragging through spilled champagne.
"Clara Davenport," Agent Hayes added, not even turning around as two more troopers blocked the side doors.
"You are also under arrest as an accessory to kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment of Sarah Lin."
Clara dropped to her knees on the red carpet, sobbing into her diamond-ringed hands as the handcuffs clicked shut around her wrists.
Senator Davenport closed his eyes in defeat, stepping away from the altar and vanishing through the private service corridor to avoid the flashing news cameras.
The four little girls watched in stunned silence as the two people who had terrorized them were marched down the long aisle in chains.
Maya exhaled a breath she seemed to have been holding for years, her shoulders sagging with immense relief.
She looked up at Ethan, who was standing beside her mother, watching the troopers clear the room.
"Is it over now?" Maya whispered, tugging gently on Ethan’s coat sleeve.
Ethan knelt down beside her, wiping a smudge of cellar soot from her cheek with the corner of his thumb.

"The hiding is over, Maya," Ethan said softly.
"Now, we build your real home."
