Chapter 9 - THE ASHES OF THE STERLING DYNASTY

Three weeks later, the front page of the Chicago Tribune carried a headline that shook the Midwest financial world to its core:
STERLING EMPIRE CRUMBLES: ARTHUR AND EVELYN STERLING INDICTED IN MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD AND MONEY-LAUNDERING SCHEME.
The accompanying photographs showed Arthur Sterling hiding his face behind a federal folder as he was led out of the Dirksen Federal Building in handcuffs, and Evelyn Sterling staring straight through the camera lenses with a look of cold, unyielding hatred that made front-page news across the nation.
The trial was swift and brutal.
With the master ledgers provided by Chloe Vance, the unedited audio recordings of federal conspiracy, and the corroborating financial records from the Bahamas trust, the prosecution’s case was airtight.
Arthur Sterling was sentenced to twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary—effectively a life sentence given his age.
Evelyn Sterling received eighteen years without the possibility of parole, her social standing reduced to orange prison scrubs and concrete walls.
The Sterling Ventures empire was dissolved, its assets auctioned off by the federal government, with the legitimate shipping terminals and real estate holdings quietly acquired by Romano Holdings at a fraction of their value.
The Romano family was stronger, wealthier, and more untouchable than ever before.
In the penthouse office overlooking the Chicago River, Vincent Romano stood alone by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a glass of aged bourbon as the afternoon sun cast golden light across the city skyline.
The door opened softly behind him.
Footsteps clicked against the hardwood floor.
Vincent didn’t need to turn around to know who it was.
Chloe Vance walked up beside him, wearing a sharp, professional navy blue blazer and slacks, looking every bit the brilliant financial strategist she had always been. She wasn't wearing an apron or holding a wine bottle anymore.
“The final asset restructuring papers have been signed and filed with the state board,” Chloe said, setting a leather folder down on his desk. “Romano Shipping is officially clear of all federal oversight.”
Vincent turned his head, looking down at her.
“And what about you, Chloe?” Vincent asked softly. “Now that the war is over, what do you plan to do?”
Chloe looked out at the vast, sprawling city below them, the wind whipping past the glass forty floors up.
“My aunt Elena never got justice twenty years ago,” Chloe said quietly. “Her name was buried, her memory was erased, and the men who destroyed her walked free in society drawing rooms.” She turned her hazel eyes to meet his dark gaze. “You gave me the power to tear their whole empire down to the ground. That’s worth more than any salary.”
Vincent set his bourbon glass down on the windowsill. He reached out, his hand gently resting on her shoulder.
“You didn’t just tear down their empire, Chloe,” Vincent said, his voice deep and warm with a rare, genuine sincerity. “You helped me build something real from the ashes.”
Chloe smiled—a small, radiant smile that transformed her face entirely.

“Then I guess we make a pretty good team, Boss.”
“A very good team,” Vincent agreed.
