Chapter 4 - The Smug Courtroom and the Ambush

At nine o'clock the following morning, the Charlotte Municipal Courthouse was bathed in bright sunlight.
Evelyn Vance arrived in a convoy of three black Mercedes Maybachs.
She wore a bespoke pearl-gray Chanel suit, diamond earrings, and dark sunglasses.
Flanking her were Julian and Marcus, both laughing casually as their senior defense counsel, Arthur Pendelton, whispered jokes in the courthouse lobby.
Arthur Pendelton was a legendary defense lawyer who charged fifteen hundred dollars an hour and bragged about never losing a case for high-society clients.
They had filed an emergency ex-parte motion for an injunction, demanding Maya Vance’s immediate return to the family estate and a comprehensive gag order on all accusations.
As I walked through the courthouse security checkpoint in my pristine Class-A green service uniform, Marcus Vance leaned over the metal railing and sneered.
"Look who showed up. The soldier brought her dress ribbons to court."
"Did you bring your daughter's apology letter, Colonel?" Julian mocked, adjusting his silk tie. "Or did you realize that in this courtroom, money writes the law?"
I walked past them without acknowledging their presence by a fraction of a millimeter.
Inside Courtroom 302, Judge Robert Campbell sat behind the elevated oak bench.
Judge Campbell had received two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in campaign contributions from the Vance Political Action Committee over the last five years.
"Court is in session," the bailiff announced.
Judge Campbell adjusted his spectacles and glanced down at Pendelton.
"Mr. Pendelton, I have reviewed your emergency petition regarding the custody and medical management of Mrs. Maya Vance. Where is the respondent?"
"Your Honor," Pendelton stood up smoothly, buttoning his jacket. "The respondent's mother, Colonel Sarah Sterling, has unlawfully removed my client's lawful wife from a private hospital and concealed her location."
"Mrs. Maya Vance suffers from severe psychological disturbances."
"We ask this court to issue an immediate bench warrant compelling Colonel Sterling to disclose Mrs. Vance's whereabouts and surrender all medical records to the family’s private physicians."
Judge Campbell nodded sympathetically, turning his gaze toward me.
"Colonel Sterling, do you have civilian legal representation present?"
"I do not require civilian counsel, Your Honor," I said, standing tall behind the defense table.
Julian and Marcus let out audible chuckles from the gallery.
Evelyn smiled with cold triumph.
"Colonel Sterling," Judge Campbell said sternly, tapping his gavel. "This is a court of law, not a military drill field. If you fail to produce your daughter within two hours, I will hold you in direct contempt of court and remand you to county custody."
"You will not be doing that, Judge Campbell," I replied calmly.
The courtroom suddenly went dead silent.
"Excuse me?" Judge Campbell's face turned crimson. "Are you threatening this court?"
"I am informing this court," I stated clearly. "Under Title 10 of the United States Code, Maya Vance is currently undergoing critical trauma care at a restricted military installation under direct Department of Defense protection."
"Furthermore, this local court no longer has jurisdiction over this matter."
Pendelton laughed out loud. "That is absurd, Your Honor! This is a domestic dispute between North Carolina residents!"
At that exact second, the heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open with a resounding bang.
Six federal agents wearing dark suits and gold Department of Justice badges walked down the center aisle.
Leading them was Special Agent in Charge David Vance—no relation to the defendants, but the lead investigator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Task Force.
Beside him walked two armed United States Marshals carrying a thick stack of red-sealed federal warrants.
Judge Campbell froze, his gavel hovering in mid-air.
"What is the meaning of this disruption?" Judge Campbell stammered.
Agent Vance walked directly to the front bar, pulled a certified document from his coat, and slapped it onto the bench in front of the judge.
"United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina, Judge Campbell," Agent Vance announced in a voice that echoed off the high ceiling.
"By order of Federal Magistrate Laura Bennett, all local proceedings regarding Maya Vance are hereby stayed and transferred to federal jurisdiction under 18 U.S. Code § 1512—Tampering with a Witness, Victim, or an Informant."
Julian's smirk vanished.
Marcus stood up so fast his chair screeched against the floor.
Evelyn Vance’s face drained of every ounce of color.
"This is an outrage!" Pendelton yelled, waving his hands. "On what grounds?"
Agent Vance turned slowly, looked directly at Julian Vance, and pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
May you like
"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for federal witness tampering, bank fraud, wire fraud, and interstate domestic violence resulting in catastrophic bodily injury."
"You have the right to remain silent."
