Chapter 2 - The Master of the House

He wore a tailored black tuxedo that looked like armor. He was thirty-four years old, built like a prizefighter, and possessed a gaze so sharp it could cut glass. Julian Mercer did not just inherit his family’s multibillion-dollar empire; he had ruthlessly expanded it, burning down archaic traditions and rebuilding them in his own image.

He was a man who rarely attended social events, even his own. When he did, it was usually to end someone’s career.

The crowd parted for him instantly. Senators stepped back. Bankers lowered their heads. Vanessa’s mocking smile vanished, replaced by a desperate, breathless mask of charm. She immediately straightened her posture, smoothing her silver gown, preparing to greet the most powerful man in Chicago.

“Mr. Mercer,” Vanessa said, her voice dropping an octave, honey-sweet and trembling slightly. “We weren’t expecting you until dinner. We have a slight situation here, but—”

Julian did not look at her. He did not look at Megan, or Tiffany, or the horrified hotel manager rushing across the lobby. His dark eyes were locked entirely on Claire.

He saw the wet hem of her navy dress. He saw the torn strap of her purse on the floor. He saw the faint red scrape on her delicate wrist.

A muscle in his jaw feathered. It was the only outward sign of a rage that threatened to burn the hotel to its foundations.

He walked straight past Vanessa, completely ignoring her outstretched hand. He stopped in front of Claire. The silence in the room was so profound that the clinking of ice in a discarded glass sounded like a gunshot.

Julian reached out. His large, warm hands gently took Claire’s injured wrist. He inspected the scrape with a tenderness that defied his terrifying reputation.

“Are you hurt?” he asked. His voice was a low rumble, meant only for her, yet it carried through the breathless room.

“Just a scrape,” Claire said quietly.

Julian lifted his eyes, meeting hers. The silent communication between them spoke volumes. Did they touch you? his eyes asked. Let them dig their own graves, her eyes answered.

Julian let out a slow, controlled breath. He turned, pulling Claire gently to his side, positioning his large frame between her and the rest of the room. He finally looked at Vanessa.

The air in the ballroom seemed to drop twenty degrees. Vanessa took a step back, her confidence shattering under his icy stare.

“Mr. Mercer,” she stammered. “This woman… she trespassed. She was harassing the guests. I was just trying to protect the foundation’s event.”

Julian’s voice cut through the air like a whip. “That is my wife.”

The words fell upon the crowd like heavy stones. A collective gasp echoed near the chandeliers. Megan Price dropped her champagne flute. It shattered on the marble, splashing her diamond-encrusted shoes, but she didn’t even flinch. Tiffany Cole’s phone slipped from her fingers. Vanessa’s face drained of all color, turning a sickly, ghostly white.

“Your… wife?” Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking. “But… you’re not married. The press… the foundation… no one said—”

“I do not ask the press for permission to marry,” Julian said coldly. “Nor do I ask the leeches who drain my foundation.”

He raised his hand, signaling the men who had entered with him. Four more men in dark suits stepped into the lobby.

“Lock the doors,” Julian ordered. The command was absolute. “Nobody leaves. Nobody makes a phone call. The event is suspended.”

The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut. The loud click of the locks turning sent a wave of panic through the elite crowd. Billionaires and politicians suddenly looked like trapped animals.

Julian turned his attention to the fake security guard, D. Hollis, who was currently trying to slide toward a side exit. “Grab him,” Julian told his head of security. Within seconds, Hollis was pinned against the wall.

Julian looked back at Vanessa, who was now trembling visibly. He noticed the cream-colored envelope in her hand. The one with the black wax seal. The oak tree. The crest of the Mercer family’s private investigators.

Julian’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “I believe,” Julian said softly, “you are holding something that belongs to my wife.”
