Chapter 13 - The Fractured Reflection

Julian took one slow, deliberate step down the wet metal air-stairs.
"Hands where I can see them, Morgan!" Agent Cross commanded, stepping forward with her service weapon leveled directly at his chest.
"Drop the briefcase on the platform, interlace your fingers behind your head, and get down on your knees!"
Julian didn't drop the case.
He gripped the leather handle tighter, his knuckles turning bloodless.
"Shoot me, Agent Cross," Julian mocked, his voice calm, rational, and terrifyingly cold.
"Pull the trigger on Runway Three-Three in front of forty airport surveillance cameras."
"Kill the man who holds the primary legal title to seventy million dollars in New England real estate."
"You don't have a suspect; you have Michael Morgan standing on his own private charter steps."
"You are not Michael," Claire said, stepping past Agent Cross’s shoulder onto the open tarmac.
Trooper Reynolds reached out an arm to push her back, but Claire brushed his hand aside.
She stood twelve feet from the bottom of the air-stairs, her eyes burning through the rain into the face that had occupied her home for seven years.
Up close, beneath the harsh, unforgiving glare of the police floodlights, the illusion began to disintegrate.
The physical symmetry was almost identical.
The jawline, the Roman nose, the broad forehead.
Even the tiny, faded childhood scar along the left side of his chin.
But the spirit behind the flesh was rotten to the core.
Michael’s eyes had held warmth, a subtle shyness, and a deep, anxious gentleness that had often frustrated Claire during their arguments.
Julian’s eyes were cold, calculating, and predatory.
They were the eyes of a man who looked at human beings and saw only leverage, transactions, and vulnerabilities.
"Look at yourself, Julian," Claire said, her voice cutting through the wind with devastating clarity.
"You spent your whole life rotting in foster homes and state penitentiaries, dreaming about the life Michael had."
"You thought that if you put on his tailored shirts, drove his German cars, and kissed his wives, you would become him."
Julian's smile twitched, a hairline crack appearing in his arrogant facade.
"I didn't steal his life, Claire," Julian spat, taking another step down the stairs.
"His life belonged to me by right of birth!"
"I was born fourteen minutes after him!"
"Our father looked at two infant boys and chose Michael because Michael didn't cry when the doctors pricked his heel!"
"He kept Michael to carry on the Morgan family dynasty and threw me into the state foster system like an unwanted stray!"
"I lived in cold group homes while Michael spent summers in Martha's Vineyard!"
"I ate government surplus food while Michael studied corporate finance at Harvard!"
"Everything he built, everything he touched, was bought with the inheritance that was half mine!"
Anna stepped up beside Claire, raising the black marble urn with both hands until it was level with Julian's chest.
"Michael never knew you existed until you showed up to destroy him, Julian!" Anna shouted, her voice breaking with raw, unadulterated grief.
"Michael would have shared everything with you if you had come to him as a brother!"
"He tried to help you!"
"He gave you millions of dollars when you threatened him!"
Julian let out a bitter, barking laugh that was swallowed by the storm.
"He gave me scraps!"
"He gave me crumbs to keep his precious little secret quiet!"
"He was a coward who couldn't choose between two women, so he hid behind two legal identities and lied every day of his life!"
"When his heart started failing, he didn't call an ambulance."
"He called me to beg me to take over his foreign corporations so you two wouldn't discover each other in probate court!"
Claire stepped another pace forward, her bare, bandaged feet splashing into the shallow water on the asphalt.
"You poisoned him, Julian."
Julian stopped on the third step from the bottom, his eyes narrowing to slits.
"He died of a congenital heart condition," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, defensive growl.
"My father’s clinic had the original pathology reports," Anna said, her gaze unblinking.
"Before you burned the building down and murdered my father, we took the cardiac blood samples."
"The State Police forensic laboratory in Meriden is running the toxicology analysis right now."
"They found the synthetic digitalis compound, Julian."
"The custom ester from your private pharmaceutical contacts."
"It’s over."
"There is no identity to steal."
"There is no fortune to collect."
"There is only an indictment for two counts of premeditated capital murder."
The words hung in the freezing air like a death sentence.
Julian's face went completely slack.
The arrogance, the intellectual superiority, the calculated sociopathy drained from his features, leaving only the hollow, terrified soul of a cornered criminal.
He looked at Claire.
He looked at Anna.
He looked at the black marble container holding the remains of the brother he had murdered.
"No," Julian whispered, shaking his head.
"No... I didn't spend three years planning this to rot in a cell."
Suddenly, Julian's left hand darted inside the interior lining of his soaked jacket.
"Drop it!" Trooper Reynolds roared, raising his rifle.
"Gun!" Agent Cross shouted, bringing her weapon up into firing alignment.
Julian did not pull a firearm.
He pulled a small, heavy glass ampoule filled with a clear, amber liquid—the remainder of the concentrated digitalis compound he had used to stop Michael's heart.
He raised the glass tube to his mouth, his thumb snapping the thin glass neck against the metal railing of the air-stairs.
He was going to swallow the poison right in front of them.
May you like
He was going to deny them the satisfaction of a trial, a conviction, and the truth.
"Julian, don't!" Claire screamed, lunging forward without thinking.
