Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

The courtroom erupted into total chaos.

Reporters who had been tipped off by my intelligence staff flooded the gallery doors, cameras flashing in a blinding blizzard of white light.

"Get your hands off my son!" Evelyn Vance shrieked, breaking her lifelong composure and lunging toward the federal agents. "Do you know who we are? Call Senator Davis immediately!"

"Evelyn Vance," Agent Vance said calmly, stepping around her. "You might want to save your phone calls for your own defense team."

Two female FBI agents stepped behind Evelyn, their hands resting on their sidearms.

"Evelyn Vance, you are under federal indictment for five counts of public corruption, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud."

"Marcus Vance, step forward with your hands behind your back," another agent barked, pinning Marcus against the polished wooden rail.

Marcus struggled, his expensive watch catching the sunlight as steel ratchets snapped tight around his wrists.

"Julian! Mom! Do something!" Marcus screamed, his voice cracking like a terrified child's.

Julian Vance was forced down onto his knees on the courtroom carpet.

The designer suit he wore was crumpled under the weight of two federal marshals.

His face was pressed flat against the wood, his eyes wide with disbelieving shock.

He looked up at me as I stood three feet away, perfectly motionless.

"Sarah... please!" Julian gasped, his voice trembling violently. "This is a misunderstanding! I love Maya! We can settle this privately! I'll give her whatever she wants—the company shares, the house, millions of dollars!"

I looked down at him with cold detachment.

"When you dragged my daughter across your marble floor," I said softly, "did you listen when she begged you to stop?"

"When you broke her ribs and locked her in the dark," I continued, "did you think about private settlements?"

"You told me last night that my rank didn't intimidate you."

"You were right, Julian."

"My rank was never meant to scare you."

"It was meant to protect this country from predators."

"And today, the law has finally come for you."

As the federal marshals hauled Julian to his feet and marched him down the center aisle, hundreds of camera shutters clicked in rapid succession.

Outside the courthouse, three dozen news vans lined the street.

The banner headlines were already flashing across national cable networks:

BILLIONAIRE VANCE DYNASTY COLLAPSES UNDER FEDERAL CORRUPTION AND DOMESTIC TERROR CHARGES.

Judge Campbell sat behind the bench, trembling as he stared at the federal seizure warrants.

I walked over to the defense table, picked up my service cap, and placed it squarely on my head.

I turned my back on the screaming Vance family and walked out into the morning air.

The first phase of the operation was complete.

The second phase—the total dismantling of their hidden network—was just getting started.
