Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Coup and Eleanor's Betrayal

By mid-morning, while Ariana was resting comfortably under heavy sedation on the tenth floor of Lake Michigan Memorial Hospital, I returned to Vale House to grab a change of clothes and face the inevitable corporate storm brewing in my absence.

The moment I walked through the grand double doors, Miles intercepted me in the foyer, his face pale and tight with stress.

"Sir, you need to go directly to the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor immediately," Miles said, falling into step beside me as I strode toward the private elevators.

"What happened? Did the Harrington group pull their funding?" I asked, loosening my tie as the elevator doors slid shut.

"Worse than that, sir... your mother called an emergency quorum of the board of directors at 8:00 AM using her proxy voting rights as the primary shareholder of the founding estate," Miles reported grimly.

"My mother invoked a board coup?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

"She presented the board with the emergency news reports about the cancelled wedding, the public scandal with the Harrington family, and a formal motion to invoke Clause 9 of the corporate charter declaring you mentally unfit to manage the conglomerate due to 'severe personal instability,'" Miles said, tapping his tablet to show me the live meeting feed.

The elevator bell chimed softly, and the doors opened directly into the mahogany-paneled boardroom where twelve of the most powerful executives in Chicago sat in dead silence around the long glass table. Eleanor Vale sat at the head of the table in my customary leather chair, her expression carved out of absolute ice.

"Welcome to your final meeting as CEO, Adrian," Eleanor said calmly as I walked down the center aisle and placed both hands on the edge of the glass table.

"You called an illegal board coup while my wife is fighting for her life in a hospital bed, Mother?" I asked, my voice echoing off the wood paneling.

"I am simply protecting the legacy your grandfather built with his bare hands before you decided to sacrifice four generations of strategic alliances for a penniless nobody and an unverified infant," Eleanor announced to the room.

Robert Harrington sat near the far end of the table, smiling like a cat that had finally caught the canary.

"The board has already voted nine to three in favor of temporarily stripping you of your executive signing privileges and naming a transitional committee led by myself and your mother," Robert said smugly.

I looked around the table at men and women I had made millions for over the last decade, watching them all suddenly find the wood grain of the table fascinating.

"You think a piece of corporate paper and a rigged board vote can take my company away from me while my daughter is breathing filtered air three miles from here?" I asked, a cold, dangerous smile spreading across my face.

"Clause 9 is ironclad, Adrian, and without the Harrington capital injection by the end of business today, your shipping fleets will be seized by federal maritime liens before midnight," Eleanor said coldly.

"You forgot one minor detail, Mother," I said, reaching into my breast pocket and pulling out a folded legal document.

"What ridiculous bluff are you playing now?" she snapped, her composure slipping for a microsecond.

"Ten minutes before I walked into this building, I signed a binding equity transfer assigning fifty-one percent of my personal voting shares to a trust exclusively managed by my wife, Ariana Vale, and her legal guardian," I stated clearly.

The color drained entirely from Eleanor's face as Robert Harrington half-stood from his chair in sheer panic.

"You can't transfer controlling shares to an outsider without board approval!" Robert yelled.

"She isn't an outsider, Robert... she is the majority shareholder of Vale Enterprises as of nine minutes ago, which means this meeting is adjourned permanently," I said, turning my back on them and walking out of the boardroom without looking back.
