Chapter 7 - The Aftermath

It took time for the dust to settle.

The divorce was finalized quickly. With Ethan in prison and the family assets tied up in federal litigation, they had no resources left to fight. Emily walked away with exactly what she wanted: her freedom.

I didn't seek revenge beyond the law. The military had taught me that once the enemy surrenders, you stop firing. The Prescotts had destroyed themselves.

We moved Emily's things out of the Charlotte estate while the FBI was literally carrying boxes of financial records out the front door.

Margaret stood on the lawn, watching her empire get boxed up. She didn't say a word to us as we drove past. She was a ghost haunting her own life.

Over the next six months, the healing began.

Emily started therapy. The nightmares, which used to wake her up screaming in the middle of the night, slowly faded. The flinching stopped.

She took a job teaching art at a local community center near Fort Liberty. She found joy in the messy, imperfect beauty of painting, a stark contrast to the sterile, rigid perfection the Prescotts had demanded of her.

I watched her one afternoon through the window of her classroom. She was laughing. It was a real laugh, from her chest, as a little boy accidentally painted his own nose blue.

I felt a weight lift off my shoulders—a weight I hadn't realized I was carrying since that night in the hospital.

My phone buzzed. It was Sarah, our lawyer.

“Just checking in, Colonel,” Sarah said. “Wanted to let you know the civil asset forfeiture went through on the Prescott estate. The government seized the guest house where they kept Emily.”

“What are they doing with it?” I asked.

“Auctioning it off to pay restitution to the victims of their wire fraud.”

I smiled. “Poetic.”

“How is she?” Sarah asked softly.

“She’s painting,” I said, watching my daughter wipe the paint off the boy’s nose. “She’s going to be just fine.”
