Chapter 3 - The Viral Aftermath

I couldn't breathe. The tears flowed freely down my face, ruining my cheap mascara, but I didn't care. I pushed through the aisle, running toward the stage as the principal, wiping his own eyes with a handkerchief, handed Liam his diploma. Liam practically leaped off the stage, his red skirts flying, and wrapped me in the tightest hug of his life. "I love you, Mom," he whispered into my hair over the roar of the applause. "I did it for you." We clung to each other, surrounded by the very people who had been mocking him just minutes before. Several of the students who had shouted the loudest came up to us, their faces flushed with shame, stammering out sincere apologies. It was a blur of emotion, flashes from cameras, and the overwhelming feeling of a weight I didn't know I was carrying finally being lifted.
When we finally got home to our small apartment, we collapsed on the couch, exhausted but radiantly happy. We ordered a large pepperoni pizza to celebrate. We thought the graduation was the end of it, a beautiful memory just for us and our local community. We were wrong. Unbeknownst to us, a parent in the front row had recorded the entire incident—from the initial cruel laughter to Liam’s speech and the standing ovation. They had posted it online with the caption: “They laughed at him for wearing a dress. You won’t believe why he did it.”

By the time I woke up the next morning to make coffee, my phone was buzzing so violently it almost rattled off the kitchen counter. Liam emerged from his room, rubbing his eyes, holding up his own phone. "Mom... are you seeing this?" The video had exploded. It had five million views on TikTok, another three million on Facebook. It was everywhere. People were leaving tens of thousands of comments, sharing their own stories of single mothers, of sacrifices, of bullying, and of redemption.
Major news outlets were sliding into our direct messages. Talk show producers were sending emails. The world was captivated by the boy in the red dress and the mother who sacrificed everything. Liam’s craftsmanship was being praised by actual fashion designers in the comments, pointing out the complex hemming and the elegant drape of the fabric he had taught himself to sew. For a brief, shining moment, it felt like a fairytale. We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from strangers across the globe. But I knew, deep in the pit of my stomach, that with millions of eyes on us, the shadows of our past were bound to be illuminated.
