Chapter 9 - The Final Confrontation at Vale House

Two days later, after Ariana and baby Elena were cleared by Dr. Vance to leave the hospital, our black sedan pulled through the iron gates of Vale House for the first time since the night everything fell apart.
Instead of driving around to the back staff entrance, I instructed the driver to stop directly at the front grand steps, where Eleanor Vale was standing on the porch with a face like thunder.
I stepped out first, walking around to open the passenger door and extending my hand to help Ariana step out into the crisp afternoon air, while Miles followed closely behind carrying the baby carrier.
Eleanor marched down the marble steps, her eyes fixed entirely on Ariana with undisguised disdain.
"You actually had the audacity to bring her back into this house after everything that has transpired?" Eleanor demanded, stopping just inches away from us.
"This is her house, Mother, just as much as it is mine, and as of three days ago, she holds the controlling interest in the family trust that pays for these marble steps you're standing on," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.
Eleanor turned her sharp gaze toward me, her voice trembling with righteous fury.
"You have destroyed the Vale family legacy out of some pathetic romantic delusion, Adrian, and your grandfather would turn over in his grave if he could see you bowing down to an orphan."
"My grandfather built this empire with a partner who stood by him when he had nothing, Mother, exactly like Ariana stood by me when I was just a mid-level manager trying to claw my way up," I retorted, stepping between her and my wife.
"I will not live under the same roof as a woman who holds my financial future in the palm of her hand," Eleanor hissed, turning sharply toward the front door.
"Then I suggest you pack your silk dresses and move into one of the downtown penthouse properties before the legal team changes the estate locks this evening," I stated flatly.
Eleanor froze, turning her head back over her shoulder with a look of pure, unadulterated shock, realizing for the first time in her life that her authority had been permanently revoked.
"You are making a grave mistake, Adrian," she whispered before turning and storming into the mansion, the heavy oak doors slamming shut behind her with a definitive, echoing thud.
Ariana let out a long breath she seemed to have been holding since we arrived, looking up at me with a soft, genuine smile.

"Was that really necessary?" she asked quietly.
"It was overdue by about five years," I replied, wrapping my arm securely around her waist as Miles carried our sleeping daughter up the grand steps toward our real future.
