Chapter 7 - THE HOUSE OF CARDS COLLAPSES: INTERROGATIONS AND CONFESSIONS

The federal holding facility downtown smelled of industrial bleach, cold steel, and institutional despair.

In interrogation room B, beneath the harsh glare of a single overhead fluorescent bulb, Arthur Sterling sat slumped in a metal chair, his expensive Italian suit rumpled, his silver hair disheveled, looking every bit of his sixty-two years.

Across the stainless-steel table sat Vincent Romano, arms crossed over his chest, watching him with quiet detachment.

“It was Evelyn’s idea,” Arthur croaked out, his voice cracked and pathetic. He didn’t even try to defend himself anymore; the federal agents had already presented him with the offshore account logs, the Cayman Islands shell company deeds, and the audio recordings of his conversations with the corrupt prosecutors. “She came to me three years ago. She said your family was too powerful to beat legally, so we had to build a trap from the inside out. She wanted the entire Romano empire, Vincent. I swear to God, I was just trying to protect our investments.”

Vincent didn’t speak for a long time. He simply stared at the broken old man who had once thought he could buy and sell the city of Chicago.

“You raised a monster, Arthur,” Vincent said quietly. “And now she’s going to devour you right along with the rest of us.”

Meanwhile, in interrogation room A down the hall, Evelyn Sterling sat with her posture rigid, her hands cuffed to a metal loop in the center of the table.

Her blonde hair was messy, her designer gown stained with spilled champagne at the hem, but her eyes burned with a cold, psychotic fury as two federal prosecutors slid document after document across the table.

“These are your digital signatures, Ms. Sterling,” the lead prosecutor said evenly. “These are the wire transfers moving twenty-four million dollars of Romano assets into your personal Bahamian trust. And this is the forensic audit provided by Miss Chloe Vance detailing your direct communication with the federal task force.”

Evelyn stared at the name on the report.

Chloe Vance.

Her head snapped up, her lips curling back in a snarl.

“That little bitch,” Evelyn hissed, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. “She was nothing. Just a waitress. A nobody working for tips in a basement club.”

“She was a forensic accountant, Evelyn,” a calm voice spoke from the doorway.

Evelyn turned her head sharply.

Vincent stood in the doorway, leaning against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets, looking down at her with a mixture of pity and utter contempt.

“She was smarter than you, Evelyn,” Vincent said softly. “She didn’t need a society wedding or a fake smile to bring you down. She just needed the truth.”

Evelyn threw herself forward, rattling her handcuffs against the steel table, screaming obscenities as federal guards grabbed her shoulders and hauled her back into her chair.

“I’ll ruin you!” she shrieked, foam fleaking the corners of her mouth. “You hear me, Vincent?! You’ll never be legitimate! You’re just a thug in a nice suit! You’ll never be free of me!”

Vincent turned away from the glass partition, walking out into the quiet hallway without looking back.

The trap had sprung. The empire was safe.

But the war wasn't over yet.
