Chapter 12 - Ground Stop

The deafening roar of the Gulfstream’s twin turbofans reverberated through the chassis of Agent Cross’s pursuit vehicle.

The jet wash from the accelerating aircraft struck the windshield like a localized hurricane, rocking the three-ton SUV on its suspension.

Trooper Reynolds swerved his marked cruiser across the taxiway, bypassing the outer turn lane to run parallel to the runway's grass median.

Agent Cross slammed her foot flat against the floorboards, matching the aircraft’s speed as it passed eighty knots.

"Bradley Tower, this is Cross!" the agent screamed into her radio transceiver.

"The aircraft has initiated takeoff roll without clearance!"

"Deploy emergency arresting cables or maintenance barricades on the southern threshold immediately!"

"Negative, Agent Cross!" the tower controller crackled back through the speaker.

"Runway Three-Three does not have military arresting gear!"

"If that jet hits seventy percent throttle, it will lift off before the runway threshold!"

Claire unbuckled her shoulder harness, lunging forward between the two front bucket seats.

"Agent Cross, the radio frequency!" Claire yelled over the engine noise.

"Apex Sovereign operates on private company channel one-two-eight-point-four!"

"Tune the vehicle's auxiliary emergency aviation radio to one-two-eight-point-four right now!"

Agent Cross glanced at the digital transceiver console mounted beneath the dash.

Her fingers flew across the selector knob, dialing the numbers with lightning precision.

The speaker hissed with static, then settled into a clean, carrier-frequency hum.

Claire grabbed the handheld microphone, pressed the side transmission lever, and spoke into the grille with absolute, razor-sharp authority.

"Captain Henderson, this is Claire Elizabeth Morgan!"

"Shut down the throttles on November-seven-eight-hotel-bravo right now!"

For two agonizing seconds, only the roar of jet engines filled the frequency.

Then, a startled, middle-aged male voice crackled through the vehicle's speakers.

"Mrs. Morgan? What is the meaning of this?"

"We have Mr. Morgan on board; he issued an urgent corporate medical clearance for immediate transport to Nassau!"

"The man sitting in your passenger cabin is not Michael Morgan!" Claire screamed into the mic.

"Michael Morgan is dead!"

"His body was cremated three weeks ago!"

"The man in your cabin is Julian Morgan, a federally wanted fugitive who just murdered Dr. Arthur Vance and set fire to his clinical laboratory!"

"He is using stolen credentials, Captain!"

"If you lift off this runway, you are participating in the unauthorized flight of a capital murder suspect!"

"Federal agents and State Police are on your port wing right now!"

Inside the Gulfstream's cockpit, the pilot’s voice stuttered with sudden, overwhelming shock.

"Stand by... what did you say?"

Inside the private jet's cabin, Julian realized what was happening.

Through the oval passenger window, he saw the twin pursuit vehicles pacing the aircraft on the wet grass bordering the tarmac.

He saw Claire’s face pressed against the glass of the FBI SUV.

Julian rose from the plush leather recliner, his face twisted into an expression of unhinged, feral desperation.

He lunged toward the reinforced cockpit door, slamming his fists against the locked security panel.

"Keep this plane moving!" Julian bellowed, his voice carrying through the pilot's open microphone and booming out of Cross’s console speaker.

"Take off right now, or I swear to God you will never see your family again!"

"He's at the cockpit door!" the pilot shouted over the frequency.

"Co-pilot, pull the thrust reversers!"

"Abort takeoff! Abort takeoff!"

The high-pitched whine of the turbines altered instantly, dropping into a deep, vibrating rumble as the Gulfstream's thrust reversers deployed.

Massive sheets of spray and vapor erupted from the sides of the engine cowlings.

The heavy white aircraft shuddered violently as the carbon-ceramic brakes locked against the main landing gear.

The tires shrieked in protest, leaving wide, smoking black streaks across the rain-slicked runway paint.

The jet skidded sideways by twenty degrees, its port wing dipping dangerously close to the asphalt before the pilot regained steering authority.

The aircraft ground to a complete halt three hundred yards short of the southern perimeter fence.

Trooper Reynolds whipped his marked cruiser across the nose of the plane, blocking the taxi turn completely.

Agent Cross swung the FBI SUV alongside the main passenger air-stair door on the port side, cutting off any manual exit.

Reynolds kicked his door open, stepped out into the howling storm, and leveled his patrol rifle directly at the cockpit windscreen.

"Crew, cut all engines and engage the emergency parking brake!" Reynolds commanded through his cruiser’s external public address loudspeaker.

The jet engines wound down with a dying, mechanical whistle, leaving the runway in sudden, eerie quiet, broken only by the steady drum of rain.

Agent Cross stepped out into the freezing air, her Glock drawn and held at the low-ready position.

"Stay in the car," Cross ordered Claire and Anna.

Claire opened her door anyway.

She stepped onto the tarmac, her bandaged feet soaking up the jet-fuel-scented rainwater.

Anna stepped out behind her, holding Michael's heavy black marble urn tightly against her chest like an armor plate.

The hydraulic hiss of the aircraft's forward cabin door released.

The exterior latch slowly turned.

The air-stair folded outward and downward, settling onto the wet runway with a metallic clatter.

A figure appeared at the top of the steps, illuminated by the blinding floodlights of the police cruisers.

Julian Morgan.

His clothes were stained with mud, soot, and engine oil.

His hair was plastered to his forehead by sweat and rain.

In his right hand, he was not holding a firearm.

He was holding Michael's leather executive briefcase—the case that contained the bearer bonds, the forged international trusts, and the physical passports.

He looked down the steps at the circle of weapons pointed at his chest.

Then his dark eyes drifted past the uniformed officers.

Past Agent Cross.

He locked his gaze onto Claire and Anna standing together in the rain.

A terrible, mocking smile spread across his lips.

"You really thought you could bury me, didn't you, Claire?" Julian called down, his voice echoing across the silent tarmac.

"You think you’re walking away from this as the grieving, noble widow?"

May you like

"You have no idea what Michael left behind for you."

"You have no idea what kind of grave you’re digging for yourself."
