Chapter 5 - The Deposition

The panic within the Prescott family was palpable.
With Brandon now terrified of a federal financial investigation, the family fractured. Margaret realized she was losing control, which only made her more vicious.
She demanded to sit for a deposition, believing she could charm and intimidate Sarah, our lawyer, into backing down.
Margaret arrived in a Chanel suit, her posture rigid, her lawyer looking nervous beside her.
“Mrs. Prescott,” Sarah began, the camera recording every frame. “On the night of August 11th, did you order your son Brandon to lock the door to the guest house?”
“No,” Margaret lied smoothly. “I suggested Emily rest in the guest house because she was hysterical. I have no idea how the door got locked.”
Sarah pulled out a transcript. “So, the voice on this recording saying, 'Lock the door, Brandon, we aren't done here,' is not yours?”
“As my experts will testify, audio can be manipulated,” Margaret said, smiling thinly.
“I see,” Sarah said. She reached into her briefcase and pulled out a stack of papers. “Let’s talk about Maria Gonzalez.”
Margaret’s thin smile vanished completely.
“Who is Maria Gonzalez?” Margaret's lawyer asked, clearly out of the loop.
“Maria was a housekeeper for the Prescotts five years ago,” Sarah explained to the room. “According to this sworn affidavit, she witnessed Ethan Prescott violently attack his previous girlfriend. And according to these bank records, Margaret Prescott paid Maria two hundred thousand dollars to sign an NDA and return to Mexico.”
The room went dead silent.
“Where did you get that?” Margaret whispered, her mask of superiority finally shattering.
“The truth is like water, Margaret,” I said from the back of the room. “It always finds a crack to leak through.”
In reality, when the news of Emily's case hit the papers, Maria had seen it. She reached out to my military email, refusing to let another girl suffer what she had seen.
“My client will not answer any further questions,” Margaret’s lawyer stammered, frantically packing his briefcase.
“She doesn't have to,” Sarah said cheerfully. “The prosecutor just filed a superseding indictment. They are adding witness tampering and conspiracy charges. And not just for Ethan.”

Margaret looked at me, pure hatred in her eyes. But beneath the hatred, I finally saw it.
Fear.
