Chapter 5 - The Morning After

The fallout was catastrophic and beautiful. At 7:00 AM, the stock of Richard Lockwood’s holding company plummeted by forty percent. By 9:00 AM, the board of the Mercer Foundation had formally expelled the arrested members. By noon, the name Claire Mercer was trending globally.
Claire sat at the massive oak dining table in the sunroom of their estate, sipping her morning tea. She was wearing one of Julian’s oversized white dress shirts, her hair tied in a messy bun. Spread across the table were four different tablets and a stack of newspapers.
The headlines were ruthless. “THE BILLIONAIRE’S SECRET WEAPON: HOW CLAIRE MERCER CLEANED HOUSE.” “LOCKWOOD EMPIRE CRUMBLES AT FOUNDATION GALA.” “FROM PLAIN JANE TO PREDATOR: THE NEW QUEEN OF CHICAGO.”
Julian walked into the sunroom, fresh from a shower, wearing dark slacks and a fitted gray sweater. He poured himself a cup of black coffee and leaned over Claire’s chair, kissing her cheek. “You’re enjoying this,” he murmured, glancing at the headlines.
“I’m enjoying the efficiency of the justice system when billionaires provide the evidence,” Claire corrected.
Julian chuckled, taking a seat beside her. Just then, the heavy double doors of the sunroom swung open. William, their elderly butler, stood there looking distinctly uncomfortable.
“Sir,” William said cautiously. “Your mother is here. And she is… highly agitated.”
Before Julian could respond, Eleanor Mercer swept into the room. She was sixty years old, dripping in pearls, and carried an aura of absolute aristocratic authority. She held a rolled-up newspaper like a weapon.
“Julian Edward Mercer!” Eleanor shrieked.
Julian calmly took a sip of his coffee. “Good morning, Mother. Care for some tea?”
Eleanor slammed the newspaper onto the oak table. “Do not offer me tea! What is this? A secret marriage? To an auditor? You humiliated the Lockwoods in public? Richard’s wife has been calling me all morning, crying hysterically!”
“Tell her to hire a good lawyer,” Julian said coldly. “Her husband stole from sick children, Mother. If you want to defend him, do it outside my house.”
Eleanor flinched, but quickly redirected her fury toward Claire. She looked Claire up and down, taking in the oversized shirt and messy bun.
“And you,” Eleanor sneered. “You think you’ve won the lottery, don’t you? Some little nobody who managed to trap my son. The press says you wore a cheap rag to the gala. You are dragging the Mercer name through the mud.”
Claire did not shrink back. She did not apologize. She calmly set down her teacup.
“Mrs. Mercer,” Claire said, her voice perfectly even. “The Mercer name was already in the mud. It was being dragged through the dirt by your friends, who were using your family’s foundation as a personal piggy bank.”
Eleanor bristled. “How dare you speak to me—”
“I dare because I fixed it,” Claire interrupted, her tone sharpening just enough to cut through the older woman’s bluster. “I audited the accounts. I found the leaks. I protected your son’s legacy while you were busy having lunch with the people stealing from him.”
Eleanor was struck speechless. She looked at Julian, expecting him to reprimand his wife for such insolence.
Instead, Julian was looking at Claire with unabashed admiration. “She’s right, Mother,” Julian said. “Claire saved this family from a federal scandal. You should be thanking her.”
Eleanor’s mouth opened and closed like a fish. She realized, in that moment, that the power dynamic in her family had fundamentally shifted. Julian was no longer just the heir; he was the absolute ruler. And Claire was not a fragile girl to be bullied. She was an iron wall.
“I will not be spoken to this way,” Eleanor huffed, gathering her dignity. “I am leaving.”
“William will show you out,” Julian said flatly.
As the doors closed behind his mother, Julian let out a long breath. He looked at Claire. “You handled her perfectly.”
“She’s frightened,” Claire noted, her analytical mind working. “She values order and reputation. We disrupted both. Give her a few months. When the foundation’s profits soar and the press praises our transparency, she will claim it was all her idea to welcome me into the family.”
May you like
Julian burst out laughing. He reached over, pulling Claire onto his lap. “You,” he said, burying his face in her neck, “are absolutely terrifying.”
“You knew that when you married me,” she whispered, wrapping her arms around him. “And I thank God for it every day.”
